CHRIS BLOSE STILL LEADS THE ARENACROSS PLAYOFFS

The Amsoil Arenacross Championship hosted its second round of their 5-race “Race to the Championship” this weekend in Salinas, Californa. It was the first-ever open-air venue and the first-ever mud arenacross. Mother Nature was a focal point of the race as rain made for a wet track that produced some of the most challenging conditions in the history of Arenacross (it rarely rains indoors). Ben Lamay emerged with his first overall win thanks to a tiebreaker over current championship points leader Chris Blose. Gavin Faith, who led the series points going into the Chase (before his big point lead was erased), finished finished third, but let a win slip away after crashing out of the lead in the final Main Event. Blose has a slim three-point lead over Faith heading into the third of five rounds in the Race to the Championship next weekend in Tacoma, Washington.

FAT LADY BLUES: WHO’S LEFT TO CHALLENGE DUNGEY?

DSC_9364James Stewart is 292 points adrift of Ryan Dungey. It has been a season to forget for Bubba—and a learning lesson about the management of post-concussion syndrome.

There are only 4 races and 100 points left to win in this year’s Supercross season. Ryan Dungey has eliminated all but 3 of his competitors (knocking off 3 other riders this weekend in Indy). The AMA pays 25 points to the winner of every race, and once a rider gets more than 25 points ahead of his competition, he has a one-race safety net, 50 points is a two-race safety net, 75 points is a three-race safety net and so on. Here is who’s left to catch Dungey.

Ken Roczen (94) is 45 points back, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF one race (25 points), and still lead by 20 points. Jason Anderson (21) is 63-points behind, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF two races, and still lead by 13 points. Eli Tomac is 91 points adrift, which means that Ryan Dungey could DNF three races and still lead by 16 point. Chad Reed is 110 points behind, which means that Ryan Dungey has eliminated Chad from the title chase. Chad is four races and 10 points behind. Only the top 4 have a mathematical chance of becoming the Champion, but barring catastrophe, Ryan Dungey could finish 9th in the next four rounds and still win the Championship—even if Ken Roczen won all four. And with each week race that Ryan Dungey finishes, the margin widens. Next week, there will only be 75 points left to earn an the week after that 50 points.

GODSPEED! MARTIN LAMPKIN (1950-2016)

Martin Lampkin during his hey-day in the 1970s. Photo: Kitchen

Former World Trails Champion Martin Lampkin, 65, succumbed to a year-long battle with cancer this past week. Lampkin was both the British and European trials champion, and won the Scottish Six-Day Trial three times. The Lampkin family has defined the sport of trials for decades. Martin followed in the footsteps of his older brothers, Arthur and Alan, and Martin’s son, Dougie, has won the Scottish Six-Day Trials nine times and is a 12-time World Trials Champion. Our thoughts are with the family.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: KALI SHIVA HELMET

shiva-2
At 1050 grams (2.3 pounds) the Kali Shiva is the lightest and smallest DOT full-face helmet on the market. While being light is a great talking point, Kali was focused on creating a smaller (30% smaller than the average helmet) and lighter (400 grams lighter than the average high-end helmet) helmet because recent research indicates that by reducing the size of a helmet by 10% could reduce the effects of rotational forces by 22%. The larger or heavier the helmet is, the more torque is being applied (Force = Mass*Acceleration).

shiva-15

The Shiva also has three different densities of foam in-molded into the helmets shell. The foam liner has different density foam molded together in pyramid-style shapes with a softer layer around the head and firmer foam in the pyramids to dissipate higher loads. “In-molded” means that the foam liner and outer shell are molded as one-piece. The Shiva also has a breakaway visor, less angular shape and integrated camera mounts. Retail price is $500 at www.kaliprotectives.com.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: HARDLINE TREAD DOCTOR SNIPER KIT

TREAD2

The Tread Doctor is a heated tire cutting tool that can cut new edges on the face of knobs or be used as a grooving tool (with the Sniper kit).

VERDICT: This is five-star product for a backyard engineer who loves to fine tune his bike. For MXA’s tastes, grooving is a better alternative than vertical cutting. Grooves provides extra edges for acceleration and braking. The Sniper kit does a great job.

DIGITS: $79.99 (Tread Doctor with Sniper kit), $69.99 (Sniper kit only), $59.99 (Tread Doctor without Sniper kit), $14.99 (replacement cutting blade), $13.99 (12 pack of grooving blades)–www.hardlineproducts.com or (805) 581-4700.
