MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: MAY OLD ACQUAINTANCES BE FORGOT…ALONG WITH BAD RESULTS

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 2020-1/2 KTM 450SXF FACTORY EDITION AND THE EUROPEAN “CAIROLI” VERSION?

The American Factory Edition.

The European Factory Edition.

It was first noticed that the European version of the 2020-1/2 KTM 450SXF did not come with the optional vented airbox cover or the Akrapovic muffler that the American bikes have — which led us to compiled a list of how the American and European versions differ.

TRAVIS PASTRANA LEAVES SUZUKI & MOVES TO KTM

Travis seems to be fully equipped with KTM two-strokes already.

Travis Pastrana went on Instagram to announce that he will be riding KTMs instead of Suzukis in the future. It was always assumed that Travis would stick with Suzuki for as long as he rode, but times change and since his former Suzuki team manager, Roger DeCoster, now the KTM head man, suggested that Travis switch to KTM two-strokes (since Suzuki hasn’t made a new smoker since 2008), Travis tested a KTM and decided to make the switch. Travis insists that he didn’t make the switch for money.

THE 400 MILLIONTH HONDA ROLLS DOWN THE ASSEMBLY LINE

In 1949 Honda released its first major motorcycle model, the Dream D-Type.

Since the introduction of the Dream D-Type in 1949, Honda’s 70th anniversary of motorcycle mass-production marks the company’s 400 million-unit milestone for global motorcycle production. Honda was founded in 1948 and began mass-production of motorcycles at its first overseas production facility in Belgium in 1963. Since then, Honda has expanded its production globally in accordance with its fundamental principle of producing locally where there is demand. Honda currently produces a wide range of motorcycles, from 50cc commuters to 1800cc models, at 35 facilities in 21 countries.

In 1958 Honda introduced the first Super Cub, the Super Cub C100. This is the 2020 model.

Honda achieved its 100 million-unit milestone in 1997, and its 300 million-unit milestone in 2014. In 2018, Honda exceeded an annual production of 20 million yearly units for the first time in its history. Takahiro Hachigo, Honda Chief Executive Officer, said, “For 70 years, Honda has provided to customers worldwide motorcycles that make life easier and enjoyable. As a result, we have achieved our 400 million-unit milestone. I am grateful to all of our customers, and everyone involved in development, manufacturing, sales and service of our products. We will continue to do our best to provide attractive products that meet the needs and dreams of our customers worldwide.”

AMA SUPERMOTO SETS OUT TO REVAMP U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

AMA Supermoto is trying to hit the ground running in 2020 with a another new plan for the U.S. Supermoto Championship series. Owner Alex Mock will be joined in 2020 by motorcycle industry veterans Darryl Atkins and Frankie Garcia. Mock said, “When I first set out to run the series it was a big responsibility and I didn’t have a massive team behind me and just kind of went with it. I have a passion for this series and want to see it grow back into what it once was with support from sponsors and manufacturers. I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so I set out to find the right industry experts that were involved firsthand back in Supermoto’s hey-day. We understand we’re a little bit late to the game heading into 2020, but I know we have a strong and passionate team that can get it done.”

Darryl Atkins will be responsible for the addition of new series’ partners and advertising. Darryl said, “It’s great to see the sport of Supermoto is coming back in a strong way. I’m excited to be a part of it and to be working with others who have a big passion for Supermoto. We are working on some exciting things for the future as the sport has so much potential. We look forward to be getting the support from the industry as having a healthy Supermoto series only benefits everyone.”

AMA Supermoto is currently in the works of not only finalizing a 2020 Championship schedule but also an equally important live stream video package that will include live racing from every stop of the series, behind the scenes pit reporting and sponsorship ad opportunities.

The Over-50 pack

Famous moto-photographer Debbi Tamietti goes to every REM race at Glen Helen to be with her former CMC Number One  husband Val Tamietti. BIKES YOU WISH YOU HAD RIDDEN: A 75 HORSEPOWER, METHANOL-FUELED JAWA SPEEDWAY BIKE

speedewaydarylMXA’s Daryl  adapted fairly quickly to the Jawa Speedway bike — by forgetting everything he knew about riding a  motocross bike.

The MXA wrecking crew loves bikes — all kinds of bikes — and we have tested and raced lots of different types of dirt machines. We have tested dirt trackers, snowmobiles, sidecars, pogo sticks, GNCC bikes, endurocross bikes, electric bikes, snow bike. Paris-Dakar bikes, ice racers and road racers between our day job testing motocross bikes. Yes, we know, it isn’t motocross — and that’s what we like about it. It gives us a chance to see how the other half lives and to have fun doing it.

speedwayenginefixedThe 500cc, four-stroke, single-speed Jawa engine can accelerate from zero to 60 in three seconds, but in our hands it tried to hit the wall in 2.5 seconds. All Speedway bikes run on methanol and the gas tanks only hold enough fuel to go eight laps — about two minutes.

MXA’S HANDY-DANDY PRE-MIX RATIO CHART BY GALLON & RATIO

This easy-to-use chart tells you how much oil to pour into 1 , 2,  2.5, 3, 4 or 5 gallons of gas to get the proper oil-to-gas ratio you are looking for. MXA typically runs Maxima K2 at 40:1 —which would be 16 ounces of oil to 5 gallons of gas. If we didn’t need 5 gallons, but only wanted 1 gallon of premix, we would a 3.20 ounces to 1 gallon of gas. All you have to do is pick your favorite premix ratio and follow the chart to how many gallons  you want.

MXA WRECKING CREW CRF450 TECHNICAL PATCH

Are you confused by the buttons on your 2020 Honda CRF450? So were the MXA test riders. It became necessary to tape a crib sheet to the Honda’s crossbar pad to explain how all the buttons worked.
