• “WHO’S WHO IN THE SUPERCROSS ZOO” CURRENT AMA SUPERCROSS POINTS HEADING TO DETROIT
Eli Tomac sent shock waves through the Tampa crowd when he pulled off the track in his heat race with his leg dangling in a visual very similar to when he tore his Achiiles tendon two years ago. He got checked out in the Alpinestars Medical unit and was cleared to race the 450 main, but he was definitely detuned and elected to cruise in to 17th place.
Hunter Lawrence crashed in his Tampa heat race when he landed on a Tuff Block and rode it into the ground. He elected not to race the 450 main with a suspected shoulder injury. It was odd not to have either of the Lawrences brother on the starting line.

• WHY KTM DESERVES YOUR GRATITUDE FOR TWO-STROKES?
KTM’s Stefan Pierer explained in an Alan Cathhart interview, why KTM kept making two-strokes when everyone else was quitting. “When I started at KTM 30 years ago— back in 1992, I had to make the decision of whether or not to produce a new 125cc two-stroke engine platform. But, at that time, we didn’t really have the liquidity to support it, so we were thinking very seriously, should we do it or not? So many comments were made that the two-stroke is dead, but finally I said, ‘That’s the only new engine platform that we can afford to do, because a two-stroke motor is much cheaper to develop than a four-stroke, so let’s do it.’ And 30 years later it’s still alive in a quantity which I should not name, but if you twist my arm we’re talking about 50,000 bikes a year! Honda tried to stop everyone from making two-strokes, but Yamaha kept making them, too.”
“I remember in back in 2000 the Japanese told me in Tokyo, “We stopped with the two-stroke, everything is heading towards four-stroke.” Okay, but because of that racing got much more expensive, with really high-end technology, because a four-stroke top end is almost rocket science with 15,000 rpm, titanium valves and all those kinds of expensive things. KTM makes two-strokes because the customer want them. We hope that with direct fuel injection we might even achieve street-legal homologation.”
