REM GLEN HELEN RACE REPORT: SEAN COLLIER, JUSTIN JONES & FRANK EMERSON
Photos by Dan Alamangos & Debbi Tamietti
Sean Collier (207) is getting ready for the AMA Nationals. Last week he raced the World Two-Stroke Championship and this week he did double duty at the California Classic on the front track and REM on the back track. He won both 450 motos on his KX450F.
REM’s weekly moto wars are very unique to American motocross. The last race of the 2014 season was on December 27, 2014 and the first race of the 2015 season was on January 3, 2015. If you want to race, REM holds the most races of any race organization in the USA. After about 40 races, the 2016 season will start without a break from 2015. REM races virtually every weekend of the year from January to January…and many of their regular racers never miss an event. It is the last bastion of the quickly declining number of “Saddleback Specialists” from the 1970s. It also has the largest turnout of Over-50 and Over-60 racers in the world. It must be doing something right.
Justin Jones splits his time between motocross, WORCS and the ISDT (where he led the U.S. Junior team to a Gold Medal last year). At REM he led both 450 Pro motos, but Sean Collier got by both times. Justin said, “I love to watch that guy ride, just not from behind him.”
What you’d never know about this photo. The front two riders are 450 Pros Justin Jones (42) and Sean Collier (207). The next two riders are Over-50 Elite riders Willy Simons (46) and Jon Ortner (10). Simons would finish third overall in the combined Pro, Intermediate and Over-50 race.
Test riders are weird. When Randel Fout was told that he was too light for the suspension on MXA’s 450SXF Factory Edition, he put on a skin diving weight belt to add 10 quick pounds. He forget about the lead weights bouncing up and down through the rough.
Believe it or not Frank Emerson took his 1983 Husqvarna 500CR twin-shocker to the first moto win in the Over-50 Novice class. He ended the day in second overall when his 1-4 was bested by John Caper’s 3-2.
Mark Hall rode MXA’s KTM 250SX two-stroke for a couple laps last weekend at the World Two-Stroke race and asked if he could race it this weekend at REM. Amazingly, he had his best finish of the last year on the smoker. Mark was fourth overall behind Luther French, Phil Dowell and Val Tamietti in the Over-50 Experts.
Glen Helen doesn’t want you to forget where you are, so they installed giant Hollywood-style signs on both sides of the valley. Jody doesn’t need a reminder because he will be spending the next month at Glen Helen working on the AMA National track.
REM races every weekend in April. Next weekend, April 18, they will be on the REM track and on April 25, they will be on the AMA National track. For more info go to www.remsatmx.com
