MXA WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: ARE YOU READY FOR EAST VERSUS WEST?

REM 20th ANNIVERSARY MOTOCROSS & PRO PURSE 125 TWO-STROKE RACE MOVED TO SATURDAY, APRIL14

REM’s next race is on April 7, but they had to move their 20th anniversary race this weekend at Glen Helen to April 14 because of weather concerns and pit parking restriction that wouldn’t do justice to the sponsors and planned party activities.

The Spring Series starts on April 7 and on April 14 not only will they have special awards and prizes, but there will be a 125 Pro class, but you don’t have to be a Pro to race in the 125 race—just a guy with a hankering to hear his 125 two-stroke wind out. For more info go to www.remsatmx.com

HOW THIS WEEKEND’S 250 EAST/WEST SHOWDOWN WILL WORK

There is lots of talk in the pits that the 250 East isn’t as tough as the 250 West. Although there is always an effort to compare the East versus the West every season, the injures to R.J. Hampshire, Colt Nichols and Jimmy Decotis cost the East three “top ten” riders.

For 2018, Indianapolis and Las Vegas will have dual East and West races, but how will they work? Some industry insiders want Feld to choose the 40 riders that make the night show from timed qualifying to insure that the 40 fastest guys are in the heats, but it won’t work that way and it is possible for riders with faster lap times to be booted by riders who were slower in timed qualifying.

THE FAST 40: Timed qualifying will separate out the 20 fastest 250 East riders and the 20 fastest 250 West riders. These rider will advance to two heat races — but there will be a separate 250 East heat race and a separate 250 West heat race.

ADVANCE FROM HEATS: The top 9 from each heat will go to the 250 Main Event (guaranteeing that the two coasts will be represented by an equal number of riders from each region).

THE LAST CHANCE: The Last Chance will be the first time that riders from different coasts will race against each other — with 4 riders advancing to the final spots in the 22-man 250 Main.

AMA POINTS DIVVIED UP: AMA points will be paid, regardless of what coast the rider is from, by where they finished. Thus, the first 250 West rider could get less than the 26 points that he would earn if he won a stand-alone 250 West races. And, with the stupid change from 25 points for the winner to 26 points, which Feld said would make the points chase closer—the math is more complicated. Feld really changed the points system to allow them to pay more points to the 21st and 22nd place riders in the mains. These rider previous got the same single point as the 20th place rider.
