• KEN ROCZEN WALKS AWAY FROM THE 2022 AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES

Ken looked tired and rundown by round six in Minneapolis.

It wasn’t the least bit surprising when Honda announced that Ken Roczen would take a break from the 2022 AMA Supercross series. Why not? Because Ken hasn’t been riding like Ken since the after first race of the season, where he won the Anaheim 1 Supercross. His results plummeted as the season progresses. In fact, a healthy Ken Roczen could finish better if he started from the parking lot than he has been since his inaugural win. Ken’s nine scores so far in 2022 have been 1-13-7-13-5-11-8-13-7. Thus, Ken won’t be at Detroit this Saturday night, or at Indy, Seattle, St. Louis, Atlanta, Foxborough, Denver or the finale at Salt Lake City.

Cooper Webb Ken Roczen Justin Barcia 450 podium 2022 Anaheim 1 Supercross-3465Ken celebrating what looked like the start of a great Supercross season at Anaheim 1.

Ken has hinted at the issues that have been bothering him since A1, but never full explained what he’s been going through (apart from not liking his bike). It turns out that Ken has been battling the lingering effects of the Epstein-Barr virus since his serious arm injuries in 2017 and ’18 (even sitting out the entire 2020 AMA 450 National series). His health situation was not helped by getting Covid-19 after round three in San Diego. After only making the top five in two of the 9 events so far, and scoring an unheard of 13th place three times, Roczen made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Supercross series and seek professional treatment from European medical experts. It is doubtful that he will be back for the 2022 AMA 450 Nationals.

• KTM JUNIOR SUPERCROSS PROGRAM JOINS WITH THE RYAN DUNGEY FOUNDATION TO RAISE $20,000 FOR “ALL KIDS BIKE”

Ryan Dungey has dedicated himself, through his foundation, to help make the world a better place.

KTM is pleased to announce that through a partnership between the Ryan Dungey Foundation and the KTM Junior Supercross program was able to raise over $20,000 for “All Kids Bike.” a nonprofit organization whose mission is to teach every child in America how to ride a bike in kindergarten PE class. KTM set out to raise $25,000 over the entire 17-round 2022 AMA Supercross Championship, but raided $20,000 in the first six rounds. “All Kids Bike,” a youth-focused program, will have the opportunity to continue fundraising throughout the season and the top earner will be treated to a “Day with Dungey” at the series finale in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 7.  As a founding partner of the Ryan Dungey Foundation, KTM is proud to support their former star rider in his initiative to create opportunities for the next generation of children by supporting a healthy and active lifestyle for kids.

THE APRIL 2022 ISSUE OF MXA IS OUT! THE BEST DEAL IN THE SPORT!

If you don’t subscribe to MXA, you are missing a whole different world of motocross news, facts, tests and photos. For example, the just released April 2022 issue has a shootout between a perfectly retro-modded 2000 Kawasaki KX500 against a 1994 Honda CR500s. We also go back in time to retro test the fabled 2010 Husaberg upside-down engine FX450. The Jens Elmwall-designed engine was a technical masterpiece—but it didn’t sell, was hard to work on and lots of Husaberg’s cutting edge innovations were too far ahead of the times. Did we mention that it weighed 260 pounds?

We also sat down with former AMA Pro and 250 West Supercross winner Casey Lytle to see what he’s been up to since his Honda of Troy, Yamaha of Troy, FMF Honda and Pro Circuit Kawasaki days. Casey now works at KTM where he has been the Factory Team Manager, Red Bull KTM team test rider, Race Team coordinator, West Coast Customer Service Manager and has since moved over to the KTM testing department where he oversees development on the new production bikes.

