BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: 1968 FLINK 250X

The 1968 Flink 250X is very rare. Less than 20 were made and only six are accounted for today. Photos: Lindstrom-MX

In 1955 when Husqvarna released their 175cc Silverpilen, Gustav Flink started making parts to turn the little Swedish street bike into a motocross machine. He machined special full-circle cranks, high-compression cylinder heads, manifolds to accept Bing, Amal or Dellorto carbs and, eventually, built his own square-barrel, 250cc cylinder and head for the Silverpilen engine.

This is a 1960 Husqvarna Silverpilen 175.

The basic diagram of the Flink 250X.

When Husqvarna introduced the 175cc Silverpilen in 1955, Swedish young men were drawn to its lightweight and racy-looks (much as American teenagers were draw to the affordable Hodaka Ace 100 a decade later). The 9.5 horsepower machine was the perfect starting point for wanna-be motocross racers and Gustav Flink was ready to build the parts to make this little bike into the machine that spawned Swedish greatest generation of Grand Prix stars.

The Flink 250X engine had a 69.5mm by 64.5mm bore and stroke, five-speed transmission, 32mm Bing carb, the clutch was mounted on the crankshaft and the head pipe came out of the cylinder and went into the lower portion of the frame (which doubled as the expansion chamber).

Naturally, that led him in 1967, after four years of R&D, he built the first Flink 250X. It was way ahead of its time. It was very light and narrow. The gas tank and airbox were part of the frame, as was the exhaust pipe. The lower portion of the frame was the expansion chamber and even the footpegs were hollow to be used as part of the pipe. The first two Flink 250Xs had steel frames, but the following units were all aluminum alloy. Leif Norberg designed the alloy chassis and believes that no more than 20 bikes and some additional engines were ever produced. Unfortunately Gustav Flink died of cancer in 1972 at 52 years of age. While Gustav’s death ended the Flink motorcycle factory—the remaining 250X bikes and his original Silverpilen parts are collectors items.

ELMENTARY SUPERCROSS MATH: WHO’S CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES ARE OVER?

2020 Glendale Supercross_Adam Cianciarulo-6883Because of unfortunate crashes, normally while running in the top three, Adam Cianciarulo (9) isn’t where he should be in the points chase.

If you win an AMA Supercross Main Event you earn 26 points, second gets 23 and third gets 21 and so on until 22nd place gets 1 point. Basic math tells you that if you are 26 points behind the points leader, you are one full event behind—which means you’d need to win a race just to get even with the points leader. Worse yet, if you fall 52 points behind the leader, you are two full races out of first place.

Guess what? Only six riders in the 450 class are still racing on the same race as points leader Ken Roczen. They are Eli Tomac, Justin Barcia, Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb and Adam Cianaciarulo. Everyone else is a full race behind Roczen.

Dean Wilson 2020 Anaheim 1 Supercross -58Dean Wilson is 54 points out of first place and since each race pays the winner 26 points, Dean is two races plus 2 points behind Ken Roczen.

The remaining riders on the track are at least one full race behind—and that group consists of Malcolm Stewart, Justin Brayton, Blake Baggett,  Zach Osborne and Justin Hill. By using elementary math you can see that the top 11 riders are the only riders in the 2020 AMA 450 Supercross series who aren’t two whole races behind the points leader. Two races (26 x 2= 52) equals 52 points and 52 points subtracted from Ken Roczen’s 113 points is 61. Justin Hill sits on the bubble of 61 points.

2020 Anaheim 2 Supercross Chad ReedChad Reed could not race in Oakland because of broken ribs from his first turn crash at Phoenix. Chad is now 98 points behind Ken Roczen.

The riders who are already two races behind in points after only 5 races  is a small group—it consists of Dean Wilson, Aaron Plessinger, Vince Friese and Martin Davalos. That is a total of 15 riders in every event who can claim to be within two races of the points leader. Every other rider is three or more races behind Ken Roczen. (26 x 3 =78 points). And 78 points subtracted from Roczen’s 113 points on leaves 35 points. At this point in the season, if an AMA Supercross rider has less that 35 points, he is three races behind after five races. Riders in this category, often because of bad luck, crashes or injury, are Tyler Bowers, Justin Bogle, Chris Blose, Chad Reed, Alex Ray, Kyle Cunningham, Kyle Chisholm and Benny Bloss

WHO HAS NOT FALLEN MORE THAN 26 POINTS BEHIND IN THE 450 STANDINGS

1. Ken Roczen..-0
2. Eli Tomac…-3
3. Justin Barcia…-15
4. Jason Anderson…-17

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: 2013 WORLD TWO-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP

In its fourth year as a stand-alone race the 2013 World Two-Stroke Championship poster was a parody of a wanted poster. The purse was $9500 and the bulk of that went to winner Sean Collier, who would repeat again in 2014. If you think that Collier used his famous Kawasaki KX500 Beast to win the title, you’d be wrong. Collier won both of his World Two-Stroke Championships on Yamaha YZ250s.
