SUPERCROSS TV SCHEDULE: THE FAT LADY WILL SING ON SUNDAY, JUNE 21

This will be the last track of the 2020 Supercross season. After 7 races in the same stadium, there have been terrible tracks, perfect tracks and one mud race. Let’s hope the last track delivers races that are worthy of the men racing on it.

It’s almost over. It looked like it would never happen, but it did. Now the 2020 AMA Supercross Championship will come to an end on  Sunday, June 21, at a surprising 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time), which is 12:00 noon (Pacific Time). It will also show on the NBC network channel later in the day. The 7 races were unusual, unique and the racing was spectacular.  Sunday’s finale will end months of doubt .

2020 COLOGNE MOTORCYCLE SHOW CANCELED — WHAT ABOUT MILAN?

The annual and bi-annual European motorcycles shows are where the manufacturers and aftermarket companies show their wares.

The 2020 Cologne Intermot motorcycle show was scheduled for October 6-11, 2020, but it has been canceled. Since major motorcycle shows in Europe draw tens of thousands of attendees, the close spatial proximity and the shared experience of a trade in the year of Covid 19, the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM) have decided not to hold the show in 2020.

The cancellation should not come as as a surprise as BMW and KTM had announced their withdrawals from the Cologne and Milan Shows back in April. The two biggest motorcycle shows are Intermot in Cologne, Germany, which takes place every other year, and the Milan EICMA show which take place annually. While Intermot was scheduled for October 6 -11, this year’s Milan show doesn’t take place until November 3-8.  As it stands, there has been no confirmation as to whether the Milan event will go ahead sincer Italy was hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 crisis. On a side note, the British Motorcycle Live show, which traditionally takes place after the EICMA show in Milan canceled their November event. As it stands, EICMA is still scheduled to take place in November.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE JULY 2020 ISSUE OF MXA? TWO-STROKES FROM MILD TO WILD, BIG TO SMALL, EXOTIC TO STOCK

WHAT THE MXA WRECKING CREW IS UP TO OUTSIDE OF SLC?

Back in 1995, Jody ask Troy Lee to paint all of MXA’s helmet orange. From 1995 to now MXA test riders have always worn orange helmets. Jody Weisel (192) and Dan Alamangos (64) glow orange at a Glen Helen test day last  Saturday.

The bad news for the MXA editors is that someone had to go to Salt Lake City to cover the 7-race hurry-up Supercross series, take the coronavirus test and stay there for a couple weeks. Managing editor Daryl Ecklund agreed to go to SLC, but we couldn’t afford to have him gone the  whole time. The solution was to let Daryl come home after three races and fly Travis Fant into to cover the final four. This split the duties and between them. They have done a great job job of covering the pre-race, race-race and post-race festivities.

Jon Ortner flies MXA’s 2020 YZ250F for a Rekluse clutch test. It is normal for test riders to switch back and forth between different bikes on a test day.

What was the rest of the MXA gang doing while Salt Lake City was going on? We were enjoying  riding, testing and playing on our motorcycles. Racing has just started back up in SoCal, but even better than that is that most of the tracks have been opened up for practice. In fact, Glen Helen is now open on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for practice (when the tracks are not  being used for races). Track prep has been very good and with all the fast guys out of town, you don’t have to worry about being run-down from behind.

Brian Medeiros gets a  bird’s eye view of what Glen Helen looks like on a Saturday practice day. Brian is on  MXA’s 2020 Yamaha YZ450F.

Former Pro Circuit Husqvarna rider Mike Monaghan never gave up on racing two-strokes. On Saturday he played around on MXA’s 2020 KTM 125SX.

Marc Crosby was one of four test rider who rode the FC450 Rockstar Editionand 2020 FX450 back-to-back.

Josh Fout switched back and forth between the Husky FC450 Rockstar Edition and 2020 Husky FX450 cross-country bike. We even swapped black boxes between the two.

2020 Husqvarna FX450Josh Mosiman had to be talked into riding the 2020 Husqvarna FX450 and then he wouldn’t get off it.

Val Tamietti (31) owns a new KTM 350SXF to race with, but he always practices on his YZ250 two-stroke.

Braden O’Neal  came out to try MXA’s Ultimate KTM 300SX project bike.

