MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: WHAT IS TRUE IS THAT IT IS HOT ACROSS THE NATION

• “THIS WEEK IN MXA” WITH JOSH MOSIMAN: TAKING A BREAK FROM TESTING TO PLAY ON A MINI-FLAT TRACKER

• BEN EDWARDS WINS SCOTTISH NATIONAL AT LOCHGILPHEAD

Martin Barr (3) leads the pack into the first turn. The Irishman would win the first moto, but crash out of contention in the second moto.

The old school hard-pack track at Achnashelloch Farm in Lochgilphead has seen many fast and furious race meetings in years gone by and this past weekend was no different. To win any championship, riders need to demonstrate their skills across a varied style of tracks and this would show who could ride hard pack after the deep sand of Tain at round 1. Lochgilphead is a few miles from the famous Kilmartin Track which saw the 250 Grand Prix visit in 1978. Located near the old iron age Dundadd Fort, the seat of Gaelic Kings (500-800AD), we would see who would be crowned King for a day as the riders would do battle.

The ScotMX Championship, Powered by Milwaukee attracts some of the top talent in the country. As well as all the great youths that raced on the Saturday, it was the turn of the Adults to see who would be crowned winners. With the prospect of Martin Barr (MX1) and Lewis Hall (MX2) travelling from Northern Ireland and England respectively, they would be banging bars with some of Scotland’s finest.

MX1/MX2:

The premier race of the day had the 450 and 250 Pros pit their wits and hard-pack skills against each other in the joint 250/450 race. Martin Barr was looking to build on his recent outings and get more bike time working towards full fitness.

In timed qualifying, Tony Craig pushed Barr all the way in qualifying as the Irishman grabbed to pole by 0.1 of a second. The luckless Craig however left the track at one point and smashed his bike into a boulder, which meant that he had to borrow a spare from one of his friends. With Ben Edwards posting some fast times, and the next top seven riders within a few seconds, it would result in some fearsome racing.

In the absence of Martin Barr, Ben Edwards would win the 450 class with a 3-1-1 score.

MOTO ONE:
Tony Craig blasted out of the furthest gate and narrowly grabbed the holeshot in moto 1 on a borrowed 450, but it wasn’t long before Martin Barr settled into his usual front running race winning position by lapping fast and consistently. Craig pushed hard every lap to stay in contention and he was right there until the second last lap when Ross “Bunga” Rutherford who had been tailing the leaders passed Craig and finished second. Ben Edwards worked hard to get by Kyle McNicol and Jordan McCaw before he got by Tony Craig for third in moto one. Kyle McNicol was the first 250 with Lewis Hall was only 2 seconds behind and Steven Craig would round out the top 3 in the first 250 moto race.

Ross Rutherford was second in the 450 class.

MOTO TWO:
The second moto was shortened by 5 minutes and Martin Barr wasted no time is blasting out front and gapping the field. Lewis Hall battled up from 6th to third, just as Barr went down hard at the top of the track. This ended Barr’s race and his weekend as he suffered a nasty cut on his forearm and a shoulder injury. As a result of Barr’s misfortune, Ben Edwards inherited first place after maintaining second the whole race ahead of Ross, who had the 250s of Jordan McCaw and Kyle McNicol battling behind him. Lewis Hall managed to dive in front of Ben Edwards to get the race win and 1st in the 250 class. Ben although second in the race would win the 450 moto with Ross Rutherford second and Jordan McCaw third. The next two 250 places went to Kyle McNicol and Steven Craig respectively.

Kyle McNicol’s 1-2-6 left him second in the 250 class behind Lewis Hall’s 2-1-2.

MOTO THREE:
With the chance to win the 450 overall, Ben Edwards was taking no chances in moto 3e as he blasted to the front and stayed there to win the 450 class. With no Tony Craig to push him in this race due to a DNF in the second moto and no bike for the third moto, it was down to Ryan MacLean to comeback from a big crash earlier in the day to finish second. Jordan McCaw and Kyle McNicol would continue their battle, albeit it was 450 versus 250 it was still very entertaining for the crowd . In th 450s, Ross Rutherford had done enough to secure the second overlall in the 450 class, while Irishman Jordan McCaw secured the final step on 450 podium. The 250 class overall was decided in moto three as Lewis Hall’s second place made sure he beat Kyle McNicol to the top step. Round Three of the ScotMX Scottish Championship, Powered by Milwaukee will be held at Doune, over the weekends of July 10 and July 17. For more info go to www.scotmx.com. • “ON ANY SUNDAY” RETURNS TO THEATERS IN OCTOBER FOR ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

The acclaimed 1971 Oscar nominated documentary motorcycle film “On Any Sunday” will return to theaters nationwide this fall with an enhanced picture and audio release from Bruce Brown Films to kick-off and to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the iconic motion picture. The process to repair, to re-color, and to remix the groundbreaking documentary by director Bruce Brown, maker of The Endless Summer (1964) began in early 2020. The re-mastered and enhanced film was originally only going to have a streaming and DVD/blu-ray release this year, but Bruce Brown Films felt a theatrical release is what the film’s director Bruce Brown (who passed away in 2017) would have wanted.

Part of the program for local screenings nationwide will be the availability of actual stars from “On Any Sunday” and other racing legends attending screenings for autographs, Q&A sessions, and more. Legendary riders, Mert Lawwill, Dave Aldana, Keith Mashburn, Jeff Ward, Ricky Johnson, Brad Lackey, David Bailey and many others have committed to being part of this unique program. Bruce Brown’s son and filmmaker, Dana Brown (Dust To Glory, Step into Liquid, On Any Sunday-The Next Chapter), will also be available for Q&A sessions. People can follow the project’s progress at www.OnAnySunday50th.com.

• NITRO RALLYCROSS WILL BE AT GLEN HELEN ON NOVEMBER 20-21

Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Rallycross (NRC) is set to expand in a big way, announcing a full championship series comprising five races in 2021. In 2022, NRX will go even bigger with a 10-stop global championship with races in North America, Europe and the Middle East. The new championship will also feature a revolutionary electric vehicle supercar class, which will be introduced in 2022. Travis Pastrana said, “Since day one, I have truly believed that Nitro Rallycross has the potential to be the most exciting motorsports series on the planet. When we built the first NRX course in Utah we knew we had something special — from the drivers’ genuine smiles to the astonished fans as cars flew side-by-side over 100-foot jumps. Now, as we get ready for the next chapter of NRX, I’m more convinced than ever that this will bring top drivers from all disciplines to challenge themselves as their teams push the envelope in vehicle development. It’s going to be a hell of a ride and this is only the beginning.”
