• FIVE-YEAR SNAPSHOT: THE 450 CLASS AFTER FOUR ROUNDS FROM 2018 TO 2022

Weston PeickWeston Peick was robbed of his best years when he suffered a career ending injury in an off-season Supercross.

We like to think that every new year represents the most “stacked field ever” or the “Perfect Storm,” but even a casual browsing of who-was-who over the last five 450 National Championship campaigns, proves that AMA Professional motocross changes at a glacial rate. There are always injured riders who are missing from any given year and, in 2022, in particular, that list includes Dylan Ferrandis, Cooper Webb, Adam Cianciarulo, Malcolm Stewart and Dean Wilson (some of them may be back soon and others, yet uninjured, will join them).

But the true-to-life missing riders from the top ten from 2018 to 2022, it not a big list. It includes Marvin Musquin, who got a “gimme” 2022 450 Supercross ride from KTM as a courtesy for his 10-years on the team—even though his contract had expired. Marvin didn’t get or didn’t want any offers for the 2022 outdoor series. Zach Osborne suffered a back injury after winning the 2020 450 Championship and decided to retire, changed his mind and then decided to retire again—he is now Husqvarna’s Brand Ambassador. Broc Tickle quit, but took a job as Kawasaki’s test rider—and still looks like he’d be willing to come back if needed. Blake Baggett virtually disappeared from the Rocky Mountain KTM team, sold his Florida compound and moved back to SoCal. Australian Dean Ferris made the top ten in 2019 and went home to race. Weston Peick last made the top ten in 2018, but suffered a head injury at a winter Supercross in Europe and although he did return riding for fun, he never raced again. Weston moved to Boise and works for WPS. Justin Bogle started the 2022 AMA 450 National series and then took an abrupt leave of absence after a couple poor Nationals—no word on if he’ll be back for 2023.

Dylan FerranidsAt 28 years old, Dylan Ferrandis is one of the younger top-flite riders in the 450 Nationals—but he got injured three days before the 2022 450 Nationals started. He could be back before the 450 Nationals are over.

What about all of those new young kids who everyone says are moving up to challenge the established 450 stars? There aren’t really very many of them. Chase Sexton and Garrett Marchbanks are the only ones that come to mind, but Chase was 5th overall in the 2020 and 2021 450 Nationals—so he is in his third year in the big bike class. You might think that Christian Craig is new to the 450 class, but Christian raced the 450 Nationals in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018 and was sixth overall in the 2020 and 2021 450 National Championships (which is the place he currently holds in the 2022 450 Nationals after four rounds). Of course, we have high hopes for the Lawrence brothers to move up, but Honda could keep both of them (or one of them) in the 250 class through 2024. Justin Cooper and Michael Mosiman look like they have the strength and speed to successfully step up to the 450s—especially given the success for Maxime Renaux in Europe (before he got hurt).

Chase Sexton is the youngest front line rider in the 2022 450 Nationals. Not only is he only 22 years old, but he’s leading the 450 points chase.

We know that change and new blood will eventually come, but we have been saying that for quite awhile. That is like a weathercaster saying, “Today’s forecast for Palm Springs is 101 degrees.” That could run on a loop for almost every day from May to November. Modern motocross stars don’t quit—they just keep going and going. World Vet Championships aged riders like Fredrik Noren (30), Marvin Musquin (32), Justin Barcia (30), Vince Friese (31), Alex Martin (32), Broc Tickle (31), Dean Wilson (31), Jason Anderson (30), Christian Craig (31) and Ryan Dungey (32) are barely offset by youngsters like Eli Tomac (29), Malcolm Stewart (29), Dylan Ferrandis (28), Max Anstie (29), Jeremy Martin (29), Joey Savatgy (28), Ken Roczen (28), Shane McElrath (27), Cooper Webb (27) and Aaron Plessinger (26).

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: PRO CIRCUIT KAWASAKI KX250/450 LINKAGE SYSTEM

“The stock OEM shock linkage on the newer KX models tends to be stiffer at the beginning of the stroke and softer at the end of the stroke. With Pro Circuit’s new KX250/450 linkage system, it’s the complete opposite. The stroke is plusher at the beginning and stiffer at the end. This lessens the need for stiffer high-speed valving. One note, an increase in spring rate is required. Usually a 0.2 kg/mm rate increase is recommended.” —Pro Circuit’s Camilla Consonni. $445.00—www.procircuit.com or (951) 738-8050.

•MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE 1982 WRANGLER SUPERCROSS SERIES

The AMA Supercross series has been sponsored by a wide range of outside corporations, but none were as good for the sport as Wrangler Jeans. Not only did they sponsors a points fund for the riders, but they came up with the short-lived blue plate for the number one rider. When Wrangler stopped being the series sponsor the idea of combining points from Supercross and Nationals died. Not because it wasn’t a great idea, but because the AMA couldn’t make a buck off of it.
