2019 CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES: YOU DO THE MATH

Justin Brayton 2019 Oakland Supercross practice-6716Justin Brayton is 9th in 450 points, but he is 31 points behind Cooper Webb—which means that he is one full race behind in the 2019 points chase.

Winning an AMA Supercross pays 26 points, second gets 23 and third gets 21 and so one until 22nd place gets 1 points. Thus, if a rider who has hopes of being the 2019 AMA Supercross Championships falls more than 26 point behind the leader, he is one full Supercross race behind the leader. You might be surprised to learn that after only 4 of 17 AMA 450 Supercross events there are only seven riders still racing on the same event—everyone else is more that 26 points behind the leader. Obviously, injured riders like Jason Anderson (37 points back) and Malcolm Stewart (66 points behind) are out of contention, but the list of riders more than one race back includes Cole Seely, Justin Brayton, Aaron Plessinger, Chad Reed, Justin Hill and Justin Bogle.

Cole Seely_2019 Anaheim 2 Supercross -4247Cole Seely is just one point out of being on the same race as the 450 points leader.

WHO HAS NOT FALLEN MORE THAN 26 POINTS BEHIND IN 450 POINTS

2. Ken Roczen …-2
3. Eli Tomac…-3
4. Marvin Musquin…-4
5. Justin Barcia…-11
6. Dean Wilson)…-14
7. Blake Baggett…-20
(Everyone else is more than 26 points back of points leader Cooper Webb. Cole Seely, in eighth place, is 27 points adrift.)

250 start 2019 Oakland Supercross races-7747Next week’s San Diego Superceoss is the halfway point for the 250 West series.

In the 250 West, there are five riders still racing on the same race. However, the 250 West series is only 10 races long, so there is less time to make up lost points.

Rj Hampshire_2019 Oakland Supercross qualifying -6917The man on the bubble, R.J. Hampshire has been near the front “almost” every week. But, a bad night in Oakland came close to pushing him back a full race.

STILL THE CHAMP! HE’S IN THE RECORD BOOK & HAS THE NUMBER ONE PLATE UNTIL MAY 4

For a sport that idolizes anyone who wins, regardless of  how they act, it is also a sport that casts off anyone who isn’t winning anymore. 2018 AMA 450 Supercross Champion Jason Anderson broke his arm in two places while practicing after Anaheim 2. But, he’s not forgotten. He is still the current Supercross Champion. We can’t wait for him to come back—hopefully for the AMA 450 Nationals.

GODSPEED! DAN HANEBRINK (1939-2018)

Dan Hanebrink loved anything that went fast from BMX bikes to mountain bikes to motocross bikes to electric bikes to road racers.

Dan Hanebrink was an inventor, bike designer, motocross racer and truly original guy. He had that uncanny knack of understanding how something worked at first glance and the skills to make it better. Sadly, Dan passed away at the age of 79 while still working on his next concept motorcycle.

Dan celebrated his 60th birthday at a mountain bike race in 1999. Dan won six mountain bike championships in his age groups, raced at the Bonneville Salt Flat and was an X Games regular. Photo by Vic Armijo

A list of Dan accomplishments would have to included the SE Shocker suspended mountain bike, his amphibious four-wheel drive van (that was on the cover of Popular Science), his founding of the Palm Springs Tramway downhill gravity bicycle race, his snow/sand fat-tired Extreme mountain bike and his spectacular crash in the downhill snow bicycle speed race at the Winter X Games. Dan raced his Honda CRF450 at the REM Glen Helen races for many years, along with his son Jared, before ailing health forced Dan to give up motocross.

BIKES YOU NEVER SEEN BEFORE: TRANSAMA 125 WINNING

Although Transama claims to have sold its bikes mostly in the USA, no one at MXA, past or present, remembers ever hearing of or seeing one. Did you own a Transama 125 Winning?

Manufactured in Pesaro, Italy, and powered by an Italian Hiro air-cooled engine, the Moto Transama was available in motocross and enduro versions.

The spelling of the name is often spelled differently. It has been known as Transama, Trans-Ama, Moto Trans-ama and Pesaro Transama. This Italian motorcycle brand lasted from 1977 until 1985. It made mopeds with Minarelli engines and trials, enduro and motocross bikes with 125 or 250cc Hiro engine.

MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK: A GRIP DONUT

MXA’S AD OF THE WEEK: DYNAMITE DENIMS

Dynamite Denims were heavy-duty jeans with sewn-in hip and knee pads and a competition stripe down each leg. They were cheap at $24.95, but not as cheap as the company that sold Dynamite  Denims. They wouldn’t even pop for an actual photograph of their racing pants, but instead relied on a drawing.

CLASSIC MXA TEST RIDER PHOTOS: “I RIDE WHAT THEY TELL ME TO RIDE”

MXA test riders don’t get to pick what they ride. If they complain about the bike they are assigned to test, then they are assigned something a lot worse the next day. We don’t know what Dennis Stapleton did, but we bet he won’t complain again.

MOTO-CHALLENGE ANSWER: If you guessed Jean-Michel Bayle you are wrong. Years before Bayle quit motocross to go road racing, Texan Steve Wise did it first. During his racing career Steve won an AMA 125 National, AMA 250 National, AMA Premier Supercross, AMA Superbike road race,  ABC-TV Superbikers race, podiumed at an AMA Grand National Dirt Track and was named 1982 AMA Athlete of the Year,
