AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: HOW OLD IS TOO OLD?

amaruleoftheweek

rulesageEveryone knows that a rider must be 16 years old to race the AMA Nationals or Supercross series, but did you know that there is an upper limit of 50 years old on being allowed entry to an AMA Pro race? If a 50-year-old wants to race he must get a doctor to sign a certificate of fitness (with an electrocardiogram).

foedish2016Ed Foedish (326) is currently the oldest AMA National racer at 55 years old.

Over the last couple years Arizona’s Ed Foedish has been the only 50-year-old to try to qualify for an AMA National. Foedish was fourth in the Over-50 Pro class at the World Vet in 2015 and third in 2016.

BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: ZUNDAPP MC125

Very few modern racers have ever seen a Zundapp outside of Steve McQueen  “Great Escape” chase scene

Founded in 1917 by Fritz Neumeyer to build detonators for the German World War I effort, Zundapp would soon turn its attention to building motorcycles to satisfy rising demand for affordable motorized transportation in the postwar years.

By 1933, the Zundapp KS750 used a flat-four boxer engine (a layout adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974), and 18,000 were produced for the German Wehrmacht in the Second World War. These bikes are often seen in WWII movies and documentary films.

Zundapp’s greatest success came at the ISDT won the 1973 and 1974 Andre Malherbe won the 125 World Cup Championships. Sadly, the Zundapp factory was shuttered in 1984. However, the name was sold to the Xunda Motor Company in Tianjin, China. Thus, there could be Zundapps whizzing around Beijing today.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: LIVIN’ LARGE

Jeans, work boots, open face helmet, Carrera goggles, down pipe, red tank CZ and a one-handed wheelie landing on MXA’s 1991 Honda CR250. MXA test rider Pete Maly was livin’ the good life back in the ’70s.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: TIMBERSLED TRIO FRONT SUSPENSION

The added fork for the Timbersled kit improves control, handling and comfort.

Timbersled announced, the brand fueling the rapid growth of snow biking, is taking the experience to the next level with the all-new Timbersled TRIOfront suspension. A first in the industry, the innovative Trio system makes it even easier and more cost-effective to convert a dirt bike to-and-from a snow bike. Once installed, it also provides the ultimate in control and handling.

Dirt bike owners will appreciate the quick-and-easy, bolt-on design which means more time is spent on the trails and back country than in the garage. A full install can be done in less than 30-minutes making the conversion to-and-from dirt to snow and back even easier. The system is also cost effective as the stock forks no longer must be retuned or rebuilt – saving more than $500 the first year.

The MXA wrecking crew has experience with Timbersled snow bikes. We love them!

Trio also provides improved control, handling and comfort due to the front suspension shock’s dual-rate air spring that provides indefinite adjustability for all riding levels, terrain or personal style. The shock also counters rider fatigue by eliminating bottoming out and decreasing diving, and minimizes impact to the ski due to increased lower fork protection.

Trio is compatible with all snow bike kits as long as the ARO spindle and ski are used. It also attaches to most brands of dirt bikes. The system retails for $899.99 and requires an install kit depending on bike type. It will be available at Timbersled dealers and online.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: DREAMS IN THE DUMPSTER

This Jody Weisel photograph was a classic. Not because it captured Brad Lackey’s 500 World Championship cap, but because Brad didn’t win the 500 World Championship for Kawasaki, the cap had been printed just in case Brad won.

A BIKE YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE RIDDEN

This Italian built Vertemati V495 was as rare as hens teeth. The exotic bike featured a hand-built engine, odd bolt-together frame and a three-speed gearbox, with neutral on the bottom.

MXA test rider Willy Musgrave raced the V495 several times, but couldn’t come to teRms with the tall chassis flexible frame and three-speed gearbox. It wasn’t the dream bike everybody thinks it was.

CLASSIC MOTOCROSS ADS: THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START

Need an engine? In 1971 Hodaka would sell you a four-speed 55cc two-stroke for $114.78 or a three-speed 80cc engine for $121.34.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: A SEA OF ORANGE

It would be hard to image how many orange helmets MXA has in its workshop, but we can tell you that the ones that hang from the ceiling or sit on the shelves are the ones that have been crashed…and retired.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: DUNLOP AT81-EX ENDURO TIRE
