GODSPEED! DEWAYNE JONES (1950-2016)

dewayneejones.dwayneDewayne Jones had factory rides with Yamaha, Honda and Can-Am. He finished 5th at the Daytona Supercross in 1973 and 2nd at the 1973 Lake Whitney 250 Nationals (and stood next to his brother Gary Jones on the podium that day).

Dewayne Jones was a member of the famous Jones Gang of 1970’s AMA motocross. Dewayne, along with his four-time 250 National Champion brother Gary and Yamaha, Honda and Can-Am team manager father Don, raced as the most unified team in the sport’s history. And on June 17, 1973, at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch became the first brothers to go one-two at an AMA National when they put their CR250 Hondas on the podium.

Dewayne never won an AMA National, but he made the top ten in the 250 class six times in 1973: Daytona, Florida; Opelousas, Louisiana; Amelia Earhardt, Florida; Road Atlanta, Georgia; Cycle Trails, Ohio; and Lake Whitney, Texas. Dewayne even scored a top ten in his one and only 125 National at Hangtown in 1974 on a Can-Am. Dewayne retired after the 1974 season, but kept racing dirt track and Supermoto in his later years. Dewayne succumbed to cancer at the age of 65.

A BUNCH OF 2017 HONDAS, BUT NOT THE CRF450

2017 Honda Grom

GROM
Part minibike, all motorcycle, the Grom has been a resounding success from the start, with a package that’s manageable yet comfortable for full-sized adults. Though its wheels are only 12 inches, the bike has full-size features like a sturdy steel frame, a 31mm inverted fork, mono-shock rear suspension, hydraulic disc brakes and a 125cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine. Now the Grom gets an edgier look, thanks to an integrated fuel tank and side panels, along with a modern, stacked LED headlight layout. Add a new flip-key, sportier handlebar, under-slung exhaust, upswept tail unit and a higher passenger seat, and you’ve got a Grom that’s as fun as ever but with a daring new look. Colors: Matte Gray Metallic, Pearl Red, Pearl White, Bright Yellow. Price: $3199. Availability: August 2016

17_Honda_CRF230F_red

CRF230F
Lightweight and reliable, the CRF230F is the ideal off-road motorcycle for young adults or larger teens looking to spend more time twisting the throttle and less time spinning the wrenches. Thanks to its user-friendly, air-cooled 223cc four-stroke engine, durable six-speed transmission and plush, long-travel suspension, this motorcycle can be enjoyed by a wide range of riders in a variety of off-road environments. Easy-to-use push-button start, heavy-duty clutch, front disc brake and a tough skid plate provide performance and durability on the trail. Maintenance-free CD ignition, sealed battery and cam-type chain adjusters are a few of the many features that help to keep maintenance simple and rare. Color: Red. Price: $4199.
Availability: August 2016.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO MXA AND MAKE MONEY

MXAJULYCOVER2016The July 2016 issue of MXA will be out this coming week. Will it be hand delivered to your humble abode by a uniformed agent of the U.S. Government or will you sit around and wait for its content to appear on the internet in a month or two? We’d subscribe—especially since it won’t cost you any money when you get a $25 gift certificate from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC for subscribing.

Do you subscribe to MXA? You should. We know that you think that print magazines are dead and that the internet will fill the void, but most of the stuff in the current issue of MXA won’t appear on the web for several months, if at all. Luckily, you can get all of MXA on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle or Android by going to the Apple Store, Amazon or Google Play. Better yet get the Digital desktop version at https://hi-torque.com/product/motocross-action-digital-edition/ for $9.99 a year. The MXA test riders prefer the print version and not just because it is delivered by a uniformed employee of the U.S. Government, but because for only $19.99 you get 12 issues and a free $25 Gift Card from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. That means that there is a profit to be made in this deal for you. For the Print magazine go to: http://hi-torque.com/product/subscribe-to-motocross-action-magazine/

THEY WAY WE WERE: THE WAY WE WORE IN ’82

Sinisalo1982Sinsalo wouldn’t be the first name you would think of to name a product, unless your last name just happened to be Sinisalo. The gear was great and had a big following in America with Vet riders, but in the end it went back to Finland.
