ROCZEN GRABBED THE HEADLINES, BUT THERE WERE OTHERS DECIMATED IN SAN DIEGO

Well, it was a short season. Justin Bogle missed the first couple rounds after suffering a head inury and now he might miss the rest with a broken humerus.

The news of Ken Roczen’s brokeN hand overshadowed several riders who were also injured in San Diego. Here are a few of them:

Justin Bogle: JGR Suzuki rider Justin Bogle was landed on at the San Diego Supercross and sustained a broken right arm. Justin underwent surgery on Monday and is on the road to recovery. JGRMX team manager, Jeremy Albrecht, said, “Bogle was making progress throughout the day in San Diego. Unfortunately, he was landed on by another rider and sustained a break to his right humerus. He was transported to a local hospital for observation. On Monday, Justin underwent what his surgeons, Dr. Tal David and Dr. Christopher Sherman, are calling a successful surgery, which included fixing the injury with two plates and screws. As far as a timeline for Bogle’s return, we will have a better idea once Justin heals up from surgery and resumes daily activities. Malcolm Stewart will continue racing for the team while Bogle is sidelined.”

Justin Hoeft. Justin Hoeft looked great in the 250 Last Chance at the San Diego Supercross. He was leading and looking to easily secure a spot in the 250 main event until he hit a very steep face too hard and was kicked up in the air. He ejected and reportedly broke both ankles in the crash. Justin will have surgery this week. You can see the video of his crash by clicking here.

Alex Martin has scored 21 points so far in the 250 West (and he got 18 of those in Oakland and 1 other point in San Diego even though he didn’t start the race). That’s a hard bullet to bite for a title contender.

Alex Martin. Troy Lee Design’s Alex Martin made the 250 West main event in San Diego even though he jammed his wrist badly in his heat race. But, when the 250 Main rolled around, the pain and swelling in his wrist got so bad that he didn’t feel that he could hold on—so he made the smart decision not to race. Luckily for Alex the 250 West goes on hiatus and he will have over a month to heal up.

AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: QUARANTINE ZONE—STAY AWAY FOR FIVE DAYS

Under this AMA rule, no rider can practice, test or race on an AMA National track within the five days prior to the National race—this includes “open ride days” and covers the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday leading up to the Saturday National.

The exception to the rule is for riders who are invited to ride for Press Day. Sometimes this is limited to 12 riders, but sometime it’s a free-for-all. It is, however, not suppose to be a free practice session for the invited riders. It is designed as an opportunity for riders to do press photos, interviews and videos to help promote the event. MX Sports has often allowed Press Day riders to ride for incredibly long press sessions—which gives the riders at Press Day an advantage over the riders who were not invited—which is normally the privateers. Even if the Press Day list of invited riders is limited to 12 riders—the officials have often allow non-invited factory teams to show up and ride, while turning privateers away. This is another AMA rule that is strongly enforced against privateers, but rarely enforced against factory riders.

Eli Tomac (3) is now 77 points behind Jason Anderson for the 2018 AMA Supercross title. His 22nd at San Diego came after a first turn crash that caused his retirement from the race because, reportedly, his grip was ripped off. Even if Anderson took a three-week vacation to Tahiti, Eli would still not pass him in points.

Suzuki electric Extrigger.

The Suzuki Extrigger Concept bike boasted fore and aft light-emitting devices that transmitted information via complex blinking… for no reason that we can think of.

The battery plugs into the Extrigger gas tank—which doesn’t hold gas.

The aluminum-framed Suzuki Extrigger comes with inverted forks, mag wheels, disc brakes and 136.7 pound dry weight. The electric motor comes from Panasonic.

The Kawasaki J was designed to change the ergonomics to suit the speed and style of riding you were doing.

The electric-powered Kawasaki “J” concept features two narrow front wheels and one larger rear wheel. In motion the “J’s” handlebars and riding position can transform from a road-racer stance to a comfortable riding position. In performance-mode, the front wheels and handlebars move closer together, and rider and bike-height drops closer to the road.

The Yamaha Tricity has actually been produced, even though it looks like a Honda ATC 90 turned around backwards?

The Yamaha Tricity, like the Kawasaki “J” comes with three-wheels, but it is lighter and smaller. It weighs around 300 pounds and is powered by a 125cc four-stroke engine with an automatic transmission.
The Caterham Seven is a continuation brand for the Lotus Seven that ended production in 1972.

You may have heard of Caterham sports cars. They make a retro continuation of the classic Lotus Seven. After Lotus ended production of the Lotus Seven in 1972, Caterham bought the rights to the design, and today make both kits and fully assembled cars.

But you probably have not heard of the Caterham electric bicycles. They make two bicycle models: (1) The Classic e-bike cruiser with 1920’s board track styling and (2) the Carbon e-bike with a 36-Volt, 250 Watt brushless motor, feeding its power through an eight-speed Shimano Nexus gear hub.

The Polaris Sportsman WV850 H.O. is the first production vehicle to come with airless tires—what Polaris calls Non-Pneumatic Tire (NPT) technology. The “Terrain Armor” tires can never go flat, will work even if 30 percent of their honeycomb design is broken.
Oakley’s Head Up Display goggles connect to your phone

Five years ago Oakley introduced its Airwave HUD (Heads Up Display) goggles connect to your smartphone to displays speed, navigation, GPS, music, phone calls, text, jump height, air time and distance. At $800 a pair, you can figure out why you’ve never seen a pair.

Yamaha 02 Pursuit.

Built on a loaner Yamaha WR250, the O2 Pursuit looks like any other off-road bike, but its power comes from compressed air stored in a scuba diving tank hidden under the bodywork. It is powered by DiPietro air rotary engine. Range is reportedly 60 miles and it has been clocked at 87 mph.

With sports concussions in the news today, as well as 5 years ago, Reebok was on to something with its $150 Checklight head impact indicator. It’s a skullcap that you wear during sports. Its built-in sensors monitor the impacts experienced during those activities. Using a red (bad), yellow (medium), and green (good-to-go), LED-system, the Checklight gives coaches and team managers a visual display of physical impact during sports. The microprocessor also logs the number of impacts it receives over time.

Every weekend at Glen Helen, Gary Jones (844) and Mike Monaghan (739) run into each other at the REM rider’s meeting. Today, four-time 250 National Champion Gary Jones races in the Over-60 class and Mike is in the Over-50 Experts. On this night in 1981, Gary and Mike were on the starting line together in a totally jam-packed San Diego stadium.
