MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: IT IS THE MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS…NOT “OF NATIONS”
• WHY SAYING “MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS” IS IMPORTANT!
When Giuseppe Luongo changed the name of the “Motocross des Nations” to the “Motocross of Nations,” he did it to erase the French name from the event that had been held since 1947. Why? Because the “des” was making the event less marketable to potential English speaking corporate sponsors. And big money racing is all about marketing. Nobody begrudges a company for sponsoring a race and having their name at the top of the poster, but changing the “Motocross des Nations” to “Motocross of Nations” was more than adding Red Bull or Monster to the name—it was an attempt to anglicize one of the sport’s oldest and most important events.
Go ahead and call it the Motocross of Nations or MXON if you want—especially if you aren’t old enough to understand the importance of the history of our sport, but the four guys in the photo above (David Bailey, Johnny O’Mara, Danny ‘Magoo’ Chandler and Jim Gibson) will always call it the “Motocross des Nations” or MXDN. Saying “des” means you appreciate the sport’s roots.
• WANT TO REPRESENT YOUR COUNTRY AT THE WORLD VET? SIGN UP FOR THE WORLD CUP OF NATIONS
The World Cup trophy will be awarded to the winning nation and will have your name and country engraved on it. The trophy will be displayed at the Glen Helen Museum throughout the entire year and each rider on the winning team will receive a commemorative medallion.
Press release: Applications for the Dubya World Vet MX Cup of Nations must be submitted before the October 1, 2022 deadline! We can’t wait to see who will be crowned this year’s World Vet MX Cup of Nations champion. The race will be ran in conjunction with the 38th Annual Dubya World Vet MX Championships on November 5th and 6th.
Each participating country entered in the Dubya World Vet MX Cup of Nations is allowed three different teams – each team must consist of three riders from the home country: one rider must be over-30, one over 40, and one over 50 years old (the three riders can be of any skill level). Riders will receive race bibs to represent their country and colors to indicate their age group. Moto 1 will be held on Saturday and moto 2 will race on Sunday. The scoring will be based on all three riders over both motos with the lowest score of the two-moto format determining the winning team and country. The entry fee is $100 per team.

• HOW MANY POINTS DOES IT TAKE TO WIN THE 450 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Ricky Carmichael had two perfect seasons, which means not just winning every 450 race, but also every moto. He also came within 6 points of scoring 600 points a third time, but came up 6 points short.
The actual answer is one point more than the guy in second place, but there is a mathematical anwser. If you wanted to win the 2023 AMA 450 National Motocross Championship, how many points would be the average number that the 25 AMA Champs before you had. The answer is that since 1997 it has taken an average of 530 points to clinch the crown. However, there have been three perfect seasons in AMA Motocross history; Ricky Carmichael had two perfect seasons by earning the maximum 600 points in 2002 and 2004 (and missed a third perfect season in 2005 when he came up 6 points short). James Stewart had a perfect season in 2008.
Zach Osborne won the 202 AMA 450 National Championship with the least point ever, but it was also during the pandemic year and had only nine races instead of 12.
Zach Osborne won the 450 title with the least points ever in 2020 when he only score 355 points—although there were only nine races that year and Zach won four of the nine (a perfect season in the pandemic-plagued 2020 450 series would have been only 450 points).
Of Eli Tomac’s four 450 National titles, the 2022 series was won with his most points ever at 546 points. His other three titles came with 470 points, 523 points and 463 points.
With the average number of points needed to be the 450 National Champion is currently set at 530. points, how many of the last 25 AMA 450 National Champions scored less than 530 points? Ten of the 25 AMA 250/450 Champions earned less than 530 points. They were Doug Henry (1998), Greg Albertyn (1999), Ricky Carmichael (2001 & 2003), Grant Langston (2007), Chad Reed (2009), Ryan Villopoto (2011), Eli Tomac (2027 & 2018) and Zach Osborne (2020).

• THE REMAINING RACES OF THE 2022 SEASON
The 2022 World Vet Motocross Championship is shaping up to be a barn burner, as lots of former motocross stars from different decades are lining up to win the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50, Over-60 and Over-70 titles. Believe it or not, multi-time AMA 250 National Champion Gary Jones is now 70-years-old. He is the only rider to have won World Vet crowns in the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50 and Over-60 classes. If he can win the Over-70 title in 2022, he will have a Grand Slam in most of the important age groups. But Gary won’t be perfect because 1970s GP star Lars Larsson is the reigning Over-80 World Vet Champion and Gary Jones has to wait ten years before he’s old enough to get the clean sweep he wants.