Inside the mag is a detailed analysis of the 20 Innermost secrets of the 2023 KTM 450SXF. There are things inside these bikes that you never dreamed of—we explain all of them. • THIS WEEK IN MXA WITH JOSH MOSIMAN:  RACING THE AMA NATIONAL GRAND PRIX CHAMPIONSHIP (NGPC)

• KYLE CHISHOLM’S FIRST NIGHT AS A STAR YAMAHA FILL-IN RIDER FOR THE 250 EAST

Kyle Chisholm fill-in for Jeremy Martin at Detroit.  The 34-year-old had some issues in the 250East main event, but ended the night in 12th.

After Jeremy Martin inured his shoulder and had to pull out of the 2022 AMA 250East series, Star Yamaha signed 34-year-old Kyle Chisholm as a fill-in rider for the remainder of the 2022 AMA Supercross 250 East series. Chisholm will make his Star Yamaha debut in Detroit on Saturday night..Chisholm has been racing the 450 Supercross series as a privateer and was 15th in 450 Supercross points with 57 points, but since ,at the time of the Star offer, he was 146 points behind 450 points leader Eli Tomac and 53 points out of the top ten he eagerly accepted the opportunity to race a factory-back YZ250F for Star Yamaha.

Jeremy Martin (left) was on hand to give Kyle (right) some 250 pointers.

How did Detroit go? Kyle qualified ninth fastest at 45.93 seconds, which was 2 seconds slower than fast qualifier Jett Lawrence (43.85 seconds). That was  a very good shoing for a rider who hasn’t race a 250 in a few years. In 250 heat race two Kyle finished fourth to secure the 8th pick at the gate for the Detroit 250 East main. Kyle got a decent start in the main and was running fifth at the end of the first lap, but a stalled this bike on lap 3. The stall was unfortunate because it happen so early in the main event that he lost six places in the stall of ten seconds. He had been relegated back to 11th before he could recover. He lost more positions and was lapped by Jett Lawrence on lap 15. However, Kyle was able to claw his way back to 12th overall at checkered flag. It was a good outing given the circumstances, with more test time on the Star YZ250F, and without the stall, he looked like he could have put it in the top ten. We learned more on Saturday night in Indianapolis. Stay tuned.

• THE FIM AND BRITISH ACU BAN RUSSIAN RIDERS FROM COMPETING—USA AND CANADA TO FOLLOW SUIT

Russian Vsevolod Brylyakov was not allowed to start the Mantova MXGP, even though he had qualified well.

After the FIM announced that was was issuing a ban on any Russian-licensed or Belarussian-licensed athlete competing in any of its governed motorcycle racing events as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to take effect immediately on March 5. The British ACU Board of Directors immediately followed the FIM’s example and also imposed bans on Russia athletes and Belarussian athletes. It was so immediate that Russian Racer Vsevolod Brylyakov was not allowed to race the Mantova MXGP race after qualifying 19th and Evgeny Bobryshev will not be allowed to race the Revo British Championship on March 12. Additionally, the Russian Grand Prix, scheduled for May 1 in Orlyonok, was canceled and a replacement race will be announced soon.

Consistent with this action, riders from the Russian or Belrusian federations will also be prohibited from participation in the activities of both FIM North America member federations, the Canadian Motorcycle Association and the American Motorcyclist Association. Riders are typically required to secure start permissions from their home federations to race in a foreign country or be released from their home federations to the federation of the country hosting the event. Since the rights and privileges of the Russian and Belarusian federations have been suspended by the FIM, neither can grant a start permission nor provide a release. As a practical matter, riders from those federations are already prohibited from riding in other countries by the original FIM action.

Since the rights and privileges of the Russian and Belarusian federations have been suspended by the FIM, neither can grant a start permission nor provide a release. As a practical matter, riders from those federations are already prohibited from riding in other countries by the original FIM action

Henceforth the following provisional urgent and protective decisions have been taken which are effective immediately and stay in force until further notice:

To suspend, for the Motorcycle Federation of Russia (MFR) and the Belarusian Federation of Motorcycle Sport (BFMS), the issuance of FIM licences and the FIM licences already distributed. To suspend the functions of persons from MFR and BFMS acting as FIM Officials and as Commissions members/experts/agents of the FIM. As a result, no Russian and Belarusian riders, teams and officials can take part in any FIM Events and activities.

