MXA TEAM TESTED: FLY RACING KINETIC MESH GEAR

WHAT IS IT? Fly Racing’s Kinetic Mesh gear is made to keep you cool and relatively clean on the track. It uses a dual-mesh construction to let air pass through the outer material of the gear while still keeping dirt out. The Fly Racing Kinetic Mesh gear can be seen on Pro riders like Zach Osborne, Joey Savatgy, Justin Bogle and R.J. Hampshire.

WHAT’S IT COST? $38.95 (jersey), $119.95 (pants).

WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the Fly Racing Kinetic Mesh gear.

(1) Jersey. The Fly Racing Kinetic Mesh jersey is made of 100-percent polyester mesh material to offer exceptional breathability‚ so much so that it is actually see-through. The jersey’s multi-panel construction creates a standard fit. It’s not tight like the athletic-fitting Fly Lite gear, but it is not too baggy, either. The jersey has a tag-less collar, and its tail extends 1-1/2 inches to help it stay tucked into your pants.

(2) Pants. The Fly Racing Kinetic Mesh pant uses multi-directional stretch rip-stop panels down the side of the legs and at the knees to increase flexibility. The chassis is built with ultra-durable panels of 900-denier material to increase strength. There are two soft-flex rubber badges on each knee that move naturally with your legs and have large vents for airflow. The leather heat-shield panels on the inner knees have DuPont Kevlar stitching to prevent tearing. The pants also have pre-shaped knees and a full-floating seat surrounded by rip-stop material that moves with your body. The ratcheting closure has a zipper-lock system to keep pants secure, and the waistband also uses two Velcro sans-a-belt style side-cinching straps to create the perfect fit.

(3) Performance. The MXA test riders didn’t have any issues with the mobility of the Kinetic Mesh gear. We could lift our leg high without restriction whenever throwing it over a bike or navigating deep ruts. The ratchet-type front closure on the pants doesn’t help tighten the waistband, but the side-cinching Velcro straps do help customize the fit by allowing 2 inches of adjustability. Additionally, the Velcro zipper-lock strap keeps the zipper from falling down. Overall, the Kinetic Mesh pants have a secure fit that doesn’t slide down on gripper seats.

(4) Ventilation. The Fly Racing Kinetic Mesh jersey is serious about keeping you cool. It has great ventilation and is a blessing on a hot summer day. The Kinetic Mesh pants were less breathable when compared to the jersey, but they still were much better than the standard, non-mesh Kinetic pants.

(5) Durability. We put our toughest test riders in the Kinetic Mesh gear and, for the most part, it held up well. The leather knee panels are positioned perfectly to protect the pants against exhaust heat and wear and tear. The jersey held up better than most other vented jerseys. Our two complaints were with the pants. The multi-stretch knee panels developed holes after being roosted, and many of the pants’ seams began to fray after one ride and continued to get worse as time went on.

(6) Options. The Fly Racing Kinetic Mesh gear comes in five different colorways. The jersey is available in sizes small to double extra large, and the pants come in 28- to 40-inch waistbands.

WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? The fraying on the seams of the pants didn’t affect the structural integrity of the gear, but it did make our new gear look ragged after a few rides. Roost holes in the knee area at the multi-stretch fabric isn’t uncommon; however, it’s still unfortunate.

MXA RATING: The Fly Racing Kinetic Mesh gear isn’t a Pro-only vented line. It has a standard fit that complements riders of all shapes and is comfortable to wear. It is structurally durable and has great breathability for hot days at the track.
