TV TIME CHANGE: ATLANTA SUPERCROSS NOT AT 7:00 P.M. (EASTERN), BUT TAPED DELAYED TO 10:00 P.M. (7:00 P.M. PACIFIC)

A UFC fight bumped the Atlanta Supercross after the TV schedule had been announced (for months) from live at 7:00 to tape delayed at 10:00. Beware of the Internet if you want to watch it without knowing the results because most media sites are going to run the race results as they happen (and that includes MXA).

The majority of races this season are being shown on Fox Sports 1 (including Atlanta). Boston and Salt Lake City will be on the main Fox TV network, but these races will be daylight races (and shown as early as 12:00 noon on the west coast).

CHRISTIAN CRAIG GETS CALLED UP TO THE BIG SHOW FOR THE FOURTH TIME

Christian CraigChristian Craig will be Honda’s sole 450 rider.

Honda press release: With riders Ken Roczen and Cole Seely out of action with injuries, Team Honda HRC announces today that GEICO Honda’s Christian Craig will race a CRF450R as the factory squad’s sole rider at this weekend’s Atlanta Supercross and next week’s Daytona Supercross. Following a promising start to the AMA Supercross season, Team Honda HRC has been plagued by injuries. Roczen suffered injuries to his right hand in San Diego after posting three podium finishes in the first five rounds. Seely was running second in the points standings when he fractured his pelvis and sacrum at last weekend’s Tampa round.

Ken Roczen post surgeryKen Roczen says his throttle hand will be healed in time for the AMA 450 Nationals.

Roczen is making progress in his recovery. On Tuesday, February 27, the German visited his local physician for his first follow-up appointment since Dr. Viola performed surgery on February 16. Roczen’s stitches were removed from all five incisions, and another X-ray was taken. He is still wearing a brace and has another checkup in three weeks. Roczen is optimistic about the future and has his sights set on the start of the AMA Pro Motocross series, which begins at Hangtown on May 19.

Teammate Seely is still admitted at Tampa’s St. Joseph’s Hospital but is hoping to be released by the end of the week. At that point, he will return to his temporary home in Claremont, Florida, where he’ll remain until his follow-up appointment.

Cole SeelyCole Seely is still in the hospital.

This will mark the fourth stint that Craig has served as a substitute rider for the factory squad. While pitting under the Team Honda HRC tent last year, Craig posted a pair of 11th place finishes at the Salt Lake City and Las Vegas AMA Supercross rounds, and he then finished 11th overall in the AMA Pro Motocross series. He also rode for the team at the Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas last October.

“I’m super excited to be riding the CRF450R for the next few weekends, but I’m also extremely bummed for Cole and Ken,” Craig said. “Cole and I are training and riding partners and kind of do everything together, so seeing him get hurt last weekend was really upsetting. I worked with the team for a couple supercross rounds last year and the entire summer, so we know each other well. I also have an idea of what settings I like on the bike. We’ll have a couple days to test before heading to Atlanta this weekend. I’m grateful for this opportunity and hoping Cole and I can get back to doing our normal routine soon.”

MXGP STARTS SUNDAY: CAN YOU NAME THE AMERICAN GRAND PRIX WINNERS?

DONNYSCHMITThe late Donny Schmit is the winningest American rider in Grand Prix history.

Americans fans have never shown much interest in the FIM World Championships. Typically, former American stars go to Europe at the end of their careers (as a paid vacation) or at the beginning of their careers when no factory team in the USA wants them (like current GP riders Thomas Covington and Darian Sanayei). Still, a surprising number of Americans have won GPs — 36 to be exact. And, while a large number of those wins came at USGPs in Unadilla, Budds Creek, Glen Helen, Mid-Ohio, Hollister, Carlsbad and R.J. Hampshire’s win in he 250 class last year in Jacksonville, Florida, the overall number is still impressive. Here is the list.

WHO’S GOING TO MISS THE TRIP OF ARGENTINA

Supercross isn’t the only place where racers get hurt at an alarming rate. When the GP series goes to Argentina for first round of the 2018 FIM Wolrd Championships this weekend, these riders will be missing.

Arnaud Tonus: Tonus had shoulder surgery last week in Switzerland. His shoulder was dislocated and he decided to have it fixed for safety and medical reasons.

Tim Gajser: Gajser broke his jaw at an Italian Championship round a few weeks ago when he hit his face on his handlebars after flat landing a jump. He had surgery to repair two fractures in his jawbone. He will skip Argentina, but should be back when the series returns to Europe.

Brian Bogers: Bogers signed on to be the second 450 rider on the HRC Honda team (with Tim Gajser), but he fracture his right foot in November—and will not be on the starting line in Argentina.Honda will have no factory rider sin the 450 class.

Jordi Tixier: Tixier torn a tendon his hand in practice for the Hawkstone race two weeks ago. He had to have surgery to reattached the tendon. He will miss Argentina.
