MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE MUD MUCKERS ARE BACK

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: MUD MUCKER HAND GUARDS

Put them on and take them off in 10 seconds. Instant protection from mud, rain, freezing weather or rocky tracks.

You may not be old enough to remember the original Mud Muckers, but back in 1976, World Class Products came out with what was undoubtably the best hand guards ever made—especially for mud, rain or cold races. Used by Roger DeCoster, Billy Grossi, Jimmy Weinert, Tony D and Jim Pomeroy, Mud Muckers weren’t hard plastic hand guards that had be be bolted on to your handlebars, but instead were padded naugahyde-covered hand guards that protected the rider’s hands from roost, but were exceptional in a mud race because the Mud Muckers would fold over the grips, throttle and levers so that when you picked the bike up after a crash, everything was clean.

This is Mud Muckers’ original MXA ad from November of 1976. We don’t care where they’ve been for the last 42 years, we are just glad they are back.

The inside of the new Mud Mucker is foam lined.

Jammin’ Jimmy Weinert using Mud Muckers back in the day.

Flash forward 42 years! Mud Muckers are back — only in a more compact shape, with a simple closure system and a carbon fiber vinyl material that provides even better protection. Best of all, and hard to believe, is that they are being made by the same man who invented the originals back in 1976. The retail price is $30 a set from www.mudmuckers.biz.

THE COOPER WEBB SAGA CONTINUES AT KTM

Cooper Webb KTM_Photoshoot_Motorsports_CoopeKTM team Manager Ian Harrison, Cooper Webb and KTM Motosports director Roger DeCoster.

Cooper Webb has officially joined the Red Bull KTM factory team. Webb won back-to-back AMA 250 West Supercross Champions in 2015-’16 and capped that off with the 2016 AMA 250 National Motocross Championship.

It hasn’t been smooth going for the North Carolina rider since moving to the 450 class in 2017—and it wasn’t that smooth at Star Yamaha where Jeremy Martin refused to pit in the same pit as Cooper (and parked a van next to the Star rig). Since becoming a highly sought after 450 rider, Cooper Webb has only made the podium twice in the 450 Supercross series and never in the 450 AMA Nationals (although he did have 6 top five finishes).

Cooper on his way to the 2016 AMA 250 National Motocross Championship for Star Yamaha.

Cooper Webb had a rocky time with Team Yamaha after signing with them in 2017. He teamed with Chad Reed in 2017, where Yamaha, according to Chad Reed, told Cooper not to talk to Chad. In 2018 his teammate was going to be Davi Millsaps, but Millsaps got hurt in the pre-season and Justin Barcia moved into Millsaps’ spot. Barcia turned the YZ450F into a winning machine—scoring 6 Supercross podiums out of 10 races and 1 AMA 450 outdoor National win, 6 podiums, 11 top 5’s and 12 top tens. The unwritten rule on any race team is that you have to beat your teammate — even if you don’t beat anyone else. Webb couldn’t do it because of nagging injuries and unfamiliarity with the powerful 450s—not to mention his sometimes erratic riding and tendency to get into on-track altercations with other other riders (sometimes with his teammate Barcia).

Cooper Webb does have the potential to rise to the top and hopefully a change work places—from Yamaha to KTM — will do the trick. Webb couldn’t announce his KTM deal until his Yamaha contract expired on October 1, 2018. Cooper is replacing Broc Tickle, who has been caught up in the WADA drug test bureaucracy for several months. Webb will make his KTM 450SXF debut at the Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Cooper Webb said, “It was an honor when Roger and Ian reached out for me to be the next guy on the Red Bull KTM team. It’s really encouraging to know what this team has achieved – they really have been there and done it, so I don’t see any reason why they can’t do it with me. Working with Aldon at the Baker’s Factory is another strong part of the whole KTM set-up. I have an opportunity that really involves the whole package, so the plan is to ‘stick to the plan’ and focus on getting ready with the bike for Anaheim I. I don’t want anything to take me away from that!”

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: SWITCH HAULER BUMPER CARRIER

switchhauler1

MXA has considerable experience with the Switch Hauler from All-Jacked-Up Inc. It is the strongest, most durable, bumper carrier on the planet. Not only does it come with footpeg restraints, strap eyelets and the ability to carry a 300-pound load, the Switch Hauler is a modular package, that breaks down to a nice, easy to store package when you get home.  After all, who has room in their garage for a big bulky ramp or awkwardly configured contraption that doesn’t fit anywhere? With the Switch Hauler you’re not limited to the trailer speed limit, a few lanes on the road, prohibited from the carpool lane and it doesn’t need a ramp because it lowers itself down to bike height. If you don’t want to pull a trailer, mount a Switch Hauler on the back and take what you need to where you’re going.

swicthhauler2

This Switch Hauler comes in three drop hieghts: a straight tongue design with no drop, 2 inches of drop and 3-1/4-inches of drop to insure that it works with every size truck and Class III or better receiver. The modular design means that the Switch hauler is amazingly simple to install right out of the box. The retail price varies from $449.00 to $479.00. For more info go to (760) 500-3397 or www.alljackedupinc.com.

CLIPS FROM THE GREATEST MOTORCYCLE MOVIE OF ALL-TIME

MXA COVER OF THE WEEK: DO YOU REMEMBER THE 1987 YAMAHA YZM500?

Not as memorable to most Americans as when Neil Armstrong took “one giant step,” the unveiling of the first photos of the aluminum-framed 1987 Yamaha YZM500 on the July 1987 cover of MXA sent shock waves through the motocross community. With it’s square-tubed frame, monocoque airbox, barn door radiator wings and seat that extended to the gas cap, the YZM was the most radical design departure up to this time. Although Yamaha never put this bike into production, it didn’t matter. In the minds of most motocross enthusiasts, it made them believe that Yamaha was the most advanced manufacturer and returned big sales for the 1988 models—which only shared the barn door radiator wing.

MXA AD OF THE WEEK: “HUSKY ONE-TWO PUNCH”

In 1970 Bengt Aberg and Husqvarna teammate Arne Kring finished one-two in the 500 World Championships. This Husqvarna ad touts not only their GP victory and the 400s they raced, but also their appearance in the upcoming 1970 Inter-Am series (where Christer Hammargren would join them).
