THE NEWS MERRY-GO-ROUND WHIRLS, JUMP ON

pursebarcia51Justin Barcia on the mend.

BARCIA MISSED BIG TEX: A doctor has confirmed that JGR’s Justin Barcia has a crack in his pelvic bone from a practice crash a week ago. The injury does not require surgery, but Barcia missed San Diego and Dallas. His status for Atlanta will be updated as his recovery progresses.

WESTON CAME BACK: With Barcia on the sidelines, JGR’s Weston Peick, who was injured at the Phoenix round, raced at Dallas. Unfortunately, Weston was in a big first turn crash and didn’t make a single lap of the main event.

JAKE CANADA: Jake posted this, “One of the toughest pills I’ve had to swallow in my life, but to all my sponsors, family, friends, and fans. I’m hanging up the boots!” Canada was making a comeback of sorts this season in the 250 West, but failed to make any main events.

SPONSOR DOLLARS: Monster Energy drops its sponsorship of the Australian National Motoctoss Championships. After three years, Monster has pulled the plug on the Oz Nationals, but it didn’t come as a surprise to the series’ promoters. They say that they plan to work on building a bigger round-by-round audience, going to individual round sponsorship in 2016 and focusing on their TV deal. For more info go to www.mxnationals.com.au.

FAST FREDDY: San Diego was Swede Fredrik Noren’s last Supercross with MotoSport GPI Honda. He will start doing outdoor testing for the American Honda team after a shortbreak. Colt Nichols and Kyle Peters will join the MotoSport GPI Honda team for the 250 East series.

VICKI GOLDEN: This weekend Vicki Golden attempted to become the first women to ever make a 250 Supercross event. She didn’t make the night show —qualifying 52nd. Vicki isn’t the first women to try to make a Supercross night show, so the golden goose would be to actually make the night program. The real golden goose, assuming that Vicki Golden can make a night program would be to make a main. Then, rthe ultimate would be the first women in a 450 main. She will be in Atlanta for another attempt at making the “Fast 40” in practice.

GEICO ROOKIE: Geico Honda’s rookie Jordon Smith crashed and had a plate with six screws put in his hand. He saids that he wass going to show up in Dallas and race, but the injury was too great to make that happen.

BRETTCALFE: Brett Metcalfe only had a six-ride deal for Supercross because he is going to race the Canadian Nationals again. Brett was sitting 14th in the points after six races, with his best result an 11th at San Diego. Canada doesn’t start until May 31, so Brett could do Hangtown and Glen Helen before heading north.

ENGLISH NEWS: British 250 motocross champion Matiss Karro suffered a knee injury and will miss the start of the British Championships. No word on whether his Route77energy MVRD Honda will hire a fill-in rider. Elliott Banks-Browne broke his tib-fib at the Glascow Arenacross.

BIKES SALES: The MIC reports that the U.S. motorcycle sales grew 3.8% in 2014. A total of 483,526 two-wheelers were sold in 2014, this is the fourth year in a row that sales numbers have gone up, but don’t get to happy just yet. The sales in 2014 are way down from 2008’s 879,910 units. The best news is that offroad sales were up almost 11% (81,013 units). Dual-sport sales were up 3.6%, while road sales were up 3%.

THE DIESEL NICKNAME DOES NOT SIT WELL WITH THE DUNGE

Dungey103238

Nothing is sadder than having some TV announcer throwing in an offhand remark about a nickname during a broadcast and it is attached to a rider for the rest of his life. As a rule of thumb, riders don’t get to choose their own nicknames, they typically come about through alliteration, acronymization or razzing. The “Rhinestone Cowboy” got his nickname because he was from Texas and wore flashy colored tennis shoes that reminded his fellow racers of rhinestone jewelry (plus the song and movie were popular at the time). Blake Baggett got the incredibly stupid mythical Mexican creature nickname “El Chupacabra” because it was bantered about on TV — which is still the only place that anyone actually calls Blake that (probably because it has no meaning or connection with Baggett’s history). Unlike the good old days of “The Jammer,” “Too Tall,” “Hurricane,” “Gassin Gaylon,” “Short Stack,” “Sugar Bear,” “Captain Cobalt,” “The Bomber” or “Bad Brad,” modern nickname have dissolved into unimaginative initials, like RD5 and RV2, so that they are easy to spell for the internet masses. So, when someone called Ryan Dungey the “Diesel” on TV, it sparked an interest in the public because apart from his initials (which are the same as “The Man’s”) Ryan has never had a true racing nickname, except for the shortened version of his last name — Dungey into the “Dunge.”

The kicker? Ryan Dungey doesn’t want to be called “The Diesel.” And that leads to the crux of the nickname issue, traditionally riders don’t have a say in their own nicknames, although sometimes they can force the issue by having a butt patch made for their pants to lead people in the direction they like. Ryan Dungey would prefer not to be “Diesel Dungey,” but whether he is or isn’t rests in the hands of the public and the press. You know the TV announcers will keep using, but as for the rest of us…who knows?

BIKESBURGERSMXA068

Tom White’s “Early Years of Motocross Museum” houses one of the best collections of early motocross bikes on the planet and everyone should plan to visit it someday.
