MOVE OVER GROM: THE 2017 KAWASAKI Z125 PRO IS COMING

kawasakiz125-i kawasakz1252The Kawasaki Z125 Pro packs 125cc of displacement, with digital fuel injection for the 2-valve SOHC air-cooled single-cylinder. Some expect the Z125 Pro to produce slightly more power than the Honda Grom, but as these figures are rather diminutive, we guess it won’t make a significant difference. The Kawasaki Z125 Pro weighs just under 225 pounds and has a two-gallon fuel capacity that should provide a decent range. The Kawasaki Z125 Pro has a four-speed transmission, 200mm front rotor and both wheels have 12″ rims. The bike could retail for $2999.

WADA, TENNIS, SHARAPOVA, BUBBA & MELDONIUM

harapovaProvisionally suspended, she will have to wait for her hearing…and we know how long that takes.

The high-profile news that tennis star Maria Sharapova, 28, failed a drug test, harks back to James Stewart’s WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) troubles in 2014-15. Sharapova’s defense is that she has been taking the banned meldonium for 10 years for health issues. The problem was that the WADA discovered that many athletes were using the drug for performance enhancing reasons and put it on the banned list (starting on January 1, 2016). WADA did a year-long investigation, where they looked for meldonium in athlete’s samples, before the drug was put on the banned list. They found that a large number of athletes were using the drug—without any medical reason—especially athletes from former Soviet-Bloc countries.

Sharapova is the fourth athlete to be busted by WADA for using this drug since it was added to the banned list. Two Ukrainian biathletes, a Russian cyclist and a Russian ice dancer also failed the tests. Meldonium is used to treat heart disease and improves the flow of blood to the heart. It is not medically approved for use in the United States.

Sharapova, who claims she didn’t know the drug was added to the banned list, faces a possible two-year suspension. Ignorance of the WADA list is not an excuse since it is fairly well publicized in athletic circles. It is assumed that the best the Russian tennis star could get is a one-year suspension. At this time, Sharapova has been provisionally banned from tennis until her case is heard. Meanwhile, sponsors Nike, TAG Heuer and Porsche have suspended their relationships with her.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: FLY KINETIC MESH RACE GEAR

HOW MANY RACES BACK IS THE 450 PACK?

IMG_1066They are all racing against the number 1, but none of them are racing on the same race.

Nobody is racing on the same race as Ryan Dungey—which means he can DNF a race and still maintain his points lead. The AMA pays 25 points to the winner of every race, and once a rider gets more than 25 points ahead of his competition, he has a one-race safety net, 50 points is a two-race safety net, 75 points is a three-race safety net and so on.

The closest: Ken Roczen (94) is 39 point back. That is one race (25 points), plus 14 points adrift.

Second closest: Jason Anderson (21) is 50-points behind. That is exactly two races behind Dungey.

Eli Tomac is 59 points adrift, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF two races and still lead by 9 points.

Cole Seely is 68 points back, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF two races, and still lead by 18 points.

Chad Reed is 72 points behind, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF two races, and still lead by 22 points.

Marvin Musquin is 79 points back, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF three races, and still lead by 4 points.

Everyone outside of the top seven is at least four races (100 points) behind Ryan Dungey.

James Stewart is 204 points back, which means that Ryan Dungey has already eliminated James from the title chase.

ROCK & CROSS: AC/DC LEAD SINGER GOING DEAF

acdcThis could well be the top five from the 1977 AMA 125 Nationals.

A German study has found that rock musicians are four times more likely to suffer from hearing disorders than the general public. Now, AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson has been told by doctors that if he keeps playing rock concerts he risks going totally deaf. In response AC/DC have canceled their remaining “Rock or Bust” tour. They will replace Johnson in future dates with guest vocalists.

While this may seem to have little to do with motocross, nothing could be further from the truth. A study done by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on NASCAR found that 30 seconds in a race car without hearing protection can lead to hearing loss. King Richard Petty and many of the drivers from the early era of NASCAR now wear hearing aids. Noise induced hearing loss is also prevalent in motorcycle racing. It is caused by exposure to continuous high-levels of noise—and not just for riders, but for mechanics and spectators also. Noise-induced hearing loss is the second most common form of hearing loss. The best prevention is ear plugs, but they are little used in the sport of motocross.

A VINTAGE WAY TO GET YOUR VINTAGE BULTACO TO THE TRACK

pipeburngarretmeyersCraig Marleau of Kick Start Garage in Northern California started with the idea of jumping on his vintage BMW motorcycle and using it to transport a vintage motocross bike to the races — thus doubling the fun. The “Taco Truck” is a 1971 BMW R75/5 with a fully suspended sidecar trailer on it that allows him to ride his 1971 BMW to the track and unload his 1973 Bultaco Pursang and race it. WANT TO FLAG AT THE GLEN HELEN NATIONAL ON MAY 28?
ghnetflag

REM promoter Frank Thomason has been in charge of the Glen Helen AMA 250/450 National flaggers for as long as anyone can remember. As a rule, Frank chooses his flaggers from the ranks of motocross racers, starting with his own REM Glen Helen riders, but there are always spots open to anyone who would like to be more than a spectator. It is an incredibly important job and the safety of the riders lays in the balance. Oh yeah, it’s also a thankless task—except for those who have been saved by a man with a flag. If you’d like to sign up email Frank at [email protected]
