MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: THE WEEKS RUN TOGETHER, BUT IT WILL HARD TO BEAT LAST SATURDAY NIGHT
• GODSPEED! JIMMY REDWINE (1939-2023)
2009 Over-70 World Vet Champion Jimmy Redwine and his son Scott at the Oklahoma Motocross Hall of Fame ceremony just three months before his passing.
In 1956, Jimmy Redwine heard there was a motorcycle race near his home in Oklahoma and he just wanted to see what it was all about. At 16 years old, Redwine said he and his younger brother decided to check out a 70-mile cross-country motorcycle race in Okeene, Oklahoma. They rode out on Jimmy’s Triumph. “I bet we could see it better if we were in it,” Jimmy said to his brother. So, Jimmy entered his first race on the same day that he saw his first race. He finished second overall. For the next 53 years Jimmy kept tight on racing. With his son Scott at his side, Jimmy race in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, Louisiana and finally, in 2009 he captured the biggest prize of his racing career when he won the Over-70 Expert World Vet Motocross Championship at Glen Helen Raceway. Other Over-70 World Champs include Catalina Grand Prix winner Feets Minert, Canadian National Champion Zoli Berenyi, Grand Prix racer Lars Larsson, Brazilian Champion Roque Colman, O’Neal Racing’s Jim O’Neal, Ike DeJager and four-time 250 National Champion Gary Jones and more.
It’s always a big deal when a motocrosser makes the front page of his hometown newspaper.
Sadly, a week later back home at Oklahoma’s Reynard Raceway Jimmy suffered a career ending injury in a crash with another rider. After surgery to repair his neck, Jimmy’s doctor told him that his racing days were over. It was a tough blow for the rugged Oklahoman to deal with, but in December of 2022 he was inducted into the Oklahoma Motocross Hall of Fame and got a front page story on his hometown newspaper. Then, three months later, Jimmy passed away at home after a long illness. He was nicest and most dedicated motocross racer you’d ever want to. Jimmy was 84 years old.

• MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK! A RAIN EVENT
In what has been the rainiest couple of months in California in the last 30 years, Glen Helen has canceled more races than it has held. They decided to hold last Sunday’s 3Bros “Six-Hours of Glen Helen” Endurance race—Rain or Shine!. They had a very large turnout and the long cross-country layout was super fun on the ridges and super muddy at the bottom of the hills. This is Scalvini importer Pete Vetrano’s Husqvarna stuck in mud bog at the bottom of a hill. Pete borrowed Ron Lawson bike and rode back to the pits (Ron walked out). Finally, a Mule dragged Pete’s Husky out of the mud bog and up the track to dry land. Glen Helen has had 30.3 inches of rain so far in the last six months. The average rainfall at Glen Helen is 15 inches over 12 months.
• HOW TO GET INTO GLEN HELEN RACEWAY WHEN THE MAIN ROAD IS FLOODED
The county is trying to rush to clear the main road into Glen Helen Raceway, after four inches of rain yesterday. With the “Saturday at the Glen” motocross, the Pasha 125 Two-Stroke Warm-Up race and Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Rallycross finale on Saturday and Sunday It is important that the crowds aren’t turned away. However, most of the Glen Helen regulars know how to come into Glen Helen the back way. Above are the street by street direction. After you cross over the bridge, drive safely because you are on Prison land and it is heavily patrolled,
