REMEMBER WHEN “EVERYTHING WAS SANO AT MILLER MANO?” MILLER MANO’S 1976 CATALOG

You may be too young to remember Dave Miller’s iconic Miller Mano race shop. Dave was definitely not a businesman — he was a hotshot 125 Pro, certified wild man and crazy inventor. But most of all Dave loved motorcycles and was a superior craftsman who could build anything. This isn’t an “in memorium” for Dave Miller, he’s not dead. In fact, most people still remember Dave from the exotic minis that he built for Eddie Hicks under the name DMC. Dave is still working out of the same shop on LaPalma Avenue that’s he been in for decades. You should stop by and see what crazy contraptions he’s building…if he answers the door.

In memory of Miller Mano, which died many years ago, we present a few pages out of Dave’s 1976 Miller Mano catalog—”Everything’s sano at Miller Mano.”

ADDENDUM: THE MOST FAMOUS DAVE MILLER PHOTO OF ALL-TIME

The MXA caption read: Miller Mano: Dave Miller of DMC fame originally started his hop-up career with a business known as Miller Mano. It’s slogan was “Everything’s sano at Miller Mano.” Dave started the first high-performance shopping cart races that were an enormous fad in 1974.

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: WHEN “SIN SPONSORS” WERE IN CHARGE

Before the U.S. Government stepped in to stop cigarette and alcohol companies from sponsoring sports and sporting events that attracted or had under age athletes, motocross and Supercross had lots of the so-called sin sponsors. Today, no teams or series are sponsored by Budweiser, Camel, Olympia beer or Chesterfield. This Camel ad is from 1992—but under the Master Settlement agreement in 1998 cigarettes were driven out of motocross.

BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: THE CHIVICKERA

Chivickera was a lightweight, super-compact, 50cc play bike that Yamaha build in 2005 to test the market. Simple-to-operate controls and a playful spirit made it easy and fun to ride. But don’t be fooled by the size, Chivickera’s performance comes from it air-cooled, 49cc, two-valve, four-stroke engine. The carb was a BDS and there were disc brakes front and rear. It never saw production..

SUBSCRIBE TO MXA & GET A $25 CHAPARRAL GIFT CARD—YOU MAKE A PROFIT BY READING MXA

If you had subscribed to Motocross Action, the September 2018 issue of MXA would be winging its way to your mailbox, computer or iphone already. It has tests of the all-new Kawasaki KX450, 2019 KTM 350SXF, Mike Brown’s 2001 KX125, and a wildly exotic TM MX300 Two-Stroke. Plus, there is a no holds barred Chad Reed interview, a complete analysis of the Glen Helen National and everything that you ever wanted to know about everything moto.

Do you subscribe to MXA? You should. We know that you think that print magazines are dead and that the internet will fill the void, but most of the stuff in the current issue of MXA won’t appear on the web for several months, if at all. Luckily, you can get all of MXA on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle or Android by going to the Apple Store, Amazon or Google Play or in a digital version. Even better you can subscribe to Motocross Action and get a $25 Chaparral gift card to spend on whatever motorcycle parts or products you need. MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT! NEKEN COIL-SPRING SFS TRIPLE CLAMP

WHAT IS IT? Have you ever seen the NK SFS air triple clamp? It has been used by the KTM, JGR and Star Yamaha teams with considerable success over the past five years. NK’s air triple clamps mount to the handlebars on tiny air shocks with oil damping hidden under the top clamp. They gave a 1/2 inch of movement to the handlebars. Test riders loved the feel of them, but they were very complex to make and thus very expensive. Now, NK has designed a less expensive version that replaces the complex air shocks with equally tiny coil-spring shocks (with air assist on one shock to act as a booster spring for adjustability). The price? $321.95 (top clamp only) at www.nk-neken.com.

(1) System. The NK SFS coil-spring triple clamp looks like a conventional triple clamp. All of the working parts are hidden under the top clamp and behind the front number plate. Unlike the expensive SFS air clamps, the coil-spring clamp’s Schrader valve is located on the bottom of the right-side shock body only. The air pressure is used as a booster so that the spring rate of the coils can be adjusted for heavier riders. The shock bodies support the NK handlebar mounts and offer 10mm of adjustable suspension travel.

Every test rider was amazed by the difference when the SFS coil spring clamps moved. Test riders reported not only less vibration and reduced chatter at the bars, but a more accurate feel from the bike’s front end because of the calmed-down steering response. In our opinion there is very little difference between the expensive SFS air triple clamps and the cheaper SFS coil-spring triple clamps. They both worked flawlessly once you got the air pressure right.

MXA MOTO-CHALLENGE: CAN YOU NAME THIS RIDER?

An old man by the time he rode his race bike through the streets of Italy. This rider rode this four-stroke to fame under two different brand names. Can you name the man, the two brands that he raced and the countries of manufacture of both bikes? Photo by Justyn NorekAnswer at the bottom of the page.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: ONE SHOT DEAL! SPECIAL RUN OF 1986 HONDA CR250 TWO-STROKE PIPES

This is a cool idea. Pro Circuit plans to built a special limited-edition run of 1986 Honda CR250 Works Pipe and 304 silencers for bike builder and vintage racers. Just like back in the day, Pro Circuit’s Works Pipe increases horsepower and torque, while the unplated, oiled metal finish gives your bike that “works look.” Completing the special throwback kit is a 304 Factory Sound Silencer that has a slightly longer body to add top-end performance while reducing noise output. The brushed aluminum silencer body and stainless steel inlet tube and end-cap make the 1986 CR250 silencer look as good as it performs. It brings back memories of Ricky Johnson in his Team Honda days.

Pro Circuit is accepting orders for the $425.00 1986 Honda CR250 kit now and fulfill them when they reach the required production number. Order now if you want to be included in this special offer. For more info go to www.procircuit.com
