MXA WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE MOST IMPORTANT FINISH IN THE AMA NATIONALS

THE BATTLE FOR THE PLACE THAT REALLY MATTERS

Dylan FerrandisDylan Ferrandis is 10th in the AMA 250 National Championship points right now. Dylan missed the first three rounds recovering from Supercross injuries. In the last eight motos he has made the top five six times and won two motos. If everything went his way, he could be knocking on fifth place by the final round.

It is easy to see that the battle for the 2018 AMA 250/450 National Championship is a big deal, but we would like to postulate the battle for tenth is more meaningful. That may sound odd, but the men racing for first place are typically rich riders with factory support and careers littered with high points. If they don’t win, they still have money (and speed) in the bank for 2019.

Joey SavatgyJoey Savatgy is one point behind Ferrandis in 11th place. Over the last 14 motos, Joey has only made the top five 3 times and never had a podium moto.

Not so for a tenth place rider. He is most likely a young kid who is trying to make a mark that will put him in sharper focus for team managers, or a veteran rider who is just riding out the last few good years he’s got left. The exceptions to these two types of tenth place riders are injured riders coming back from missing a few rounds or stars who go injured a couple rounds into the series and still have enough points to stay near the top ten.

KYLE CUNNINGHAM GLEN HELEN NATIONAL
Veteran Kyle Cunningham is tenth in 450 points. Kyle is 8 points out of 9th (Cody Cooper) and 4 points ahead of 11th (Justin Hill). No matter how well these three riders do, they are over 70 points adrift of eighth place Phil Nicoletti.

One thing is absolutely true—no rider wants to finish 11th in the National Championships. 11th place riders barely make the record books and they can’t say later in life that “I was a top ten AMA professional motocross racer.” Being in the top ten is a big deal…and being tenth is the last step that still matters.

Jason AndersonJason Anderson only raced two Nationals, Hangtown and Glen Helen, before colliding with a rider on the infield of Glen Helen on a Thursday practice day. Believe it or not, Jason earned enough points in the first four motos to still be in 12th place in the 450 class.

MXA TEAM TESTED: USED IT, ABUSED IT, MISUSED IT & LOVED IT

MAXIMA SC-1 SILICONE DETAILER
When your bike is new, every part sparkles and shines. Unfortunately, that new-bike look only lasts about 13 minutes into the first ride. Somewhere between starting it up and putting it back on the stand, the luster flies off. The plastic no longer twinkles. It is dull. The solution? Spray it with Maxima SC-1 Silicone Detailer.
VERDICT: MXA’s test bikes can’t look drab and dingy. Maxima SC-1 saves us time and money. It even works on the sidewalls of our tires. SC-1 sprays out in a fine mist that covers a large area, and one aerosol can will last for 10 or more washings. Our primary weapon in the war against lackluster plastic parts is Maxima SC-1.
DIGITS: $10.50 (12-ounce can)—www.maximausa.com or you local dealer.

NEKEN SFH HANDLEBARS
The Neken SFH handlebars are standard 25.4mm oversize handlebars that taper gradually down to 22mm and then, in the last 6 inches, to 18mm. In effect, the SFH bars are 5mm smaller in the grip and throttle section than a normal handlebar. Neken uses the smaller bar to make the grips 5mm thicker. That is double the thickness of a normal grip.
VERDICT: Test riders reported a reduction in vibration, more comfort and less hand fatigue. Additionally, the strength of the handlebar was not compromised by the smaller ends, because the load on the handlebar is closer to the bar mounts—not the bar ends.
DIGITS: $108.95 (bars), $21.95 (grips)—www.nk-neken.com or your local dealer.

R-TECH VINTAGE EDITION KTM PLASTIC KIT
R-Tech plastic isn’t as well known as Cycra, Polisport, Decal Works or Acerbis, but the company has a strong presence on the Grand Prix circuit in Europe and with the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team in America. MXA got its hands on R-Tech’s blue/white Vintage Edition 2017-–18 KTM plastic. The color combination sounds strange, but it honors the blue-tanked KTMs of the 1970s. There is also a white/red version from the same era. Both have white front and rear fenders.
VERDICT: Most modern riders weren’t born when KTMs had red and blue gas tanks, let alone green (250 class) or yellow (500 class) number plates. The MXA wrecking crew got tired of explaining why these colors were historically significant, but we liked the way the bike looked.
DIGITS: $241.95—www.rtechmx.us.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: PRO CIRCUIT’S SPECIAL RUN OF 1986 HONDA CR250 TWO-STROKE PIPES

This is a cool idea. ProCircuit plans to built a special limited-edition run of 1986 Honda CR250 Works Pipe and 304 silencers for bike builder and vintage racers. Just like back in the day, Pro Circuit’s Works Pipe increases horsepower and torque, while the unplated, oiled metal finish gives your bike that “works look.” Completing the special throwback kit is a 304 Factory Sound Silencer that has a slightly longer body to add top-end performance while reducing noise output. The brushed aluminum silencer body and stainless steel inlet tube and end-cap make the 1986 CR250 silencer look as good as it performs. It brings back memories of Ricky Johnson in his Team Honda days.

Pro Circuit will begin accepting orders for the $425.00 1986 Honda CR250 kit now and fulfill them when they reach the required production number. Order now if you want to be included in this special offer. For more info go to www.procircuit.com

MXA MOTO-CHALLENGE: CAN YOU NAME THIS RIDER?

This rider was a factory Honda rider, factory Suzuki rider, factory Husqvarna rider and factory Carabela rider. What’s his name? Answer at the bottom of the page.

THE WAY WE WERE: THE WAY WE WORE

Rodney Smith was sponsored by Chesterfield.

Today, the major outside sponsors are energy drink companies like Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar, but back before the government crack down on them—cigarette companies carried the sport. Camel and Chesterfield were the most noticeable, but small brands played a role.
