• GODSPEED! JOHN DUFFY (1956-2021)

John Duffy was to triple clamps what Thomas Edison was to light bulbs.

John Duffy Jr, the founder and owner of Applied Racing, passed away on July 8, 2021. His innovative designs and forward thinking turned an aerospace company into a motorsport company. In 1991 John designed the first aftermarket triple clamps for dirt bikes, then added to the product list to make over the years to make Applied Racing a very successful business. He is survived by his wife Christi Duffy and his children Michelle and John.

The MXA wrecking crew had a long relationship with John and whenever we needed a special triple clamps for a project bike, or an oddball design to put one brand of fork on a different brand of bike, or to test an unavailable offset (like on the 2002 Honda CRF450), we called Applied. His workmanship was beyond reproach and he was always a fun guy to bounce ideas off of. The vast number of teams and riders that he helped will all miss his input (especially his friend Doug Dubach who insisted on having John machine him 24.5mm offset triple clamps for his YZ459F because an even number wasn’t good enough). We send our sincerest sympathy to wife Christi Duffy, who was an integral part of Applied, and his children Michelle and John.

• USA DELAYS MXDN TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT OUT OF FEAR THAT EUROPE WILL LOCKDOWN

Team USA up in the air.

Team USA was supposed to be announced at Unadilla last week, but instead said they would announce who was going to be on the MXDN team this week at Budds Creek, but now that Budds Creek is here, they say they want to wait until the Pala National on September 4 before the making the announcement—and that announcement might be that Team USA will not be sending a team to the Motocross des Nations.

Why the delay? Europe is caught up in another series of lockdowns from a resurgence of Covid-19 and it appears that there could be bad news coming from the European Union in the first week of September. It is all wait and see now! By the same token, Australia has a serious Covid problems and may also drop out of the MXDN and maybe even the ISDE—which is why Team Australian (Beaton and Lawrence  brothers) have dropped out.

• IS KEN ROCZEN SKIPPING THE 2021 MXDN?

Ken Roczen 2010 mxdn lakewood_-7Ken Roczen won’t be wearing the Team Germany jersey in 2021.

After last week’s win at Unadilla, Ken Roczen said that he might not race the Motocross des Nations for Team Germany. Roczen said: “I really wanted to race. I was ready to go, but now, after further review, I think with Honda, a little bit difficult time with the whole Covid situation and, of course, the situation over in Europe, I just feel like there are a lot of uncertainties. As of right now, obviously the race is happening, but who knows if there will be any fans allowed and, obviously, a lot of riders are not going to race. So, I feel like the pros and cons for me, they were a little bit more on the con side. I feel like this is such a special race that I feel like if you can’t do it all the way, then don’t do it at all type thing.”

Dylan Ferrandis 2018 MXDN qualifying race-05943Dylan Ferrandis at the 2018 Red Bud MXDN sporting the French tri-color. He won’t be at the MXDN this year either.

Ken Roczen, if he doesn’t do the MXDN, will be joined on the sidelines by Romain Febvre, Jeremy Seewer, Tim Gajser, Jago Geerts, Maxime Renaux, Jorge Prado, Ruben Fernandez and Dylan Ferrandis.

THE CURRENT LIST OF MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS TEAMS

Below is a list of the confirmed teams, but no team is actually “confirmed” with the Motocross des Nations more than a month away. When the American team is announced this weekend, there will still be four AMA Nationals left and the GP riders have eight GPs to race on their schedule after the September 26th MXDN. The MXGP schedule stretches into December (this is assuming that they still intend to do the three fly-away races in Argentina and Indonesia, but there is a chance that these races will be canceled and double-headers at more convenient European track will replace them).

LEVI SHERWOOD UNVEILS HIS CUSTOM FREESTYLE BIKE

Levi Sherwood’s unique freestyle bike. (Click on images to enlarge)

Levi debuted his new bike on his Instagram page and said, “There she is. I was waiting for a couple more parts to be finished before I put up any photos, but I figured I may as well just get into it. It’s been designed and built specifically for FMX. It uses a KTM 250SX motor, as well as WP suspension, everything else has been custom made all the way down to custom aluminum and titanium fasteners.”

A close look reveals that the exhaust pipe runs up and over the engine and the silencer exits downward (next to the shock). There is a small one-quart fuel tank on the left side. The rear suspension is no-link PDS and the bodywork is carbon fiber. The frame uses straight rectangular chromoly tubes with no bends in them. The swingarm is reminiscent of the CNC-machined Vertematti billet swingarms.

• THE 30-YEAR-OLD PROTOTYPE WHERE LEVI GOT MOST OF HIS IDEAS

Back in 1990, Horst Leitner built this prototype KTM 125 under commission from KTM as the “125 of the future.” Horst’s 1990 AMP Research 125 weighed under 190 pounds thanks to its minimalistic chromoly parallax frame design.(Click on images to enlarge)

Levi Sherwood’s FMX bike is creative, but it bears a striking resemblance to a bike designed 30 years ago by famous designer Horst Leitner. Horst’s frame was called a “parallax” frame. It was made up of two large-diameter, rectangular, chromoly spars that were straight and true — sans any bends. The footpegs and swingarm pivot mounted to uprights that also served to hold a CNC-machined aluminum bridge that tied the bottom of the frame together.

The no-link rear suspension was later used as the pattern for KTM’s PDS suspension. Note that the silencer routes downward by the shock and exits below the swingarm.

The silencer did not extend out the back of the AMP Research 125, but instead was routed through where the rear shock would normally have been.

New England’s Joe Waddington was the AMP Research KTM 125 test rider.

•MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: RACER ELITE CONNECTING RODS

Wiseco has added an all-new connecting rod to their growing line of Racer Elite products. Using F1 engineering tactics and industry-leading design software, the Wiseco Race Elite connecting rods were designed in-house and developed through extensive R&D, both with Wiseco’s in-house engine dyno and on the Supercross and motocross circuits with imput from Dean Baker, head of engine development at JGRMX and a 20-year veteran of professional race team engine building and tuning.

Racer Elite connecting rods are precision CNC-machined and held to tolerances as tight as one ten-thousandth of an inch in certain areas, and also feature a rolled-in bronze bushing in the small end, oiling slots and passages in both ends and carefully tested surface finishes. Each rod is measured and weighed before being given a unique serial number and specification sheet. Wiseco’s Racer Elite connecting rods are available for most newer model Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and Suzuki motocross-specific four-strokes. Every Racer Elite connecting rod kit includes the rod, OEM-quality crank pin, big-end rod bearing, and thrust washers where applicable. The rods are also available with slide bearings – or “plain” bearings – for certain OEM-equipped applications. For complete technical details visit www.blog.wiseco.com

THE SEPTEMBER 2021 ISSUE OF MXA IS ON ITS WAY? SUBSCRIBE! IT IS THE BEST DEAL IN THE SPORT!

The September 2021 issue of MXA is awesome. Not only did we build a GasGas MC 450F Factory Edition—with the sole goal of not using a boatload of Power Parts accessories, we also built a 44-horsepower KTM 150SX. Well, actually, we had Mitch Payton build the engine for us, but we took it to the World Two-Stroke Championship and holeshot both 125 Pro motos (yes, 150s are legal in the 125 class at the World Two-Stroke Championship). Then, we tested a 2022 TM 112MX SuperMini, while revealing photos of the 2022 Kawasaki KX112 SuperMini a few pages earlier. We interviewed Jammin’ Jimmy Weinert, had Mitch Payton explain the hoops that Pro Circuit had to jump through to stay afloat during the Covid-19 pandemic and, as the ultimate kicker, we had Josh Mosiman join the U.S. Air Force so we could get our hands on an F-16 Fighting Falcon for a test ride—see the photo below of Josh and his two favorite machines.

• ALL THE TECH DETAILS ON THE 2022 HONDA CRF250

Big news for CRF250 owners is that 2021’s dual exhaust ports and twin pipes are gone, replaced by a single-sided pipe and muffler. The single head pipe is 74mm closer to the engine on the right side. The right- and left-side plates are 20mm and 50mm more inboard, respectively, for a 70mm-narrower cross section at the rear, and the rear portion of the seat is 10mm lower for a flatter layout.

2022 HONDA CRF250 FEATURES

The 2022 CRF250 engine is all new, with the fuel injector’s angle increased from 30 to 60 degrees and the throttle body upped to 44mm. The titanium intake and exhaust valves are still 33mm and 26mm respectively, but the intake valves feature dual springs (one inside the other) for precise movement at higher rpm. The camshaft towers have been beefed up and valve action at higher revs is enhanced by more oil flow. The bore and stroke remains 79.0mm x 50.9mm, and the compression ratio is unchanged at 13.9:1 The shapes of the piston and connecting rod have been modified for more durability at high revs. The water-pump gear is thicker to improve strength. The 49mm Showa coil-spring forks get new upper and bottom triple clamps, largely in the ribs on the under side. The rear suspension system has a revised rising-rate ratio to work with a Showa shock absorber whose shape has changed to fit the new frame, with adjusters moved from the left side to the right. An ultra-light steel shock spring is a quarter-pound lighter than last year. The wheelbase is 10mm shorter, rake is relaxed .02 degrees (at 27.32 degrees), trail remains at 115mm and ground clearance is increased by 3mm (now 13.1 inches). The aluminum frame is 1.5 pounds lighter for 2022. Longitudinal rigidity is the same, but lateral rigidity is reduced by 20 percent to enhance handling feel when cornering. The clutch pack now has nine plates instead of eight, the clutch basket is more rigid, the primary ratio is lower, lubrication is optimized, and lever pull is 4 percent lighter.

Thanks to a new air intake, revised valve timing and a straightened exhaust port, there has been a 20-percent increase in power at 6500 rpm while still retaining strong top-end power. Airbox volume has been increased 78 percent, mostly on the clean side of the air filter.

Honda claims an 8-pound weight savings, which gets their weight (without gas) down to 220 pounds. The weight savings come courtesy of the CRF250 losing one exhaust port on the cylinder, one exhaust pipe and muffler on the left side of the bike, a lighter shock spring, and the shift drum is now 17 percent lighter.

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE 1974 HUSQVARNA 250CR MAGNESIUM ENGINE

It is always a quaint journey back to the good old days, because it makes modern bikes seem so superior, but then you find out that in 1974, which was 48 model years ago, Husqvarnas had magnesium cases. Which is why the 1974 Husqvarna 250CR was called the “250 Mag.”

The new championship will also feature a revolutionary electric vehicle supercar class, which will be introduced in 2022. Travis Pastrana said, “Since day one, I have truly believed that Nitro Rallycross has the potential to be the most exciting motorsports series on the planet. When we built the first NRX course in Utah we knew we had something special — from the drivers’ genuine smiles to the astonished fans as cars flew side-by-side over 100-foot jumps. Now, as we get ready for the next chapter of NRX, I’m more convinced than ever that this will bring top drivers from all disciplines to challenge themselves as their teams push the envelope in vehicle development.
