REVISITING LAST WEEK’S 10 THINGS ABOUT NEW JERSEY…FOR VEGAS

Eli TomacEli Tomac is 9 points back.

Last week on this exact spot of this exact place, we pointed out 10 salient points about the 2017 AMA Supercross series heading into the New Jersey/New York round of the AMA Supercross series. We want to revisit and revise those ten points as the series heads to the final round in Las Vegas. we will star with last week’s item and then update it is bold type.

(1) Three points is nothing in the title chase. It is wrong to assume that the Championship is over. While Tomac’s riding has been stellar, let’s not forget that Eli dodged a big bullet in Seattle when he went end-over-end and managed to not get hurt or to break a lever. This Championship has more drama left.

Unfortunately for El he didn’t didn’t dodge the bullet in Met-Life Stadium. Although he got to the lead fast, he was pedaling through the tight corners very early in the race, which could have meant he was having issues with the front of his KX450F (which is what he complained about all of last year and in the first couple rounds this year). Then he fell. No big deal. Eli has come from the back before. But, he started making more mistakes, eventually casing a jump and cutting through the infield (a moved that got Joey Savatgy penalized). In short, he choked under the pressure and is now 9 point back. But 9 points is not the end. It is wrong to assume that the Championship now belongs to Ryan Dungey. This Championship still has more drama left

(2) With two races to go (New York and Las Vegas), Marvin Musquin is the only rider, other than Tomac and Dungey, to not be mathematically eliminated from the title chase. However, Marvin is only one little point short of having to settle for third place overall. Marvin is 49 points behind Eli Tomac with 50 points left to earn.

With one race to go, only Dungey and Tomac have a shot at the crown. Marvin Musquin is 49 points back in third place, but there are only 25 points left to win. But Marvin is fast, and got faster as the season progressed. He has a new two-year contract with KTM and wants to be on top in 2018.

salt lake pits-9784Davi Millsaps (above) and Blake Baggett.

(3) The racing has been great in 2017. First with Roczen, then with Dungey and now with Tomac, but it has also been exciting back behind the big names. The Rocky Mountain ATV/MX guys, Blake Baggett and Davi Millsaps, are tied at 190 point each after 15 races. They are dueling over sixth place in the standings and have finished within three places of each other 9 times out of 15 races. If Cole Seely, who is 21 points ahead of the duo,  has more issues with his leg in the next two rounds, one of them has a chance of making the top five in overall points.

The battle between the Rocky Mountain boys will continue in Las Vegas. They are not tied anymore in the battle for sixth place, but they are only two points apart. After last week they have now finished within three places of each other 10 out of 16 times. Additionally, Cole Seely came back at New Jersey to try to hold on to his fifth in the points, but rehurt his groin muscle in the race and only scored one point. Millsaps is now only 4 points out of fifth and Baggett 6 points out. As for Seely, he will probably be a no-show on the starting line in Las Vegas (to save himself for the 450 Nationals in three weeks).

Dean WilsonDean Wilson (15) moved up.

(4) Farther back behind Baggett and Millsaps, come Chad Reed and Dean Wilson. They are tied for 9th in points at 158 points each. They both have averaged 10.5 place finishes in 2017 (and are only 9 points behind Broc Tickle in 8th place). Statistically, Chad has the higher placing this season, with one podium (Phoenix) and one other top five (Toronto), but he has two single point races (Anaheim 1 and Detroit—where he was penalized for ignoring the blue flags). On the other hand, Dean only has one top five, but has always been higher than 13th in every race and in the top ten six times. With Broc Tickle, who is 9 points ahead of them in 8th place, injured in a practice crash this week and not coming back to Supercross this year, Reed and Wilson are racing for 8th over the next two races.

Dean Wilson rocketed from a tie with Chad Reed to sole possession of 8th place when he beat Reed in the 450 Main (and Broc Tickle got hurt during the week and dropped from 8th place to a tie with Chad Reed for 9th). Dean and Skippy are separated by only two points and neither of them has a mathematical chance of going any higher than 8th in the points standings no matter what they do in Vegas. The Wilson/Reed battle is one of pride. Dean wants to get back to the top and Chad wants to avoid going to the bottom.

Malcolm StewartMalcolm Stewart.

(5) There is no doubt that Malcolm Stewart has the speed to run up front, but not the fitness to keep the pace or the ability to keep off the ground. Malcolm has only scored two top ten finishes this season and is currently 15th in the 450 standings (although he did skip the first couple races while getting his Ride365 deal put together).

More of the same from Malcolm Stewart. He was 13th on the night in Jersey and is still 15th in the points. But, he was the center of attention earlier in the day when Josh Grant blaster him in the corner after Grant believed that Malcolm cross-jumped him. There is no doubt that Malcom did cross-jump in front of Grant, but maybe it was by accident. Either way, Grant had no way of knowing if it was just a mistake on the face of the previous jump or lunkhead riding by Malcolm. And he didn’t wait for the instant replay—he went for the jugular. In the 450 Main, Grant was seventh and is now 11th in 450 points.

