WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the DEP S7 Kawasaki KX250F exhaust system.

(1) Improvements. DEP’s designers made across-the-board improvements to the previous DEP KX250F exhaust system. They developed a larger canister with 32 percent more volume to reduce sound. They beefed up and widened the hanger bracket to increase strength and stability. There is now a three-piece, sprung mounting system that allows for easy fitting and more flex in the system. They also upgraded the look with a stainless gunmetal end cap with a tumbled finish.

(2) Fit. The DEP pipe slipped right into place. It was a great fit, and everything lined up to spec. We know that manly men don’t like reading directions, but in this case, it’s a good idea. Not that the installation is difficult, but there are two spacers—one for the front and one for the rear pipe brackets—that can go on a few different ways. Only one way is correct. Also, the body bracket will take a few minutes to line up with the rear exhaust bolt, but once it’s in place, the fit is solid. We personally like the free-floating body bracket because there is more room for adjustments if needed.

(3) Performance. We tested the DEP KX250F exhaust on a bone-stock KX250F, and it definitely changed the powerband more to the MXA wrecking crew’s liking. The OEM pipe produces a good midrange hit but lacks low-end power, especially when coming out of corners. With the stock pipe, we occasionally had to rely on the clutch to get the rpm up to transition into the midrange quickly. The DEP pipe gave the KX250F more low-end power, which allowed test riders to roll on the throttle without having to abuse the clutch. The DEP pipe did take away some of the midrange hit of the stocker, but it made for a very smooth powerband all the way through the range.

(4) Weight. The DEP exhaust weighs 6.6 pounds—a full 2 pounds lighter than the stock KX250F exhaust.

(5) Insert. The S7 silencer comes with an optional “Q” insert. This insert lowers decibels and qualifies as a spark arrestor.

WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? This stainless/aluminum exhaust system is priced in the titanium price range.

3-STARS

It offers good fit and good performance, but it’s a little pricey because of its European heritage.
