THE PERFECT SEASON BLATHER IS ALL OVER NOW

elitomacgh2017DTEli Tomac’s perfect season lasted one week. Zach Osborne’s made it two weeks.

A perfect season is an amazing feat for any athlete. To win every race over a four month span is something that is rarely achieved in our sport. Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart both achieved it. The weekly drama of “will he or won’t he” keeps the fans excited as the string of wins begins to grow. Starting with the first race the tension is there—not just for the riders and the teams, but for the fans as well. Surprisingly, apart from an admiration for the dominance of one man over 39 others, a large number of fans root for the win streak to be broken.  The scenario goes like this:

First week: “Johnny Gofast won by one minute at round one, it looks like he’s going to win every round.”

Third week: “Johnny has been untouchable and already has six moto wins and three straight victories. He’s holeshot every moto and has never been passed.”

Sixth week: “Isn’t there anyone who can race with Johnny Gofast. Every race is a cakewalk. Johnny gets the holeshot and the fans head for the concessions booth.”

Eighth week: “I used to like that guy, but every since he started winning he sounds like a blowhard. I hope somebody waxes him this week. I’m tired of his canned speeches and smirks on the podium.”

Tenth week: “I hope Johnny Gofast falls down in the first turn so that we get to see some racing this weekend. It has been the most boring series I’ve every watched.”

Twelfth week: “I told you he was going to have a perfect season. I love that guy. He was my pick from the very beginning. I had him in my fantasy game and I have his poster on my wall.”

So, at Glen Helen, Eli Tomac’s perfect season went down the drain. The second moto brake failure may have cost him any chance at the overall, but by that time Marvin Musquin had cracked Eli’s chance at a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 season. Then, in Colorado, Eli fell in the first moto and got beat straight up by Blake Bagget in the second moto. Baggett won and Tomac finished fifth.

zacho2017ghdebbiAs for Zach Osborne, he squeaked out an overall win at Glen Helen after dominating in Hangtown, but in Colorado, he was fifth overall with a 8-5 day.

TOM WHITE’S SPECIAL SURPRISE PARTY: DOWN, BUT NOT OUT

In many ways Tom White has spent his life honoring others. He founded the Edison Dye Lifetime Achievement Award, initiated the Glen Helen Walk of Fame (where great riders are remembered), was the head of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame motocross committee, opened his 170-bike Early Years of Motocross Museum to charities (and the public) to keep old bikes alive, worked tirelessly as an race announcer at everything of the USGP to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days to the Glen Helen National, volunteered his time for every good cause that ask him to speak and Tom donated generously to charities. And that doesn’t touch on the his racing and business life. Tom was an AMA Grand National Dirt track (racing against the likes of Kenny Roberts and Mert Lawwill), he owned the White Brothers Cycle Specialties, was a hardcore motocross racer (who won the Over-40 World Championship in 1990), he was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 2012 for his tireless work on behalf of the sport and in his spare time Tom works for MXA as its vintage editor. He is a busy man. He is non-strop all the time.

How do you honor a man who has handed out so many honors. Well, first you trick him into showing up by telling him that you want him to come to an event to honor someone else—in this case Malcolm Smith. Then, when he gets there, you spring a Todd Huffman-produced film on Tom White’s life on him and take him outside to see the unveiling of a special new attraction on the Glen Helen Walk of Fame. Next, you have a virtual who’s who of motocross in the audience to congratulate him—along with his complete family (from wife Dani down to the grand kids) standing by his side. Best of all—it came as a complete surprise. Even though hundreds of people knew about the “Tom White surprise,” not a single one of them spilled the beans to Tom. He was totally shocked. Its no small feat in the motorcycle world to keep of a secret from someone at the same time that you are inviting people to his celebration. But, this time it happened.