Marvin MusquinMarvin Musquin was one of only 9 riders to have scored points in every race so far in 2017—now there are 7.

(6) Only nine 450 riders have scored points in all 15 races so far. They are Tomac, Dungey, Musquin, Baggett, Tickle, Reed, Wilson, Weimer and Friese. But, Broc Tickle broke his wrist at the Suzuki test track and will miss both New York and Las Vegas, so make that “Only eight riders” from New York on.

After New Jersey only seven 450 riders have scored points in all 16 races. They are Tomac, Dungey, Musquin, Baggett, Reed, Wilson and Weimer. Broc Tickle was a no-show in New Jersey, while, to the relief of many, Vince Freise wasn’t in new Jersey because his Moto-Concept team pulled out of the series (MotoConcepts Justin Brayton piggybacked with the Honda HRC team for pit support and it turns out that MotoConcepts did not want to make the long drive to New York and then back to Vegas, but Brayton and Friese will be in Vegas).

(7) 42 different riders made the 450 main events in the last 15 races (the maximum number of riders who could have made mains, if it was different riders every week in the top 20, would be 300. As the season has worn down, the rider turnouts have dwindled. Salt Lake City only had 45 riders signed up for the 450 class and Seattle only had 39.

As of Saturday’s count, 44 riders have now made the 450 main events in 2017. Bryce Stewart and Dakota Tedder joined the ranks in New Jersey. However rider turnout was down again—there weren’t enough riders in either class to have full 20 main gates in either the 250 East or the 450 heat races in New Jersey.

(8) Eli Tomac has led 162 laps to Ryan Dungey’s 87, Marvin Musquin’s 49 and Ken Roczen’s 37. Only two other riders have led any laps (Blake Baggett 2 and Davi Millsaps 2).

Eli Tomac has now led 163 laps to Ryan Dungey’s 96, Marvin Musquin’s 62 and Ken Roczen’s 37. Only three other riders have led any laps (Blake Baggett 2, Davi Millsaps 2 and Jason Anderson 1).

mike alessiThe former king of the starts has been shutout in 2017. In fact his average start is around 13th place.

(9) There is no holeshot king in the 450 class for 2017. Ryan Dungey leads the field with 3 holeshots, but Eli Tomac, Blake Bagget and Justin Bogle have 2 each, while Ken Roczen, Vince Frieses, Cooper Webb, Davi Millsaps and Marvin Musquin have one apiece. Mike Alessi, the former kings had no holeshots in the first 15 races and on average started in 13th place.

Jason Anderson got the holeshot this week, making him the 10th riders to lead to the chalk line in 16 races.

Ryan DungeyRyan Dungey’s average finishes are better than Eli Tomac’s, but Eli has racked up the wins to offset his poor start in the first few rounds. So far, the averages are beating the wins.

(10) The rider with the best average race finish so far in 2017 is…wait for it…Ryan Dungey. On average, Ryan has finished in 2.5 place, while Eli Tomac has finished 3.1. Of 42 riders who made a main event in 2017, only five riders averaged a top five start. They are Ryan Dungey (2.5), Eli Tomac (3.1), Marvin Musquin (4.9), Cole Seely (5.2) and Jason Anderson (5.7).

Ryan Dungey still has the best average finish of any rider in the 450 class. After New Jersey Ryan has finished in 2.4 place, while went from 3.1 to 3.4. The top finishers are Ryan Dungey (2.4), Eli Tomac (3.4), Marvin Musquin (4.8), Jason Anderson (5.5) and Cole Seely (6.4).

DAN ALAMANGO’S PHOTO OF THE WEEK

DANloganfoutYZ450FThey get younger every year. This kid could make it to the big time if: (1) His parents home school him (in the way that only parents who think their kid is going to be the next Ryan Dungey can). (2) Mortage the house, buy a motor home and pay exorbitant entry fees so that Junior can race a series of meaningless amateur championships (that no one remembers who won anyway). (3) Grows up in a normal family that understands turning the fun of riding a motorcycle into a business for a 5-year-old, is a great idea. ONE OF A KIND HODAKA 125 TWIN

HodakaSupertwin125 Former Hodaka racer Bob Rutten spotted this twin-cylinder Hodaka at the Trailblazer’s Banquet bike show. He fired this cell phone photo off to Jody Weisel to see if it was ever a production Hodaka.

YAMAGUCHISUPERTWIN125
Jody sent Bob back a photo of this early 1960s Yamaguchi Super Twin 125 street bike, which just happened to have the same engine in it. For those in the know, PABATCO of Oregon got their start importing Yamaguchi motorcycles. When Yamaguchi went belly up, PABATCO paired with Yamaguchi’s engine builder, Hodaka, to build their own bike. However, Hodaka never built a 125 twin for production, but it is a marvelous show bike.
