MXA WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: CELEBRATING MAHINDRA, THE KNOX BOX, JAWA & BILLY MUSGRAVE

THE FOUNDER OF ENDUROCROSS & THE KICKER ARENACROSS GUY VOW TO START A NEW ENDUROCROSS SERIES

Josh Fout racing the 2018 Endurocros series.

Press Release: In an effort to ensure the future of indoor off-road motorcycle racing, Tod Hammock, the Kicker Arenacross event promoter, and Eric Peronnard, the creator of EnduroCross, look to study all possibilities to keep Indoor extreme off-road racing alive.

Hammock has been promoting Arenacross races across the United States since 1995, totaling over 300 successful events. His most recent achievements include launching a national television partnership with Fox Sports for the 2019 National Arenacross Series. His relationship with top indoor venues across the country, expansive knowledge of the sport of off-road racing (he is an avid rider as well) and proven success of the promotion of these events makes him the ideal candidate to continue building on previous successes that indoor extreme offroad racing requires.

In 2004, Eric Peronnard brought the first ever EnduroCross to life. His resume is full of experience working in the Motocross, Supercross and the X Games worldwide. His knowledge and passion for off road racing/riding is unparalleled. Hammock and Peronnard are the ideal team to successfully keep indoor extreme off road racing alive in the short term and grow it in the long term. Their experience and proven track record will provide a seamless transition and prove to be an invaluable partnership for the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). Key people such as Shane Schaeffer (renowned track builder), Mike Hathaway (longtime EnduroCross Race Director) and Sean Finley (media relations and marketing) will be part of the new team. Preparations for a three race series for 2019 are already in the works with plans for a full series in 2020 and expansion of the number of races in future.

BIKES YOU NEVER SEEN BEFORE: 1981 VILLA 125MXA

The Italian-built 1981 Villa 125MXA was Villa’s first water-cooled, reed-valved, six speed, 125 motocross bike. As was the fashion of 1981, the radiator was mounted on the triple clamps. The twin shocks were remote reservoir Corte Cossa units and compared to the 1980 Villa, they were longer and laid-down at a steeper angle. The hubs were from Grimeca, The carb was a 38mm Bing. The forks were Marzocchi Patlz D units. And the color was called Lobster. In 1981 Villa also made a 250MXA and a 480CR.

WHO WE RAN INTO AT THE PALA NATIONAL

Jeff Ward, Gary Denton and Mike Beier.

The best thing about a SoCal National is the people you run into in the pits. Jon Ortner grabbed his Sony camera and took a walk through the pits. See who he saw below.

The Noren family — Fredrik, Amy and new daughter Jolie.

The Shoemaker family — Broc, Allison and a yet to be delivered daughter.

We love the happy Ryan Villopoto — he’s enjoying life and motocross now.

Erik Kehoe got recalled to manage the Honda team after a few years on the sidelines and it looks like things are looking up with a healthy Ken Roczen.

Talk about things looking up! Mitch Payton’s riders have won 63% of the 2019 AMA 250 Pro races. Forkner and Cianciarulo  won 10 AMA 250 East/West races and Adam Cianciarulo has won both 250 Nationals so far.

KTM Media head David O’Connor didn’t have anything to do for the KTM factory team at Pala, so they made him the official greeter at their tent.

Scott Burnworth.

FCP’s Kristoffer Palm was born in the same Swedish town as 1970’s Grand Prix racer Uno Palm, but had never heard of him until he came to the USA. Kris runs FCP which makes titanium head stays.
Rick “Ziggy’ Zielfelder has a moment of revelation at the Geico Honda pits.

It’s always fun to run into Moose’s Dan Fitch at the races.

Maxima’s Ron Lechien loves the smell of oil in the morning —especially two-stroke oil.

Averee Dubach, Doug Dubach, Yamaha’s Mitsuyuki Satou and Carter Dubach.

