MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE PROS RETURN TO ACTION IN NEW YORK THIS WEEKEND

• 2021 AMA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS HEADING TO UNADILLA ON SATURDAY

Justin Barcia flirted with third in 450 points after Millville, but Eli Tomac took it back at Washougal. Barcia hoped that he could wrestle the spot back from Tomac at Unadilla, but a practice crash means that he will miss his home races and most likely lose fourth place (and could end up as far back as sixth in the 450 points standings.

• FRANCE CHOOSES ITS MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS TEAM— MUSQUIN IS BACK, BUT FEBVRE IS NOT

Marvin Musquin—450 class

Tom Vialle—250 class

Mathys Boisramé — Open class

Team France is definitely a compromised team for the French— as two of their powerhouse riders from the past, Gautier Paulin and Romain Febvre will not be on the team. Paulin retired at the end of last season and Febvre wants to focus on the 450 World Championship and doesn’t want the “very strange” mid-season MXDN date to interfere with his Grand Prix season. Additionally, Dylan Ferrandis turned down a spot. In the end, Marvin Musquin got the call to join Team France, but his relationship with the team has been strained since he last rode for them back in 2015. Joining Musquin will be current 250 World Champion Tom Vialle, who is not in the top ten in 250 points and thus doesn’t care if the 2021 Motocross Des Nations is taking place on September 26 (between rounds 11 and 12 of the 19-race World Championship series). Additionally, current 250 World Championship points leader Maxime Renaux has also refused to join the team so that he can focus on winning his first World Championship. Kawasaki rider Mathys Boisrame, who is currently seventh in the 250 World Standings will be the third rider (and racing the Open class, which is just a fancy name for the second 450 class).

THE SEPTEMBER 2021 ISSUE OF MXA IS ON ITS WAY? SUBSCRIBE! IT IS THE BEST DEAL IN THE SPORT!

The September 2021 issue of MXA is awesome. Not only did we build a GasGas MC 450F Factory Edition—with the sole goal of not using a boatload of Power Parts accessories, we also built a 44-horsepower KTM 150SX. Well, actually, we had Mitch Payton build the engine for us, but we took it to the World Two-Stroke Championship and holeshot both 125 Pro motos (yes, 150s are legal in the 125 class at the World Two-Stroke Championship). Then, we tested a 2022 TM 112MX SuperMini, while revealing photos of the 2022 Kawasaki KX112 SuperMini a few pages earlier. We interviewed Jammin’ Jimmy Weinert, had Mitch Payton explain the hoops that Pro Circuit had to jump through to stay afloat during the Covid-19 pandemic and, as the ultimate kicker, we had Josh Mosiman join the U.S. Air Force so we could get our hand on an F-16 Fighting Falcon for a test ride—see the photo below of Josh and his two wingmen guarding our nation at 10,00 feet.

2022 SUPERCROSS SCHEDULE: YOU KNOW IT’S REAL BECAUSE THERE ARE 3 ANAHEIMS

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE BEST SELLING OPEN CLASS FOUR-STROKE MOTOCROSS BIKE OF THE 1990s

Believe it or not, the big-bore Rotax-powered, American-made, ATK 604 four-stroke sold in crazy numbers back in the 1990s. It was designed by eccentric Austrian Horst Leitner and built in a “Santa Claus’ workshop” on Laguna Canyon Road. It was the best motocross-ready four-stroke of the decade. ATK had their own unique take on things, like the countershaft-mounted disc brake (to reduce unsprung weight on the rear wheel), the backward-facing rear brake pedal (so that it couldn’t get damaged in a crash or berm) and the anti-chain-torque rear chain line that allowed the rear suspension to move freely, even under hard acceleration. ATK was never the same after Horst sold it and moved on to building mountain bikes (like the Specialized FSR) and car parts like the AMP Bed Extender and Power Step.

• GLEN HELEN NITRO RALLYCROSS TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR NOV. 20-21 EVENT

Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Rallycross (NRC) is set to expand in a big way, announcing a full championship series comprising five races in 2021. In 2022, NRX will go even bigger with a 10-stop global championship with races in North America, Europe and the Middle East. The new championship will also feature a revolutionary electric vehicle supercar class, which will be introduced in 2022. Travis Pastrana said, “Since day one, I have truly believed that Nitro Rallycross has the potential to be the most exciting motorsports series on the planet. When we built the first NRX course in Utah we knew we had something special — from the drivers’ genuine smiles to the astonished fans as cars flew side-by-side over 100-foot jumps. Now, as we get ready for the next chapter of NRX, I’m more convinced than ever that this will bring top drivers from all disciplines to challenge themselves as their teams push the envelope in vehicle development. It’s going to be a hell of a ride and this is only the beginning.” You can purchase tickets now by Clicking Here.
