Did you ever want your feet to look just like Ryan Villopoto’s? Now that would be a die-hard fanboy. Well, now you can with Ryan’s new signature shoe from DC Shoes. Featuring a leather, nubuck or suede upper, these low-top shoes feature a breathable mesh panel and an airbag for impact protection and cushioning. For more info go to www.dcshoes.com

NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT: VENTZ

Vents-5Ventz is an air scoop that attaches to your jacket to help cool you down. When riding in warm weather an invisible layer of hot air is trapped under yoru chest protector, offroad jacket or leather cruiser wear, Ventz creates a flow of air that helps, dare we say it, vent the trapped heat out through your neckline. AWARD TIME! TAKING CARE OF LAST YEAR’S BUSINESS

mitchpaytondannythompson1Danny Thompson (left) presenting the Mickey Thompson Award to Mitch Payton.

At Anaheim 1 there were three special ceremonies to hand out awards to deserving individuals. Ryan Villopoto was on hand to get his 2014 AMA Supercross ring. Tyler Bowers was given his 2014 Arenacross Championship ring. And, Pro Circuit’s Mitch Payton was given the Mickey Thompson Award of Excellence.

MAN DOWN: WILL HAHN OUT FOR SUPERCROSS SEASON

hahn15Wil Hahn.

Monster Energy Kawasaki will be a man down now that the doctor’s report is back on Wil Hahn’s Anaheim 1 crash. Hahn broke the same arm that he had plated last year and suffered additional back and rib injuries. Hahn spent most of past season rehabbing from his March 29 crash in St. Louis. Having been pegged to join the Davi Millsaps at the Kawasaki team for 2015 was a big boost for Hahn, but now he will sit out the 2015 Supercross series and try to get ready for the AMA Nationals, which start on May 16. Kawasaki has not decided if they will hire a fill-in rider to replace Hahn, but an injury this early in the season almost demands it. Let the guessing begin.

NICK WEY’S NEW 2015 TEAM STRUCTURE

NICKWEY2015Nick Wey had a bad nights at A1 and Phoenix, but he will rebound.

Mafia Moto Crew/Pasion MX is looking forward to the 2015 AMA Supercross series. Nick Wey will be competing in the 450 class aboard a Kawasaki KX450F. Last season, Wey, finished the year with strong main event performances and is looking forward to building on that momentum in the 2015 season. Entering his 18th professional season, Weysaid, “I’m feeling the best I have on the motorcycle in years, and I am really looking forward to a success filled year with all of our partners.”

New to the team for the upcoming season is Pasion MX. They will come on board as co-title sponsor alongside Mafia Moto Crew. Pasion MX owner Marisol Rios-Reid said, “I am very excited to join forces with Mafia Moto Crew for the 2015 season. Growing up in Costa Rica, it has always been a dream of mine to go racing in the USA and there is not a more professional person, both, on and off the track then Mr. Wey.” For more info go to www.mafiamotocrew.com.

THREE NEW CMRC CANADIAN NATIONAL RULE CHANGES

canadamotocross466a

Restrictions for 250 Class: Riders that finished in the top 20 overall at the AMA Outdoor Nationals (250 and 450) or FIM GPs (MXGP/MX2/MX3) will not be eligible to compete in the MX2 Pro/Am class. This would apply for all riders within the past five years. Overall standings in AMA Supercross does not apply. (This rule eliminates most established AMA National riders from the 250 class — including Vince Friese — which is probably why they wrote it. Vince was 18th in the 2010 AMA 250 Nationals and 18th in the 2012 AMA 450 Nationals).

Second Bike: Riders will be permitted to use a second bike to race at each national. If one bike has a mechanical failure in practice, a qualifier or first moto, the rider may use a second bike providing it has gone through tech inspection on the previous day to the National. (This rule will be hard to enforce because they will have to determine exactly what constitutes a “mechanical failure.”  Is a bent clutch lever justification enough? It is likely that the high dollar teams will just setup one bike for one moto and another bike for moto two — which takes race day bike prep out of the equation to some degree. In the long run, this rule is not a very good idea.)

New Points Structure: Points will be awarded to top the 25 per moto. The intention of this change is to reward points to privateers that travel the nationals but finish outside of the top 20. This would also encourage more local riders to compete at the national level and participate in a greater number of events. The winner will get 30 points, second 27, third 25, fourth 23, fifth 21, sixth 20 and then one point increments from all the way to 25th. (Why not pay points to every rider in the race, break it down to decimal points and give every rider a trophy. This may not be much of an incentive for local riders to compete, but it will keep Championship contenders, who have issues, on the track longer just to get the extra points offered for 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 25th place).

THIS IS NOT MOTOCROSS: TWO UNIQUE BIKES FROM THE CSC

CSCADVENTURE
CSC Cyclone 250 Adventure Bike.

CSC stand for California Scooter Company, but its obvious that the “C” in CSC could represent China, since the available 150cc and 250cc engines in these two bikes are from the Zongshen Industrial group. The CSC Cyclone is a 250cc adventure bike — which makes it the smallest displacement adventure bike around. But that small size could mean big fun at an affordable price. At $3495 the Cyclone comes with luggage, luggage racks, windshield and frame guards. Maybe not the perfect bike for freeway travel, but it could be spot-on for day tripping in the mountains.

1950mustangead250
1950 Mustang ad.

The CSC Classic is really a modern take on the old-school Mustang motorcycle. The original Mustang was designed in the 1930s and was powered by a 125cc Villiers engine, but eventually it used a 320cc Busy Bee engine. Mustang went out of business in 1965.

CSCCLASSICMUSTANG
The 2015 CSC version of the Mustang.

The 2015 CSC Classic version of the Mustang is available in 150cc and 250cc version — with a fairly wide range of colors and styles. The retail price of the “new Mustang” ranges from $3995 to $4595. For more info go to www.californiascooterco.com

GRAND PRIX ENTRY LIST FOR QATAR OPENER

QATARA
Qatar is in the center of motocross’ Golden Triangle. That is Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. No really it is — there are at least 100 racers  located in this epicenter of moto fandom.

Even with Romain Febvre, Jose Butron, Christophe Charlier, Kei Yamamoto, Alessandro Lupino and Glenn Coldenhoff moving up from the 250 class to the 450 class for 2015, all Youthstream could muster was 29 riders for the 450 season opener on February 21 in Qatar. This after announcing that they planned to allow 40 riders on the grid in 2015. The 250 class not only lost the above named riders, but also Arnaud Tonus (to the USA). However, they still managed to field 31 riders for the 250s in Qatar — although American fans will not recognize many of the names.

More impressive is the Russian showing with Maxim Nazarov, Evgeny Bobryshev, Viacheslav Golovkin, Vsevelov Brylyakov, Aleksandr Tonkov, Guryev Artem and Michael Ivanov all representing Mother Russia on the world stage.
