MXA’A WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE CYCLE OF LIFE IS PLAYED OUT ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE

• GODSPEED! DICK LECHIEN (1936-2022)

Dick Lechien.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Maxima Racing Lubricants founder Dick Lechien at the age of 85. Dick not only built one of the premier motorsport oil companies, but he was also the father of 1984 AMA 125 National Champion, 1984 World Four-Stroke Champion, two-time member of the American Motocross des Nations teams in 1985 and 1988 and AMA Hall of Fame inductee Ron Lechien. Dick had his own racing credentials as a successful and well-known professional drag racer, who who entered the motorcycle business by owning a San Diego Honda dealership from 1968 to 1979. In 1979, Dick founded Maxima lubricants for motorcycles, but expanded it over the years to cover all types of motorsports. MXA is proud to say that most of what we know about modern motorcycle oils we learned directly from Dick Lechien.

Dick and Ronnie at the year Dealer Sh0w.

Dick Lechien once said, “I got involved in the motorcycle industry back in 1968 when I became a Honda dealer. I had a Honda/Kawasaki dealership for 11 years, got into boats and then got into Maxima. I got into Maxima because of Ronnie’s racing. At that time there were a lot of lubrication issues. We were using caster oils and suffering all kinds of issues with rings sticking. Castor oil is the reason I got into the oil business, but once I got into it I realized that there wasn’t enough castor oil business to build a business on, so I got into other products.”

Dick Lechien is survived by his wife Pat, son Ronnie and daughter Lorrie.

TROY LEE DESIGNS SOLD: “SYNERGISTIC INTEGRATION”

It has been reported that SBJ Capital, a private equity firm, has sold Troy Lee Designs to the 2Ride Group, which is owned by Eurazeo, a French private equity fund. The new partnership between 2Ride Group and Troy Lee Designs will be focused on building a worldwide presence through the “synergistic integration” of the TLD business into the 2Ride Group. This process will be led by Troy Lee, TLD CEO Jason Steris and 2Ride Group CEO Christophe Sicaud. This the second time that Troy Lee Designs has been bought by an equity fund, but they were an attractive target for 2Ride Group because their extensive line of protection products for the mountain bike and motocross markets will round out 2Ride Group’s existing product portfolio, which includes Shark, X-Lite, Bering and Nolan Helmets and along with Segura leather riding jackets and Bagster bike luggage.

THE APRIL 2022 ISSUE OF MXA IS OUT! THE BEST DEAL IN THE SPORT!

If you don’t subscribe to MXA, you are missing a whole different world of motocross news, facts, tests and photos. We cover the full spectrum of the sport—from four-stroke test, two-stroke test, retro tests, race coverage, technology and product test. For example, the just released April 2022 issue has a shootout between a perfectly retro-modded 2000 Kawasaki KX500 against a 1994 Honda CR500s.

We also went back in time to retro test the fabled 2010 Husaberg upside-down engine FX450. The Jens Elmwall-designed engine was a technical masterpiece—but it didn’t sell, was hard to work on and lots of Husaberg’s cutting edge innovations were too far ahead of the times. Did we mention that it weighed 260 pounds?

We also sat down with former AMA Pro and 250 West Supercross winner Casey Lytle to see what he’s been up to since his Honda of Troy, Yamaha of Troy, FMF Honda and Pro Circuit Kawasaki days. Casey now works at KTM where he has been the Factory Team Manager, Red Bull KTM team test rider, Race Team coordinator, West Coast Customer Service Manager and has since moved over to the KTM testing department where he oversees development on the new production bikes.

Inside the mag is a detailed analysis of the 20 Innermost secrets of the 2023 KTM 450SXF. There are things inside these bikes that you never dreamed of—we explain all of them. Plus,  you don’t want to miss the regular insights from Jody Weisel, Jamie Ellis and Daryl Ecklund or our tests of Alex Martin’s ClubMX Yamaha YZ450F, the 2022GasGas MC 250F and 2022 KTM 350SXF.

Even bigger is MXA’s 2022 125 Two-Stroke Shootout where we pit the KTM 125SX against the Yamaha YZ125, Gas Gas MC 125 and Husqvarna TC125‚ complete with dyno charts, weights and torque numbers. MXA TEAM TESTED: ALPINESTARS TECH 10 SUPERVENTED BOOTS

Alpinestars flagship Tech 10 boots have played a major role in the brand’s widespread popularity in the action sports world. Alpinestars has even introduced Tech 10 vented boot. The Supervented boots have the structural build of the newly redesigned Tech 10 boots while also increasing ventilation to reduce your body temperature on the track.

