• HOW TO SHOOT GREAT MOTO PHOTOS? DEBBI TAMIETTI FOLLOWS AN AUSSIE AROUND

Australian Dan Alamangos is an abundant source of strangely odd photographs and all Debbi has to do is follow him around and wait for the magic to happen.

Debbi has shot AMA Nationals, Grands Prix and the Motocross des Nations, but she loves to shoot the local racers at the weekly REM races. Here, she captures Dan Alamangos high fiving his buddy.

Debbi caught Dan checking out an amazingly deep rut at Glen Helen.

Everyone in motocross loved Chuck “Feets: Minert, but none as much as the REM racers. After Feets passed away, they showed up in matching shirts honoring the AM Hall of Famer and Catalina Grand Prix winner, who raced into his 80s. Dan Alamangos is #30.

Remembering a friend and a hero.

Dan Alamangos tries to discourage any would-be passers from making the move.

Val Tamietti checks out Dan’s butt patch.

Dan’s butt patch that needs no explanation.

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE ULTRA-GENIUSES OF YAMAHA

Can you name the three “Ultra-Geniuses of Yamaha” depicted in Yamaha’s 1995, 12-page, comic book-style, YZ ad.

ULTRA-GENIUSES ANSWER: (From left to right) Keith McCarty, Ed Scheidler and Don Dudek. At the end of the comic book was the “YZ Warrior Oath.” It read, “On my honor, I do hereby swear to be a guardian and upholder of smart engineering, the Yamaha Way, and all else that is good and right in the world! I promise to be loyal, steadfast and true, and to always be sympathetic and respectful of the sick and elderly — especially those who finish behind me.”

MXA TEAM TESTED: PRO CIRCUIT-TUNED KTM 150SX BIG-BORE KIT

Pro Circuit’s Mitch Payton has been tuning two-stroke engines since 1978, and, to this day, he works in his machine shop building factory race engines for the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team and customer spec engines for the average rider. For MXA’s Pro Circuit-built KTM 150cc engine, Mitch Payton used the KTM 150SX Factory Kit straight from the KTM Power Parts catalog as the starting point. Under one part number, the KTM Power Parts 150cc Factory Kit comes with everything needed to turn your KTM 125SX, Husqvarna TC125 or GasGas MC 125 into a 150. The kit includes the cylinder, cylinder head, piston, power valve, combustion-chamber insert, control covers, power-valve flap, and all the rings and gaskets. Although KTM sells a complete 150SX motorcycle at the dealers, that bike is no different from what you get if you install this kit on your 125; however, GasGas and Husqvarna do not sell MC 150s or TC150s.

We recommend having Pro Circuit install the modified KTM 150SX kit for you at their shop (unless you have KTM two-stroke kit experience). It’s an extra $149.95, but it’s worth it. Plus, they need to have the engine to do the hop-up work. The Power Parts 150 kit comes with five different thicknesses of base gaskets to match your cylinder head’s height with the piston, and, if you make a mistake on this measurement, you’ll be sorry. We used the stock base gasket on our build, but the clearances can vary slightly from bike to bike.

Our Pro Circuit equipped 2021 KTM 150SX made 43.70 horsepower (the stock 125SX made 37.52 horsepower and the stock 150SX made 40.70  horsepower).

In stock trim, our 2021 KTM 125SX made 37.52 horsepower. With the out-of-the-box KTM 150SX kit, it made 40.70 horses. After Mitch Payton waved his magic wand, it produced an eye-watering 43.70 horses. You read that right, almost 44 horses! As for torque, the stock 125SX peaked at 17.69 pound-feet, while the stock 150SX hit 18.83 pound-feet. The Pro Circuit-tuned 150cc reaches 19.77 pound-feet. The modded Pro Circuit 150 power curve was consistently 2 horsepower better from bottom to top. Even better, the Pro Circuit 150cc engine soared passed the OEM spec from 9300 rpm to its 11,760 rpm peak, where it was 3 horsepower stronger. The Pro Circuit mods produce big power on top and increase over-rev.

Typically, tuners will elect to go leaner to create more responsive power. With the Pro Circuit mods and increased compression, Mitch set up our engine to use MRX02 fuel. We went from a 35 pilot jet to a 37.5 to make it richer in the middle.

Josh Mosiman (right) holeshot both 125 Pro races at the 2021 World Two-Stroke Championship using the Pro Circuit-modified KTM 150SX kit engine. Pro Circuit’s R&D mechanic Schnikey (Mike Tomlin) built it for him.

You can buy the KTM Factory 150cc kit through Pro Circuit or buy it on your own and bring it to them with your bike. Also, the KTM 150SX uses the same Pro Circuit pipe and silencer as the 125. In general, the KTM 150SX is harder to ride than a 125. If you’re not an experienced two-stroker who’s already wringing out the KTM 125SX, save your money and buy a pipe and reeds for your 125 instead.

DIGITS? $349.95 (Pro Circuit mods), $831.99 (KTM 150SX Factory Kit), $149.95 (installation), $278.95 (Pro Circuit pipe), $155.95 (R-304 silencer)—www.procircuit.com or (951) 738-8050.

MXA RATING: If you like big and bold power, you’ll love the Pro Circuit-tuned 150cc. Our Pro Circuit-built KTM 150SX holeshot both motos of the 125/150 Pro class at the 2021 World Two-Stroke Championships. It’s a no-excuse engine for experienced 125 pilots.

THE YEAR OF JUBILEE MOVIE” — SEE THE COMPLETE FILM IN ITS ENTIRETY RIGHT HERE

It is not often that large scale movies, films or documentaries are made about the sport of motocross and off-road riding, but this year a consortium of motorcycle companies financed the making of an ambitious project to  chronicle the events of the 2020-2021 season in our sport—which was both a tough time because of the pandemic and a joyous time because so many people discovered off-road motorycles. For easy consumption on the internet, the “Year of the Jubilee” is broken down into three parts, each section focusing on a different aspect of the sport. Below, we present all three epiodes in one place. Enjoy

THE YEAR OF JUBILEE EPISODE 1

In the Episode 1, Roger Decoster, Ian Harrison (Red Bull KTM Team Manager), Steve Westfall (Rockstar Husqvarna Team Manager), John Hinz (CEO of KTM North America) and more talk about the struggles they went through leading their teams through the Covid-19 pandemic, and they also talk on the major boost in motorcycle sales across the country. It also exposes the passion, dedication and challenges of being an aspiring Pro racing at the top levels of amateur motocross.

THE YEAR OF JUBILEE EPISODE 2

In Episode 2, the film covers the uncertainty of the 2020 motorcycle season. For the racers, race team technicians and families at the highest level of professional Motocross and Supercross, a return to racing was not guaranteed in 2020, and it was treasured when it came. While a surge of new off-road motorcycle enthusiasts were born in the 2020 lockdown, some of the sport’s most faithful allies were laying the groundwork for the sport’s future. The film about American Motocross’ Year of Jubilee is a multi-part experience.

THE YEAR OF JUBILEE EPISODE 3

In the third and final episode, Much like the Hebrew custom “The Year of Jubilee,” 2020 was the 50th anniversary of the most influential motorcycle film of all time “On Any Sunday;” it witnessed families reunited around motorcycles; as well as miraculous overall industry growth. We find in 2021 that motorcycling gives us a way to understand our past, celebrate the present and look forward to the future. While individual successes are rewarding, it is a small gift in comparison to the freedom and joys of being a part of a united community

Now, as we get ready for the next chapter of NRX, I’m more convinced than ever that this will bring top drivers from all disciplines to challenge themselves as their teams push the envelope in vehicle development.