Husqvarna’s Andy Jefferson and Knobby Shop’s Dennis Stapleton, Sr. have unique approaches to having a camera thrust in their faces

Bill and Carrie Keefe came to root for the Troy Lee KTM riders, who needed all the support they could get. Their son Tyler is the TLD team manager and Carrie’s brother is “the real Troy Lee.” Bill was an MXA test rider back in the Saddleback days

John Tomac is one of the easiest guys to spot in the pits.

1982 AMA Supercross and 250 National Champion Donnie Hansen.

CARS BY MOTOCROSS COMPANIES: THE 1937 JAWA MINOR

The 1937Jawa Minor was powered by a 600cc twin-cylinder, two-stroke engine mounted longitudinally behind the front axle. The Second World War curtailed Jawa’s automobile hopes; but in the 1960s, Jawa made several two-stroke powered small cars for its domestic market. However, serial production never happened, the idea ended only with only several functional prototypes made. Most Americans know about Jawa from their speedway bikes, the 350 California twin, their success in the ISDT and for the 1964-1966 Banana frame Jawa motocross bikes. The Czech company was started in 1929. Under communist rule after WWII, Jawa absorbed both ESO Motorycles and CZ under one umbrella company. But none of the three brands could stay competitive and faded from the American scene. The 2019 Jawa has a 293cc  displacement with a 76mm bore by 65mm stroke producing 27 horsepower from a single-cylinder engine with twin exhaust pipes.

Today, Jawa is back and according to reports selling very well—although not with ISDT or motocross bikes, but instead with Indian-built, Mahindra-financed, retro-machines for the Indian domestic street market. Mahindra owns the rights to the Jawa and BSA names in India and with Mahindra’s help (especially in the engine department where the new Jawa engine is based on the old Mahindra Mojo engine).Jawa India hired a Milan, Italy, design house to work on the overall look of the 2019 Jawa. However, look below and you will see a 1962 Jawa Type 353 that bears a striking resemblance to the 57-year newer model.

Ampelio Macchi, a former Cagiva and Husqvarna engineer, who is the man behind the resurrection of the SWM brand, was hired to update the Mahindra engine to focus on reliability and midrange performance.

1962 Jawa Type 353 two-stroke.

Although Jawa India claims that a Milan Design house did the look of the bike, we think they just Xerox’ed a 1962 Jawa and went to lunch. We forgive them because it is marketed as a “retro classic.” The Jawa line is built in a former Honda factory in Pithampur that is now run by Mahindra. These bike will not be coming to America.

CLASSIC MXA TEST RIDER PHOTO: MXA’S 125 TWO-STROKE SPECIALIST BILLY MUSGRAVE

Billy Musgrave tapped out on the back straight on a 2011 KTM 125SX.

Billy Musgrave had no choice but to become an MXA test riders at a young age. His dad, Willy Musgrave, was an MXA test rider when Billy was born — and as Billy grew he quickly became a minicycle test rider and eventually began testing big bikes. But, Billy didn’t like four-strokes and even after turning Pro Billy insisted on racing a 125 two-stroke against the rising tide of 250cc four-strokes. And Billy held his own against the four-strokes, winning his fair share of races—and he finished fourth in the 2012 World Two-Stroke Championship.

Billy Musgrave is now a successful professional kart racer, and he’s still tapped out on the back straight.

By this time, his dad had started racing shifter karts and bought Billy a new Arrow kart. After breaking his femur in a kart crash, Billy returned to motocross for a short time, but decided to become a professional Kart racer. It didn’t take long for Billy to storm to the front of the karting world. He is now a three-time SKUSA SuperNats Champion, with a factory ride, big name sponsors and a new career. As for Willy Musgrave, who worked in the motorcycle industry his whole life, he started Musgrave Racing Company (MRC) in 2013 to build high-tech karts, hop-up engines and run a big race team. For more info about karting or MRC’s “Arrive and Drive” program go to www.musgraveracing.com

MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK: IN THE GIGGLE WEEDS

While the yellow marker is suppose to be the outside limit of the race track, it doesn’t scare the riders enough to keep them from crossing it—as Zach Osborne demonstrates. However, a solid white fence and a giant fan screaming at you does the job. Photo: Jon Ortner