1986 Alpinestars Ventil-Action vented boots—note the air vent grills on top of the toe box and below the two buckles.

The Alpinestars Tech 10 Supervented boots are currently the only ventilated motocross boots on the market, but they’re not the first. In fact, Alpinestars introduced its Ventil-Action boots over 30 years ago. The newest Tech 10 Supervented boots were originally designed for Alpinestars off-road star Ricky Brabec, the first American rider to win the Dakar Rally. With the Rally spanning 4900 miles over 13 days in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, vented boots can make a big difference. The patented construction was designed to stream air into the boot through two inlet ports in the toe box and through the mesh intake material behind the straps on the front of the boot. Once inside, air flows through open channels in the sole of the inner bootie to cool your feet before exiting through the exhaust ports at the back and on the sides of the boot. The Alpinestars Tech 10 boot is one of the most high-tech boots in motocross; however, some riders feel that the extra technical aspects create a complex boot with restricted mobility. Those who like pliable boots don’t like the Tech 10’s rigid structure and longer break-in period. They typically choose the more limber Tech 7. Now, they can try the Tech 10 again because the Supervented boots break in quicker and flex more to improve connectivity at the foot pegs. Additionally, the sturdy structure of the Tech 10 chassis offers more protection for your ankles, feet and legs than most softer boots. The new outsole on the Tech 10 has been completely redesigned with proprietary grip sculpturing to improve the contact feel between your boot and the footpeg.

Alpinestars claims 34-percent-better heat dissipation on the Tech 10 Supervented boots compared to Alpinestars’ non-vented offerings. The MXA wrecking crew noticed the increased airflow when riding through the pits, riding slow on the track or when trail riding. We didn’t notice the vents while racing, but that’s to be expected. The vents certainly aren’t a gimmick. They allow air (and dust) to permeate the inner bootie and your riding socks. Luckily, Alpinestars has implemented a soft microfiber gaiter to help seal out excess water and dirt. We were impressed with the gaiter’s ability to keep rocks, dirt clods and even water out of the boot.

We expected the durability to suffer because of the Supervented boots’ perforation and increased flexibility. We did suffer wear damage to the front lip of the toe box, which peeled the vent forward and tore the perforated front leather. The $659.95 Alpinestars Tech 10 Supervented boots retail for $50 more than the standard Tech 10s and are available in two color options: all white or black/white/gray/red. The sizing ranges from adult sizes 7 to 14.

Our biggest squawk was that the most noticeable vents at the front of the toe box get clogged with dirt, which eliminates the sole venting.

MXA RATING: If you ride in warmer weather, or you are interested in trying a softer pair of Tech 10s, go with the Supervented model.

• BIKES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: 1960 BIANCHI 400 CROSS RASPATERRA

1960 Bianchi 400 Cross.

Bianchi is one of the most important Italian motorcycle manufacturers, but they are best known today for their bicycles. After the World War II, motorcycle production was resumed with the Bianchina 125, a simple and versatile, single-cylinder, two-stroke engine designed by Mario Baldi. Famous models were designed between 1948 and 1954 by Ugo De Caria; he was responsible for the famous Aquilotto and the Tonale 175 with single-shaft chain distribution, later developed in formidable competition versions by Sandro Colombo.

The Bianchi cross engine was an overhead camshafts four-stroke with a five-speed gearbox and dual ignitions. The side covers of the crankcase were made of magnesium alloy. Bianchi had raced in 1955 and 1956 with the Stelvio 175 two-stroke and  a small number of 175cc four-strokes. The results obtained by the Bianchi 175 Stelvio convinced Bianchi to race the 250 class in 1957 with a special version of the Tonale 175—later the displacement was increased to 230cc in the “three buttons” version which won the 1959 Italian 250 Motocross Championship.

In 1960 engineer Lino Tonti had arrived at Bianchi. Tonti had worked at Benelli, Aermacchi and FB Mondial before coming to Bianchi (he would later work at Gilera and Moto Guzzi). One of his first projects involved two new motocross bikes, built in displacements of 250cc and 350cc and powered by two versions of a new four-stroke engine (with two overhead camshafts located very close to each other). Lubrication was a wet sump and they were equipped with double ignitions. A five-speed gearbox and primary gear transmission were employed. The new bikes delivered their power so aggressively that they were nicknamed “Raspaterra” (Earthscraper) because under acceleration they dug furrows in the ground.

Italian motocross stars Emilio Ostorero.

The larger displacement version was soon brought to 400cc. In 1960 Bianchi again won the title in the 250 class and finished second in the 500 class. The following year the Bianchi team only used one rider, Emilio Ostorero, who raced in both displacements and was second in the 250s and third in the 500 at the end of the 1961 championship.

The 479cc, air-cooled, Bianchi Autobianchi was a licensed version of the Fiat 500.

By July of 1964 the financial situation for the motorcycle side of Bianchi looked bleak, but the bicycle division and Autobianchi car were doing okay. Autobianchi was originally equipped with an air-cooled, 479cc, Fiat engine, but in 1960 a 499cc version was offered and the power was increased to 17 horsepower. In 1964 Bianchi decided to close the motorcycle racing department and sell off all the motorcycles, mopeds and spare parts to pay off debtors. By 1967 motorcycle production at Bianchi was ceased forever.
