IT WAS GLORIOUS WHILE IT LASTED! JUSTIN HILL MISSES DETROIT

Justin HIll 36 Troy Lee KTM LMP_2175After winning the 250 East race in Toronto last Saturday, Troy Lee Design’s KTM ride Justin Hill crashed in practice at the Detroit Supercross. He got up and walked away under his own power, but couldn’t race. Hill is now 17 points back in the title chase, but with this year’s story lines that’s not so big.

COLTON HAAKER & HUSQVARNA WIN SUPERENDURO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

coltonhaakersuperenduro-spainRockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Colton Haaker.

Wrapping up his first season in the SuperEnduro World Championship Husqvarna’s Colton Haaker became the 2016 FIM SuperEnduro World Champion. Colton Haaker said, “I’m pretty pumped for winning the World Championship. It’s just so nice to see all that hard work paying off. Honestly, this season was just insane. It was my rookie year racing the series, so I knew I had a lot to learn. I started the championship with a fourth overall in Poland, and then kept building on that. Since Poland I never missed the overall podium. The final in Madrid was just another crazy night of racing and it all came down to the last corners of the last lap. I made a last lap pass on Cody Webb for the championship. It was a super exciting moment.”

AMA MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME RULE CHANGES

hallofexhibit

The AMA Hall of Fame is changing its voting procedures for Hall of Fame inclusion. The changes include:

(1) A “Highly Qualified Candidate” category that will be established to nominate candidates whose accomplishments have taken place outside the public eye, but have played a significant role in motorcycling. This category will beindependent of the normal procedures because it gives the the independent Hall of Fame Selection Committees a tool to recognize advocates and other behind-the-scenes workers whose accomplishments have played a major role in motorcycling, but go unnoticed.

(2) Starting with the 2016 Hall of Fame class, all AMA Life Members (with at least 25 consecutive years of membership) will be invited to vote for Hall of Fame inductees. This includes all AMA Charter Life Members and paid AMA Life Members who have at least 25 consecutive years of membership. In addition, in recognition of the ongoing financial support that the AMA and its members contribute to the Hall of Fame, all current AMA members who show their valid AMA card will receive free entry into the Hall of Fame museum.

MXA MINI-VIEW: BRAZILIAN CHAMP ANTONIO BALBI

USbalbi

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO LATELY? It has been a long time since I raced in the US. I lived here from 2006 to 2010 and since then I have been racing the Brazilian Nationals. I’m from Brazil so I race the Brazilian championship back home along with doing riding schools to keep busy. I still have a house here in California, so I come to get ready for the championship back home. The first round of the Brazilian Nationals is on April 10.

HOW ARE THE RIDING SCHOOLS GOING? The schools are going well back home. I made myself a pretty decent name. The time I was racing in the USA really helped a lot. Many Brazilian people followed what was happening in the US. I was doing really well here. I had some top 10s, and top 5s in Supercross and outdoors so I become well known. Right now I have been training a lot of kids, but I still find still time to race. It has been busy, but it has been fun.

ANY BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRAZILIAN SOIL AND US SOIL? To be honest, here everything is soft and the tracks are a lot faster than in Brazil.  Over there we ride a lot of hard packed tracks and they are really tight. It is a different environment, but it is still the motorcycle and the rider.

HOW MANY RACES BEHIND DUNGEY IS THE 450 PACK?

dungery800Even though Ryan Dungey’s Detroit penalty cost him 5 points, he still gained points on Ken Roczen.

Nobody is racing on the same race as Ryan Dungey—which means he can DNF a race and still maintain his Supercross points lead. The AMA pays 25 points to the winner of every race, and once a rider gets more than 25 points ahead of his competition, he has a one-race safety net, 50 points is a two-race safety net, 75 points is a three-race safety net and so on.

The closest: Ken Roczen (94) is 39 points back. which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF one race (25 points), and still lead by 14 points.

Second closest: Jason Anderson (21) is 53-points behind, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF two races, and still lead by 3 points.

Eli Tomac is 67 points adrift, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF two races and still lead by 17 points.

Marvin Musquin is 75 points back, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF three races and still lead Musquin.

Cole Seely is 80 points back, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF three races, and still lead by 5 points.

Chad Reed is 93 points behind, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF three races, and still lead by 18 points.

Justin Brayton is 125 points behind, which is exactly 5 races behind Dungey in points (with 6 races to go).

Justin Brayton is 125 points behind, which is exactly 5 races behind Dungey in points (with 6 races to go).

Davi Millsaps is 148 points behind, which Dungey could DNF five races, and still lead by 23 points.

