SUPERCROSS FUTURES AMATEUR CLASS TO RACE ON SATURDAY AT 2022 OAKLAND SUPERCROSS

The 2022 Oakland Supercross is the second round of the season for the 450SX and 250SX West classes, but it’s actually the first Round for the  Supercross Futures amateur series. This amateur Supercross series was implemented as a stepping stone for amateur riders to earn their 250 Supercross Pro license and this Saturday, Amateur A-class racers will be competing on the same track as the Pros.

For many years, American riders earned their Supercross license through earning points at AMA Amateur motocross events around the country and foreign riders were granted a license based on a recommendation letter from their home countries FIM representative. Then, the Arenacross series was turned into a “Road to Supercross” avenue for riders looking to gain their Supercross license. Next, after the Amsoil Arenacross Championship went away for 2019, FELD implemented Amateur Supercross races that were held on Sunday’s, the morning after the main Supercross race. Sunday’s Supercross Amateur days were held on a toned-down version of Saturday night’s track and there were classes for all age and skill levels. The Supercross Futures class raced on Sunday’s with top-level Amateur riders going all-out on the toned-down tracks to earn their license, but it proved to be dangerous and wasn’t a huge success. The Sunday Supercross Futures races went away in March of 2020 when the world as we knew it changed, but FELD says that they plan to bring the Sunday racing back for amateurs in 2023, while still keeping the Supercross Futures A-class racing on Saturday with the big dogs.

For 2022, Supercross Futures will look much different than before. Instead of Sunday racing on a more forgiving track, Amateur A-class riders now have the chance to to race on the same day and the same track as the Pros. The first Supercross Futures race is set to go this weekend in Oakland. The amateur riders will have a chance to ride the track on Friday (while the Pro riders hit the track for Press day). Then, the Futures class will get more practice and qualifying on Saturday morning, and they’ll race their Main Event on Saturday afternoon at 4:50 PM.

FELD originally thought about incorporating the Futures race into the Night Show racing, but ultimately decided to slot their race in earlier in the day, after the Pros have completed their practice and qualifying sessions. With the Futures class racing at 4:50, less than two hours before Opening Ceremonies starts in Oakland, they’ll certainly have a fair amount of people in the stadium to watch their race.