To suspend the registration of and to cancel all FIM Events such as FIM International Meetings, FIM World Championships and FIM Prize Events taking place in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine and, if applicable, to relocate these FIM Events to another country.

To interrupt any other FIM activities including but not limited to seminars, commissions meetings, training camps taking place in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The FIM Board of Directors unanimously recommends to all Affiliated Members and Continental Unions to apply these measures at the national and continental levels.

Roy Humphrey, the ACU Ltd Chairman said, “We sympathise with all those suffering as a result of the invasion from Russia. We support of the FIM and the FIME’s position on the current circumstances in the Ukraine and as such we stand by the decision and guidance issued by the FIM World Governing Body.”

• WHO’S WHO IN THE SUPERCROSS ZOO? THE TOP TEN HEADING TO DETROIT

Chase Sexton’s Detroit crash with Cooper Webb was violent. Chase not only took a hard blow to the head, but the spinning rear tire of his CRF450 landed on his back and ripped his jersey off. Chase is now sixth in 450 Supercross points and has to be gun shy after an all too common series of big crashes this season.

• BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: THE FRENCH-MADE BPS 125 ELAN

Note the lack of a gas cap on this 1975 Sachs powered BPS 125 Elan. The air filter is where the gas tank was normally found and the fuel was held under the seat.

Jacques Boudet was the French importer for AJS motorcycles and the president Molo Club Rouergat, when he met Gilles and Denis Portal at the race track. He told the two famous French racers that he wanted to build a French dirt bike. The Portals liked the idea and together they formed Motos Boudet-Portal, BP for short, in 1970. Unfortunately, they ran afoul of the giant BP oil company and eventually changed their name to BPS. Their first prototype in 1971 was a Puch-powered 125 that featured the airbox where the gas tank normally was the the gas tank under the seat. By 1973 they were ready to go into production the BPS 125 Elan. The Puch engine had been dropped for the more readily available Sachs 125 engine that was used in lots of boutique 125 race bikes. They built a 125, 175 and small run of Maico 400 engined machines.

This is a BPS Navaho RC50. This is a 1978 BPS Navaho RC50.

By 1975 they were producing 1600 bikes a year and made a deal to import Italian-built SWM motorcycles to France—the private-label deal allowed them to remove the SWM logos and put BPS in its place. They also expanded the BPS line with a range of 50cc Navaho bikes with Minarelli engines.

The Minarelli powered BPS Yak 50 bikes was a big seller in France. It came in different engines saise and off-road and trials versions. The Minarelli powered BPS Yak 50 bikes were a big sellers in France. The Yaks came in different engines sizes and off-road or trials versions.

They built a new factory in 1976 and hoped to sell 2500 motorcycle a year with the release of the Yak 50 and Yak 125—in addition to the arrival of the long-awaited Sachs seven-speed 250. They even started on a project to build their own engine, but never got it to production. The history BPS saw them use a wide variety of engines from outside suppliers. They used engines from Puch, Sachs, Maico, Minarelli and Aspes.

The Italian brand SWM didn’t sell their motorcycles in France in the early 1970s, so BPS imported them and changed the name on the tanks from SWM to BPS.

In 1977 they opened up an all-new factory and switched from Sachs to rotary-valve Rotax engines and sales jumped to 5000 units year, but by 1978 the writing was on the wall. French law, which had allowed 16-year-olds to ride engine sizes up to 125cc was reduced to 80cc—and sales slumped. Worse yet, the SWM factory set up an importer to bring the Italian brand to France—without relabeling it as a BPS. The company struggled until 1983 before closing its doors. In retrospect what BPS achieved in France from 1973 to 1983 was impressive for a company with a workforce of only 30 people.
