• MXA FIRST RIDE: 2023 KTM 450SXF—SO NEW YOU MAY NEED TO READ THE MANUAL

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: ACERBIS METALLIC “TEAL” FULL PLASTIC KIT

MXA’s Josh Mosiman set out to race the Pala 450 National on a Honda CRF450WE Works Edition and the Hangtown 450 National on a Kawasaki KX450SR Special Racer. Last year at the final 450 National the 2021 series Josh raced a box-stock KTM 450SXF—just to prove that a rider could race a stock bike and qualify in the “Fast 40.” This year, he wanted to race the two Japanese-built Limited-Edition machines, the WE and the SR, as part of the test to see how they would perform. Instead of being on a stock bike, like last year, he had the suspension beefed-up and Pro Circuit exhaust systems added to make him a little more comfortable.

MXA also gave him back-up bikes, mainly to steal parts off, if needed. At Pala, the CRF450WE engine suffered a terminal problem in qualifying and Josh had to use the back-up bike, not for parts, but for both motos. The back-up KX450SR sat unused, but it did attract a lot of attention with its metallic teal Acerbis plastic kit gleaming in the sun. MXA added Throttle Syndicate graphics in the same shade of metallic teal. For those that don’t know, teal is a blue-green color that changes color whether in the sun or shade. You can order it from Acerbis at www.acerbisusa.com or your local dealer. The retail price is $175.00 for the full kit (fenders, radiator wings, side panels, front number plate and fork guards).

• MAXIME RENAUX INJURED IN GERMAN GP QUALIFYING

Maxime Renaux gambled on himself for the 2022 season and elected to move out of the 250 class, even through his was the current 250 World Champion and move the tougher 45o MXGP class. It was going great until round 11 in Germany.

French GP rider Maxime Renaux took a giant leap upward this season when he decided not to defend his 2021 FIM 250 World Championship and make the move to the 450 class instead. It was a gamble, but Renaux quickly moved into second overall in 450 GP points, behind Tim Gajser, and looked like he was on the way to becoming a bonafide MXGP star.

Unfortunately, Maxime over-rotated a jump in his qualifying race for the German Grand Prix at Teutschental and jumped through the bars to land on the down slope. Renaux got up and rode his YZ450F back to the paddock, but immediately reported to the track’s medical center after experiencing significant pain in his back. Following the doctors assessment at the track, he was transported to the University Hospital of Halle, where an MRI scan confirmed that he has fractured his T1, T2, T5 and T7 vertebra.

Maxime Renaux (959) will have to recover from four fractured vertabra before he can return to action—the MXGP season doesn’t end until September 18.

Maxime said later on Instagram, “I had a big get off on the finish jump. Results are a broken back and a broken coccyx, need some more examination to be 100% sure of the exact injuries. I am grateful to get away from this one, with feeling on my whole body and able to walk. I feel really disappointed and sorry, this season was going great and felt like I had more to give. We will be back, this is sure.”

Unable to race the German GP, Renaux dropped from second in 450 points to fourth—there are no GP races in the next two weeks. He has returned to Belgian to consult his own doctors and to formulate a recovery program.

MOTO-PHOTO QUIZ ANSWER
: Andy Jefferson, the first black motocross racer to make a premier Supercross main event, is standing there without his shirt on. Andy raced the 250 class that day. Today, Andy is the media manager for KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas. Next to Andy is his long-time buddy and MXA guy Zapata Espinoza (with his trademark Mohawk haircut). Although Zap no longer sports the Mohawk he was famous back in 1982, he has been a valued addition to MXA, MOTOcross, Mountain Bike Action and today is the editor of Road Bike Action magazine. Next to Zap, to his left is Mitch Payton, who sponsored Andy Jefferson through Anaheim Husqvarna—which became Pro Circuit.