Eliminated: Any rider who has fallen 150 or more points behind Ryan Dungey is already eliminated from even the remotest mathematical chance of winning the 450 title. These riders, through injury or other issues, are out of the running: Christophe Pourcel, Wil Hahn, Vince Friese, Justin Bogle, Blake Baggett, Phil Nicoletti, Broc Tickle, Justin Barcia, Andrew Short and James Stewart

WHERE WAS VICKY GOLDEN AT DETROIT?

VICKIGOLDENATL3Vicki Golden rode the first 250 East practice in Detroit, but felt sick and elected not to race this weekend.

MOTO-MAN’S PETE VETRANO DOWN

131vetranoPete Vetrano (37) in front of Terry Varner (34)

Motorcycle parts distributor and former TM, LEM, Vertematti and VOR importer Pete Vetrano was injured in a crash on Glen Helen’s Mt. Saint Helen downhill at the HYR 6-Hours of Glen Helen cross-country race on Sunday, March 13. Vetrano suffered a broke collarbone, shoulder blade, ribs and a punctured lung. He was let out of the hospital on Wednesady night and was Glen Helen on Saturday watching the REM races.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: DICK’S RACING INTELAJET KTM CARB MOD

intellajet33

Dick’s Racing progressively bores out the stock KTM 250SX two-stroke carb from 36mm to 39mm and installs the creative Intelajet system to build an effective KTM 250/300 two-stroke carb. It fits on all KTM two-stroke carbs from 2004 to 2015 and Husky TC250s from 2014-2015.

intellajet11Intelajet’s upstream emulsion tube kicks in a mist of fuel at high rpm.

VERDICT: Dick Wilk of Dick’s Racing taper-bores the stock KTM carb so that it flows from 36mm to 39mm; he can also taper-bore the ends for even more power. Tapering the carb’s bore makes the Keihin PWK work like a 36mm carb below one-third throttle but a big carb above that. The Intelajet is the two-stroke equivalent of the dual fuel-injection nozzles on the Kawasaki KX250F. The Keihin carb functions normally below two-thirds throttle, but as air velocity increases, excess fuel is sprayed out of the Intelajet’s emulsion tube upstream from the main jet. It has the feel of a supercharger. The Intelajet doesn’t dump raw fuel into the carb as much as it sprays a fine mist into the air stream to enhance fuel burn at high rpm. The amount of fuel coming through the emulsion tube is controlled by an air-bleed dial, which is accessible to the rider. The performance was a awesome! Incredible! Worth the money! Amazing! Fantastic! Unbelievable! Pick the adjective that you like best. The gain in top-end power and overrev was immediately noticeable to every MXA test rider. It has no effect on power below two-thirds throttle, but once the mist kicks in, the KTM 250SX feels like it has a jet pack attached to it. We love it.

intellajet22This dial controls air flow to the emulsion tube.

DIGITS: $425.00 (carb bored progressively from 36mm to 39mm with Intelajet installed); $250.00 (taper bored only), $30.00 (Intelajet mounting kit); $40.00 (taper-bore carb ends) — www.dicksracing.com or (916) 705-3193.

WANT TO FLAG AT THE GLEN HELEN NATIONAL ON MAY 28?
ghnetflag

REM promoter Frank Thomason has been in charge of the Glen Helen AMA 250/450 National flaggers for as long as anyone can remember. As a rule, Frank chooses his flaggers from the ranks of motocross racers, starting with his own REM Glen Helen riders, but there are always spots open to anyone who would like to be more than a spectator. It is an incredibly important job and the safety of the riders lays in the balance. Oh yeah, it’s also a thankless task—except for those who have been saved by a man with a flag. If you’d like to sign up email Frank at [email protected]

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO MXA AND MAKE MONEY

Or, you can wait for the product reviews, KTM 450SXF Factory Edition test and tech features to appear on the internet…in a couple months. Your choice.

Do you subscribe to MXA? You should. We know that you think that print magazines are dead and that the internet will fill the void, but most of the stuff in the current issue of MXA won’t appear on the web for several months, if at all. Luckily, you can get all of MXA on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle or Android by going to the Apple Store, Amazon or Google Play. Better yet get the Digital desktop version at https://hi-torque.com/product/motocross-action-digital-edition/ for $9.99 a year. The MXA test riders prefer the print version and not just because it is delivered by a uniformed employee of the U.S. Government, but because for only $15.99 you get 12 issues and a free $25 Gift Card from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. That means that there is a profit to be made in this deal for you. For the Print magazine go to: http://hi-torque.com/product/subscribe-to-motocross-action-magazine/
