WHERE WAS NICK SCHMIDT LAST WEEK?

nickschmidt79German Roczen wins in America, American Schmidt wins in Germany.

Successful Supercross privateer Nick Schmidt was not at the San Diego Supercross last Saturday night. Was he injured? Nope. Nick was in Germany racing the ADAC German Supercross Championship. Schmidt, racing for Sturm Racing Suzuki, was trying to beat out fellow American Kyle Cunningham for the German title. Schmidt had a 23 point lead over Cunningham going in the final round in Dortmund, but on the first night of racing Schmidt fell in the first turn and looked like he would lose a lot of points to Cunningham. Bu, sadly, for Cunningham, he ended up crashing out of the race. On the second night in Dortmund Schmidt finished second behind title rival Kyle Cunningham to clinch the crown. That second gave him enough points to clinch his first German Supercross Championship. He’ll be back at Anaheim 2.

MXA PHOTO SEQUENCE OF THE  WEEK: BAGGETT’S WILD RIDE

MID WEEK-9650Starting next to Eli Tomac, Blake Baggett’s KTM got a massive jump off of the starting line once the pack cleared the starting gate. Blake said that his clutch felt funny right before the board turned sideways.

MID WEEK-9653With his bike vertical and the throttle still pegged, what happens next looks like a carrier take-off.

MID WEEK-9656Blake hung on as long as he could as his bike slingshots down the start straight

MID WEEK-9665Much like a Google Car in heavy traffic, the unmanned KTM 450SXF carved its own path.

MID WEEK-9663The rear fender gets the worst of it.

MID WEEK-9676Blake was finally reunited with his bike when it quit bouncing.

MXA’S AD OF THE WEEK: IF THIS WEEK WAS 40 YEAR AGO

SuzukiRM1001976It may be hard to believe today, but 40 years ago one of the most popular classes in motocross was the 100cc class. It wasn’t just for kids as it had Novice, Intermediate and Pro classes. This is Suzuki’s 1976 ad for the RM100, but you could buy a Yamaha 100, Hodaka 100, sleeved-down CR100s or Jeff Ward Racing 100cc Honda two-stroke engines in heavily modified XR75 frames. The class disappeared as bike prices climbed and no one wanted to buy a 100 when they could just buy an identical 125.

CLASSIC MXA TEST RIDER CRASHES

crashmxadennisAs a rule of thumb, MXA test riders hang on to the bike as long as they can. Why? Test riders are told that. “We need the bike to complete the test, but we can always get another test rider.” Here Dennis Stapleton rides the bucking bronc as long as possible.

febmxa2017coverInterested in getting a new bike this year? The Febuary 2017 issue of MXA is on the news stands now and includes the long-awaited 2017 MXA 450 Shootout. You should be reading MXA, and if you subscribe now you get a $25 gift certificate from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC which more than pays for your subscription.

Do you subscribe to MXA? You should. Luckily, you can get all of MXA on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle or Android by going to the Apple Store, Amazon or Google Play. Better yet get the Digital desktop version at https://hi-torque.com/product/motocross-action-digital-edition/ for $9.99 a year.

The MXA test riders prefer the print version and not just because it is delivered by a uniformed employee of the U.S. Government, but because right now you can get 12 issues for $15.95 and a free $25 Gift Card from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. That means that there is a profit to be made in this deal for you. For the Print magazine go to: https://hi-torque.com/product/motocross-action/
