TAKE LESS THAN 10 MINUTES TO SEE THE ANAHEIM SUPERCROSS 250 & 450 MAINS

WATCH THE ANAHEIM 1 450 MAIN

There are always surprises at every AMA Supercross. But let’s start with what was no surprise. Jett Lawrence won his first-ever AMA 450 Supercross and made a bold prediction about going after Jeremy McGrath’s long-standing 72-win record. Anything is possible, and, at least for now, Jett has one win on the books.

The surprises were that Malcolm Stewart and Ken Roczen got knocked down off the start of the 450 main and spent the rest of the race trying to crack the top ten. Roczen got 10th and Stewart 11th. Another surprise was Jason Anderson, following a lackluster 2023 season, Jason was able to maintain contact with Jett for half the race, but once Cooper Webb started pressuring Jason from behind, the gap up to Jett grew. As for Cooper Webb, he had the old fire burning inside, but unfortunately, he threw it away over a peaky hip jump and went down. He remounted and made it back to sixth place.

Poor Hunter Lawrence! He was involved in a first turn crash in his heat race and got a poor gate pick in the 450 Last Chance, where he had troubles again, but worked his way up to one spot out of transferring to the 450 main with one lap to go, but when he made his move in the last corner, ninth place Cade Clason shut the door on him—and Hunter failed to make the 450 main. The biggest surprise, or maybe not, was that Eli Tomac wasn’t a serious contender. Perhaps, Eli was just getting his feet wet after recovering from his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. We will probably see a different Eli next week in San Francisco .

The 2023 FIM 450 World Motocross Champion Jorge Prado did well for a racer who has never raced a Supercross before. He ran near the front in the 450 Main before dropping back. He was a sitting duck in the whoops and lost enough spots there to end up 13th.  Without his whoop troubles he would have been much farther up on the scoreboard. When Jorge irons out the whoops, he will be a contender.

The big players in the 250 West were R.J. Hampshire (Hus), Jordon Smith (Yam), Levi Kitchen (Kaw), Jo Shimoda (Hon) and Max Vohland (Kaw), but the biggest surprise was young Julien Beaumer, who was moved up to the KTM factory team after showing promise in the Amateur ranks. Julien didn’t win, but he made it tough for the riders who were more experienced and supposed to win.

In the end, 28-year-old R.J. Hampshire took the win in front of  Star Yamaha’s Jordon Smith (his Star Yamaha teammate Nate Thrasher crashed out and finished 21st). If you are wondering where Haiden Deegan finished, he does not race until the 250 East series starts in a couple weeks. Levi Kitchen left Star Yamaha for Pro Circuit this season and got third, Jo Shimoda left Pro Circuit Kawasaki for Honda and got fourth. Max Vohland left KTM for Pro Circuit Kawasaki and got fifth. Unnoticed in the 250 West was Mitchell Oldenburg, who got stuck in the starting gate and struggled to get his bike free. He then charged through the pack in hopes of salvaging something from the night.  Mitchell ended up a solid 8th place.

There was a hard luck story for Phil Nicoletti. His ClubMX YZ250F would not run cleanly when he got to the starting line for the 250 main.  His mechanic tried to fix it, but failed—and Phil had to watch the 250 main from the sidelines.
