WANT TO RACE THE GLEN HELEN NATIONALS? THE TOP 20 PROS FROM THE WORLD TWO-STROKE WILL GET THEIR CHANCE

_DSC0005_Mike AlessiThe current World Two-Stroke Champion is Mike Alessi. He will be at Glen Helen on April 15 to defend his crown. It is a week off from the Supercross series, so lots of Pro could be there.

Good news for smoker fans! There will be a two-stroke class at the 2017 AMA 250/450 National at Glen Helen on May 27, 2017. This is a great opportunity, not only for the fans to see and hear the sounds of two-strokes, but for Pro riders, both young and old, to race on a full-blown AMA National track on the same day as Dungey, Musquin, Seely, Anderson, Osborne, Baggett, Webb and Tomac. How does a rider qualify to be invited into the National two-stroke field? That’s simple. A little more than a month before the Glen Helen National, the 2017 MTA World Two-Stroke Championship will be held at Glen Helen on Saturday, April 15 (with an $8000 purse). The top 20 Pro riders from the World Two-Stroke Championship will automatically be seeded into the Glen Helen National Two-Stroke Challenge field. Glen Helen will invite “wild card” riders to fill any spots that are vacated by Pro riders who are entered into the AMA 250 or 450 National classes (and thus can’t take their spot in the two-stroke race). For more information about the Glen Helen National and the MTA World Two-Stroke Championship, go to www.glenhelen.com.

MXA’S 60-SECOND 2017 250 FOUR-STROKE SHOOTOUT

250shootout800

NUMBER 1: 2017 KTM 250SXF

DKE_6868
No other 2017 250cc four-stroke can say it has the best overall power, weighs the least, has a bulletproof hydraulic clutch, incredible brakes, electric starting, a 14,000-rpm rev limiter, intuitive handling, an ingenious air-filter system and the best air forks ever made. There are innovations on the 2017 KTM that the Japanese brands will not get around to for at least four years. KTM 250SXF MINUSES: Its high-rpm engine demands talent on the owner’s part.

NUMBER 2: 2017 HUSQVARNA FC250

DKE_8446
The 2017 Husqvarna FC250 is the user-friendly version of the class-winning KTM 250SXF. It makes mellower power, revs slower and is more Novice-oriented than the orange bike. But, don’t think that means it is slow. It makes almost 4 more horses than its red, yellow, green or blue competitors. It’s just more comfortable, absorbent and pleasant than the KTM 250SXF. HUSQVARNA FC250 MINUSES: The airbox chokes up the engine, and it weighs 2 pounds more than the KTM.

NUMBER 3: 2017 YAMAHA YZ250F

500YZ250FIMGL8076-1
The 2017 YZ250F is up in horsepower across the board—and is exceptionally good in the low-end and midrange. With the exception of the elite Kayaba SSS suspension, the bulk of the YZ250F is a working-class hero. It is not blessed with the best handling, strongest brakes, lightest weight or most power. It gets the job done without any fanfare. The overall package is greater than the sum of its parts. YAMAHA YZ250F MINUSES: It’s loud (from both the muffler and airbox).

NUMBER 4: 2017 KAWASAKI KX250F

DKE_0173
The 2017 Kawasaki KX250F has improved handling, better ergonomics, upgraded suspension and weighs less than the 2016 model. We applaud Kawasaki for paying so much attention to the chassis, weight and ergonomic details. The 2017 KX250F chassis is a breath of fresh air, but we wish Kawasaki had left the engine alone. Every MXA test rider prefers last year’s full-blast engine over this year’s linear powerband. KAWASAKI KX250F MINUSES: We’d love the new powerband if it made 44 horses, but it only makes 40.

NUMBER 5: 2017 HONDA CRF250

DKE_9000
The 2017 Honda CRF250 is at its best in the hands of Beginners and Novices. Obviously, faster riders will either abandon the CRF250 or break out the credit card to buy real power. We don’t recommend spending money on hopping-up a CRF250, because your bank account isn’t big enough to make it as fast as a stock KTM—or as light. The 2017 Honda CRF250 weighs 2 pounds more than a 2017 KTM 450SXF. HONDA CRF250 MINUSES: Horsepower is overrated, but a total lack of horsepower does not rate.