If you leave your bike unattended in the pits, odds are the Randy Skinner will take it for a few laps.
When the riding is done the work begins.

CHAD REED AT FLYING IRONHORSE RACEWAY IN UTAH: NO TALK, NO MUSIC, JUST SKIPPY AND HIS KATOOM

FIRST LOOK! 2021 HONDA CRF250

2021 CRF250R

The only 2021 motocross machine released at this point in the model year, the CRF250R offers strong power across the rev range and a low-center-of-gravity chassis layout that delivers nimble, stable handling. In truth the 2021 Honda CRF250 is the the 2020 CRF250 with no changes. But, apart from a weak low-end throttle response  on the exit of corners, the 2020 CRF250 was a big step up for Honda’s 250 four-stroke products. The 2020 got a lot of changes, which carry over to the 2021—here is the completely list.

(1) Cam profile. An updated cam profile delays the opening of the exhaust valves and reduces valve overlap.
(2) Ignition timing. The timing at 8000 rpm has been updated.
(3) Sensor. A gear position sensor has been added to allow different ignition maps for each of the five gears.
(4) Head pipe. The resonator on the right header has been removed, and the head pipe circumference has been reduced.

(5) Muffler. The perf-core of the muffler flows better thanks to larger perforation holes.
(6) Radiator. The left-side radiator has been made wider at the top to expand its volume by 5 percent.
(7) Transmission. Second gear has been made taller (going from a 1.80 to 1.75 ratio). Second and third gear have been WPC treated.

(8) Clutch. The clutch plates are thicker, oil capacity has been upped by 18 percent, and the clutch springs are stiffer.
(9) Frame. The frame was upgraded to the CRF450 frame. The frame’s lateral stiffness, torsional stiffness and yaw angle have been were changes in 2020.

(10) Footpegs. The footpegs have fewer teeth but are sharper. Two of the footpeg cross-braces have been removed.
(11) Battery. As on the 2020 CRF450, the battery was lowered 28mm in order to get more air flow into the airbox and lower the center of gravity.

(12) Suspension. The Showa forks have increased low-speed damping, while the shock has increased low-speed compression and reduced high-speed compression.
(13) Rear brake. The rear brake pads are now made from the ATV pad material. The brake hose has been shortened, and the pedal has been lengthened. The CRF250’s brake rear guard has been minimized to allow more air to cool the rotor.

(14) Piston. The bridged-box piston design features a reinforcing structure between the skirts and the wrist-pin bosses.

2021 retail price.  $7999.

OLD FRIENDS TAKE AN HONORARY LAP FOR MARTY SMITH AT CALVMX VINTAGE RACE

Scott Burnworth (8) lines up at the head of the parade lap.

Many of Marty Smith’s old friends came out to the recently reopened Lake Elsinore motocross track to pay their respects to Marty, who was tragically killed, along with his wife Nancy, in a dune buggy accident last month. On hand were many past legends who came to  ride a honorary lap for Marty and his wife Nancy. On hand and ready to ride were Tommy Croft, Lars Larsson, Scott Burnworth, Donnie Hansen, Rich Truchinski, Mike Tripes, Gary Chaplin and many more. Here are a few photos by Chuck Connolly.

Although vintage motocross bikes were the order of the day, the riders came to ride a lap for Marty on all manner of bikes.

Nancy Smith was well represented by the wives of the vintage riders standing next to a red-stripe Honda CR125.

Lars Larsson (17), the first European GP rider to come to America full-time, chose a unique ensemble for his lap.

Gary Chaplin (21) did Lars one better, by wearing a vintage open-face helmet and long pants.

HOW SUNDAY’S 250 EAST/WEST SHOWDOWN WILL WORK

There will be a 250 East heat race and a 250 West heat race, both featuring the top 20 in points. The top 9 in each heat will advance to the combined East/West finale. Places 10 through 20 in the heats will go to a combined East/West Last Chance—in which the top 4 will transfer to the main. It could be four 250 West riders, four 250 East riders or a combination of the two coast.

The 250 East/West race will pay points to the 250 East and 250 West Championships. But, the East and West riders will not be scored separately. If the first 250 East rider is fifth, he won’t get first place points for being the fastest East rider—he will get fifth place points. This format means that here will be a bigger chance for riders to gain a lot of points on their prime competitors, if they can get several riders from the opposite coast between them on the track.
