EVAN FERRY INTERVIEW: 19-YEAR-OLD MAKES SUPERCROSS DEBUT ON TRIUMPH

For many reasons, the Detroit round of Supercross looks to be amazing! It’s covered, so no rain, and the 450 class competition has been amazing. Along with that, it’s round one of the 250 East Coast series. Finally, Detroit will see the debut of the new Triumph 250 team. The team, comprised of Jalek Swoll, and rookie Evan Ferry, will be making history on the all-new triumph TF 250-x. While Swoll has been around for a few years, Detroit will be nineteen-year-old Evan Ferry’s first pro race. Before Detroit, Evan Ferry has only competed at three Supercross Futures rounds. What can we expect from Evan, whose dad Tim Ferry won the 1997 East Coast Supercross 125 championship remains to be seen, but its likely a historical Supercross moment–especially for the Ferry family. We had a few minutes to talk to Evan just prior to his first media day laps at Detroit.

EVAN, YOUR VERY FIRST PRO RACE, YOU ARE ON A BRAND-NEW TEAM, AND NEW BIKE. A LOT OF EXCITEMENT AROUND THE DETROIT SUPERCROSS. Yes, it is a super cool opportunity. It is my first round ever on Supercross but then also, it’s the first race for this bike and first race for the team. It is going to be super cool.

AND YOU ARE A FULL-TIME PRO, AND NOT DOING ANY MORE SUPERCROSS FUTURES OR MOTO COMBINE ROUNDS? Yes, I’m a full-time pro from here on now. That’s my focus, and I’m looking forward to it! I may not be looking to go out and win on Saturday, but I am hoping to ride my best, give it everything, and hold my own.

WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN RIDING, AND TESTING? We have been down in Culloden, Georgia, riding and testing at the old Moto X Training Facility. I started riding there probably a little over a year ago.

YOU WERE SIGNED WITH ROCKSTAR HUSQVARNA FOR A WHILE AS AN AMATUER, AND ALSO DID A COUPLE OF MOTO COMBINES AND SUPERCROSS  FUTURES ON A YAMAHA. CAN YOU COMPARE YOUR TRIUMPH TO THOSE TWO AT ALL? Honestly, it has its own unique feel. Almost half Husqvarna, and half Yamaha with its aluminum frame. Motor-wise, it is very competitive. It is right there with all the bikes that I have raced before. It’s awesome.

HAVE YOU BEEN GETTING SOME ADVICE FROM YOUR DAD COMING INTO YOUR VERY FIRST PRO RACE? No, we have not really talked about it a whole lot. We probably talked a little more about the game plan for tomorrow, about just being smart, using my head and just to make it through the day. Then going forward to make it to every round, and just get a little bit better.

FINALLY, WHAT EXPECTATIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF THIS WEEK AND YOUR FIRST PRO SUPERCROSS? Obviously, getting in the main, and fight up there with those guys for as long as I can. This is my first season, and I just want to make it through every single round. My focus in Detroit is to make it through clean and healthy. We have some of the best in the business working within this team, and I want to do my parts!