NUMBER 6: 2017 SUZUKI RM-Z250

DKE_9740
You don’t buy an RM-Z250 for its power, brakes, clutch, accoutrements or modern looks. You buy it for its cornering ability. Sadly, most MXA test riders weren’t willing to give up the basic elements of a race bike for a tight-turning radius. The 2017 RM-Z250 only makes a 1/2 horsepower more than the 2011 RM-Z250. In the same time span, the KTM 250SXF gained 8 horsepower. SUZUKI RM-Z250 MINUSES: “Slow” is not good advertising copy.

YOUTHSTREAM & MXSPORTS UNITE FOR USGP & MXDN

mxgp18kevin-strijbosr20The 2017 USGP will be a cooperative effort between Youthstream and MXSports. There will also be a 2018 MXDN to go along with the previous two canceled MXDN’s in America. It won’t be at Glen Helen ever again—it’s moving East.

At Daytona last weekend Youthstream Vice President David Luongo and MX Sports Pro Racing President Davey Coombs were joined on the stage by Carrie Coombs, Rob Dingman and David Atlas to announce the start of a long-term partnership to hold MXGP events in the United States. The yet-to-be named USGP will be on September 3, 2017. According to this new deal, the United States will get the Motocross of Nations in 2018. We guess that  Luongo’s other choices, Iran and North Korea, will have to wait.

ELI TOMAC CLOSES IN ON DUNGEY

Jeremy MartinJeremy Martin’s one-off 450 Supercross ride help Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac and hurt teammate Cole Seely. Martin’s second place finish split the points leaders. Photo: Brian Converse

Last weekend Ryan Dungey was the only racer actually racing on the tenth round—every other racer was 25 points of more behind him. Now, after Eli Tomac’s win in Daytona, the Kawasaki rider closed the gap to 17 points with seven races left. With 25 points up for grabs at each race, there are 175 points left for any rider who can sweep the boards over the next 7 races. However, for every 25-point increment that a rider falls behind the points leader, he becomes one full race out of the lead. Here are the riders who are one, two, three, four and five races behind the points leader.

ON THE SAME RACE ON THE SAME RACE
Eli Tomac and Ryan Dungey are the only racers heading to Indy this weekend that are racing on the same race.

Cole SeelyCole Seely is now third in Supercross points. Photo: Brian Converse

ONE RACE BEHIND (MORE THAN 25 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)
Cole Seely is 45 points behind Dungey and  is one race and 20 points adrift of Dungey.

marvin musquinMarvin Musquinhas only scored 12 points in the last two races—Eli Tomac has scored 50. Photo: Brian Converse

TWO RACES BEHIND (MORE THAN 50 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)
Marvin Musquin, who was looking like title contender four races ago, is now 51 points behind Dungey. That is two full races, plus 1 point. Jason Anderson is 71 points out of the lead (which is two points closer than he was before Daytona). But that is still two full races, plus 21 points behind Dungey. Every other rider is at least three races back. Here is a quick rundown.

THREE OR MORE RACES BEHIND (MORE THAN 75 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)
Davi Millsaps
— three races and 18 point.
Chad Reed — three races and 23 points.

FOUR OR MORE RACES BEHIND (MORE THAN 100 POINTS OUT OF THE LEAD)
Blake Baggett — four races and 1 point.
Dean Wilson — four races and 9 points.
Broc Tickle — four races and 11 points.
Josh Grant — four races and 1 point.
Justin Brayton — four races and 10 points.
Cooper Webb— five races and 18 points.

1974cyclenewsjodyIn the 1970’s every rock-and-roller dreamed of being on the cover of “Rolling Stone.” For motocross racers of the 1970’s it was to make the cover of “Cycle News.” Jody Weisel and his Super Combat (not to mention his dog) made it in 1974.
