MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: STARS? WE DON’T NEED NO STINKIN’ STARS

HOW MANY INJURIES TO THE STARS IS TOO MANY?

Justin Barcia arlington x-ray Justin Barcia’s hand shows the effects of jump crazy tracks.

If Feld ran the Ringling Brothers Circus would they let the lion tamer shoot the lion during every show? So why are they willing to injure the stars of Supercross with ridiculous jump-ladened tracks. They need to seek competent help when it comes to how to build a Supercross track. If they don’t there won’t be anyone left. Above is Justin Barcia’s hand after he doubled a triple and was clipped by another rider’s handlebar (even though he had moved out of the racing line).

Ken Roczen post surgeryKen Roczen’s right hand is very reminiscent of his left arm from one years ago. Roczen had surgery on Friday and will miss the rest of the Supercross season.

Losing the injured Ken Roczen and Justin Barcia removed the “feel good” stories of the 2018 Supercross season. Fans were interested in Kenny’s comeback from injury and Barcia’s resurrection from the unemployment line. Now they are gone. Supercross is dangerous enough, but the high-speed, nothing but jump and whoops track designs make it all the more so. The tracks need to be slowed down, there needs to be more wheels-on-the-ground racing and better design low-speed obstacles. The fans might say they like jumps, but that doesn’t mean they like nothing but jumps. In the old days there were a few big jumps—which were spectacular, but the rest of the track was designed for racing. Having the track littered with jumps every 20 feet, most of which are jumped over anyway, doesn’t make any sense. Plus, did you notice that the bowl turns are back…bigger than ever. They were cut down a few years ago because of several dangerous incidents.

Josh GrantJosh Grant reportedly broke his lower leg on Saturday in practice (and couldn’t race in Dallas). He will now try to recover in time for the AMA 450 Nationals.

Feld probably took better care of the monkey’s at the circus than they do the Supercross racers (who depend on them for their protection—and don’t seem to be getting it from the promoters or the AMA officials). The AMA and Feld need to think about the well being of the young men who are putting the coins in both of their pockets.

HOW THE MONTESA VR GOT ITS NAME

KALEVIvehkonnenKalevi Vehkonnen was Montesa’s best performing GP rider in the early 1970s, so Montesa named their bikes “Vehkonnen Replicas” or VR for short. And, even after Kalevi left Montesa, all future designations started with a “V.”

2018 TAMPA SUPERCROSS ANIMATED TRACK MAP

AMA RULE OF THE WEEK: LIKE STARTING ON A CHAIN LINK FENCE

A2 gate

The object of the rule to replace the traditional dirt start with a metal grid in place of dirt reminds lots of long-time Nationals fans of when the AMA requested concrete starting pads for all the Nationals. When only four tracks went to the expense and trouble of replacing their dirt starting lines with 140-feet of concrete, the AMA changed their minds and made the four tracks remove the concrete. No apology. No thank you. No we’re sorry. Just an edict to get rid of the expensive starting lines that the AMA had asked for. The idea behind concrete starts for the Nationals was because it was impossible to have 40 gates that were equal in angle, depth or dirt consistency. The AMA thought that perfectly level concrete pads would be fairer. Now the Supercross promoters have dropped dirt starts in favor of starting on metal grids for the same reason.

Along with the metal grids came a rule about using starting blocks. The starting blocks have to be approved by the AMA tech inspector and painted black or silver. What no orange, red, blue, yellow or white? On a side note, the AMA outdoor Nationals will stick with dirt starts.

MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK: IF THE WEEK WAS JANUARY OF 1995

The 1995 Yamaha YZ250 was very colorful and so was the 1995 Sinsalo MXA gear and MXA’s iconic Indian headress Shoei helmet. That’s Willy Musgrave at the helm and the blue front rim wasn’t stock—just an opical illusion that was precursor of 2018’s blue Yamaha rims.
