MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: “RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY” OR COME TO SOCAL

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: NIHILO CONCEPTS SOS SECONDARY ON SWITCH (SOS)

The “just in case button” that can get your bike started.

The Nihilo Concepts SOS button solves a problem that is fast becoming an issue on electric start dirt bikes without kick-starters. The SOS is a “Secondary On Switch” that can be mounted in a safe and protected location on the bike, so if your OEM start button is ripped off or damaged, all you need to do is reach for the Nihilo SOS and your back in action.

Electric start off-road motorcycles are very popular and the weight savings by eliminating the kick starter is a great idea but if you have ever been deep in the woods or at the back of the motocross track and had your handlebar start button break or fail you would find yourself stranded. It’s not easy to push start your bike in the deep sand or push it up and down hills trying to get back to your truck. Don’t get caught in this situation, install a Nihilo SOS on your bike and ride with confidence knowing you have a backup.

The button and wire leads are 100% waterproof, high-quality military-grade components that will last the life of your motorcycle. Equipped with super-strong double face tape, it will stick to the frame, inside of your shrouds, in the air box, or just about any place you can think of. The idea is to make sure it’s in a protected spot on the bike, so if you crash or even tip over the wrong way, the SOS won’t be in danger. The retail price is $69.99 at www.nihiloconcepts.com

“PASHA 125 OPEN” TWO-STROKE RACE ON SATURDAY—PLUS FOUR-STROKE CLASSES FOR ALL

The Pasha 125 Open is the strangest two-stroke race you will ever attend (and you can race it even if you don’t have a 125 two-stroke, because it will have all the regular classes as a normal race for two-and-four-strokes). But, it will only have three 125 two-stroke classes (all three pay purse money). The first class is for 125 Pros, the second class is for 30- to 49-year-old 125 racers (it also pays purse money) and the final 125 two-stroke class is for Over-50-year-old 125 two-strokes (it pays also). The three special 125 classes are open to two-strokes up to 150cc. There will be a full day of two-and four-stroke events, but no 50cc, 65cc or 85cc minicycles. For more info go to www.glenhelen.com.

WISECO WORLD TWO-STROKE MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ON SATURDAY OCT. 3

Dust off your Ratio-Rite and grab a couple extra spark plugs for the toolbox, the Wiseco Two-Stroke Motocross World Championships hosted by Fasthouse is scheduled for October 3, 2020. The World Two-Stroke Motocross  Championships have been an annual favorite at Glen Helen for 11 years and  Wisecos roots in two-stroke racing date back over seven decades.

Glen Helen’s massive Talladega first turn.

“Wiseco Performance Products was built by grassroots racers from the passion for two-stroke competition and performance over 78 years ago and has been supplying two-stroke performance parts to the industry ever since,” said Scott Highland, Director of Powersports for Wiseco. “We are all avid racers and share a passion for the sport, so we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to continue our support of the iconic World Two- Stroke Championships at Glen Helen. We can already smell the premix in the air!”

Robbie Wageman (141) won last year’s Championship. Here he is chased by Tyer Bowers (43), Mike Brown (3)  and second overall Carlen Gardener (805).

Lori Wilson, Glen Helen Raceway Events Director said,. “The event has grown every year, and with Wiseco’s support for 2020, the event will be the largest ever. The race will offer a combined Pro purse of $10,000 as well as over 40 different classes covering 50cc to 450cc displacements, youth to Over-70 age ranges, and Beginner to Pro skill levels. The young 50cc and 65cc racers will even get their own specially designed REM and Pee-Wee tracks for their races. Additionally, Pasha Afshar will be adding the Pasha Racing 125cc Pro, 30+ Pro and 50+ Pro classes into the World Two-Stroke mix and will host a 125cc “Pasha 125 Open” warm-up race on September 5 to help 125 riders get ready of the October 3, World Two-Stroke race. MAYBE THEY SHOULD CHANGE THE NAME TO THE “2020 ITALIAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS”

MXGP seems to have canceled more races than they have held, the list includes Germany, Sweden, Turkey, China, Portugal, Russia, Indonesia (twice), Czech Republic, Finland and the Motocross des Nations.

What did they replace them with? A so-called World Championship that is holding the bulk of its races in Italy, and by “bulk” we mean 9 of the 18 scheduled races in Italy. The rest of the schedule isn’t much better as two other nations will be holding three races a piece (Belgium and Latvia). That means that 15 of the 2020 Grand Prix’s 18 races will be held in three countries—Latvia (3), Belgium (3) and Italy (9). The only stand-alone Grand Prix with a firm date on the remaining 2020 schedule, is Spain, on October 11th. There is some hope that the organozers can squeeze Argentina onto the schedule in late November, but the factory and privateer teams will most likely refuse to make a long and expensive trip to South America for the last race of the year

IT’S HERE! DAVE MILLER MEMORIAL FACE MASKS BACK IN STOCK

So many people have continued to request the Scott Face Mask that Curt Evans (the artist behind the project) and Jimmy Mac produced to help famous tuner Dave Miller in his fight with cancer. They sold out the first batch of masks in record time, but have produced a new production run. They are just two motocross guys trying to help out the family of a friend. Here is Curt Evan’s message and how you can get a few masks.

“Wow! Thanks so much for your interest in the Scott Face Mask and helping out Dave Miller’s family, ” Said Curt. “We appreciate your patience. We didn’t think the response would be so great after our initial run of over 400 masks allowed us to donate over $3500 to help Dave’s family! (Unfortunately, Dave lost his battle with cancer on May 22, but his family still needs our help, so we are not stopping our efforts to lessen their burden). The masks are $20 each for anywhere in the USA. Sorry, no foreign orders at this time). This includes shipping through the U.S. Mail. You can PayPal the money or send a check. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I’ll get you the details. The masks are back in stock and ready to ship. Moto people are the best!”

MXA’s KTM 366SXF project bike graces the cover of the September 2020 issue.

And here it is! A 366cc KTM 350SXF. Not only is it the cheapest horsepower possible, but it has a torquey broad powerband that is more like the original YZ400, instead of a high-rpm, big-bore 250.

The Husqvarna FX450 cross-country bike is really just an FC450 motocross bike with a big tank and an 18-inch wheel. But, we were interested in the powerband. It was smooooth. So smooth that every MXA test rider could ride it faster—because it had a killer map.

We took the FIM World Supermoto Champion’s TM 450SMX-FI out to the tarmac to see what we could grind down faster—the footpegs or our elbows. We had lots of fun finding out.

In our “MXA Retro Test” we went back in time to test Tommy Hahn’s 2007 Factory Honda CRF250. This was from the day’s when Honda had their own 250 team—and of course the best CRF250 on the track.

Brad Lackey was goal oriented. He wanted to win the 500 World Motocross Championship at all cost. He spent 11 years in pursuit of his goal. And once he finally achieved it, nobody would sign him for the next year. Read all about it here.
