MXA MOTO-CHALLENGE: WE’LL TELL YOU WHO IT IS, YOU TELL US WHAT’S STRANGE ABOUT THIS PHOTO

This is British star and Greeves factory rider Dave Bickers. Dave was the 1960-1961 European 250 Motocross Champion (in 1959, ’60 and ’61  there was not an official 250 World Championship, so the European Champion was considered the World Champion.) But there is something strange about this photo of Dave Bickers. Can you guess what it is? Answer at the bottom of the page.

HONDA DROP-KICKS THE DINOSAUR BIKE FOR AN ALL-NEW E-REX

The 2019 Mugen-Honda E.Rex electric prototype. Note the new electric motor compared to the previous concept bike (below).

Two years ago Mugen-Honda released a tongue-in-cheek electric motocross bike in a dinosaur motif. No one took it seriously because it was so stupid looking. Now, two years later there is a new Mugen E.Rex.

The 2017 dinosaur-theme E.Rex concept bike.

Unlike the dinosaur bike, the new E. Rex uses a version of the electric motor used in their Tokyo Show CRF-E electric bike. Yes, it still has the skeleton ribs, but they have been redesigned to avoid the laughter of their previous Fred Flintstone Replica concept bike.

CLASSIC MXA TEST RIDER PHOTO: WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN 1975?

Hard to believe, but this is MXA’s Jody Weisel testing a Montesa Cappra VA 250 in 1975. If our math skills don’t fail us, this photo was shot 44 years ago. Note the Heckel boots, goat skin leathers, socks over the boots, no gloves and “192” on the helmet.

This photo of Jody was shot last weekend at Cahuilla Creek. He’s not on a Montesa anymore or wearing Heckel boots, but he’s still racing. Or as Jody says, “I’m gonna keep doing it until I get it right.”

ZACH BELL’S 2018 WORLD TWO-STROKE WINNING HUSKY TC250

2019 WORLD TWO-STROKE TRACK MAP: YOU CAN THANK THE RAIN FOR ALL THE SAND

The Talledega first turn, Shoei Hill, Mt. Saint Helen, Hip Jump, mellowed-out Triple Step-Up  and Step-down from the REM track are all familiar to Glen Helen regulars. You can click on the track map to make it larger to see the layout closer. After you come down from the REM track, the rest of the track is completely new. There is lots of sand against the cliff below the REM pits. A series of turns leads to a banked right hand turn at the Wall Jump (the Wall Jump will not be used). Then, there is a left/right combination to go under the bridge and up Mt. Saint Helen, but it turns just before the top and comes down The Falls. At the bottom of the Falls the track turns right over a small tabletop, drops left down to a straight that goes back towards the other side of the Wall Jump, where a big banked corner leads to the finish line table top. After the finish line, there are two flat tabletops and a right hand turn that takes riders up into the sand sections below Talledega. Once through the sand, you go up and over the Log Cabin and start a new lap. This is a not a jump track — it is a real motocross track with long lap times, deep sand and lots of challenging sections. No wimps. No four-strokes.

MXA TEAM TESTED: 2019 KAWASAKI KX450 ARC POWER LEVER WITH FLIP CHIPS

When we had trouble with our stock 2019 Kawasaki clutch lever, we called ARC’s Bob Barnett. If he’s good enough for Eli Tomac, he’s good enough for us. When we met Bob at the track, we told him we had two issues with the stock 2019 KX450 clutch lever. The first, the clutch lever hit our fingers when we pulled the clutch in. Bob said that he had a lever that could fix that. Second, we were burning up KX450 clutches for no good reason. Bob said that he knew what the problem was and had a lever that could fix it.

Bob installed his 6-way adjustable PowerLever on our KX450. This isn’t just any lever. It comes with three “FlipChip” inserts that give you six different power ratios for your clutch. The FlipChip is a small block of aluminum with divots machined on each side of it. Each divot is machined into a different location on the aluminum block. The six divots offer different ratios that change the distance from the lever pivot center to the centerline of the push-rod that actuates the clutch master cylinder plunger. By changing from the softest divot to the hardest divot, you can change how far the master cylinder plunger is pushed. In the case of our KX450 clutch mechanism, we needed the FlipChip divot that pushed the plunger sooner and farther for the same throw of the lever. This disengaged the clutch sooner and thus farther away from our fingers.

With ARC’s PowerLever, the clutch is fully disengaged. It works likes this: when you use the 14mm chip, you get the “softest” feel. If you flip it to the 19mm divot, you get the “hardest” feel. You can switch to any of the six divots to find the best feel for you. Additionally, ARC clutch levers compensate for Rekluse-style clutches, and hydraulic clutches benefit greatly from the ability to overdrive the master cylinder, and to get that “pinch” more pull when needed.

It solved our problem with the KX450 clutch. Plus, we liked the shape and bend of the ARC levers much better than the KX450 levers, especially because the 2019 KX450 comes with totally different shaped levers on the clutch and brake. We added an ARC brake lever along with the clutch lever to make the two levers feel the same. If an ARC lever breaks, the company will replace it for a nominal $15 fee.

DIGITS? $129.99 (PowerLever clutch)www.arclevers.com or (714) 543-0362.

MXA RATING: We suffered a recurring problem with the 2019 clutch lever and ARC fixed it. Kudos.

JEEP MAKES A PROTOTYPE BIKE HAULER CALLED THE “FLATBILL”

According to Car and Driver: The Jeep Flatbill is based on the Jeep JT Gladiator pickup and was one of six concepts specially made for Jeep’s annual Easter Safari in Moab, Utah. Equipped with Dynatrac ProRock 60 front and rear axles, a four-inch lift, 20-inch wheels and 40-inch tires, the short bed pickup doesn’t come with a tailgate, but ramps that extend out the back to help load up bikes. A tube rear bumper joins custom body work with fender flares, a carbon hood insert and a name that probably won’t appeal to actual Jeep buyers—but Cooper Webb would buy one.

HAVE YOU SEEN YAMAHA’S YG-M FC PROTOTYPE

The Yamaha YGM FC Prototype is designed for either ride sharing, vehicle sharing, easy transportation in gated communities or congested areas. Yamaha says that compared to an electric-power vehicle of this type, this fuel-cell prototype has longer range and shorter refueling time. It is kind of a glorified golf cart. Yamaha will start doing public road testing of the YB-M FC next week on a specific route in the Wajima city center course in Wajima City.
