PRESS RELEASE: Matt Rebeaud Swatch Watch

Since joining the Swatch ProTeam in 2005, Mat Rebeaud has helped make the acrobatic performance art of motorcycle jumping a popular sport in his native Switzerland, where he began riding motorcycles when he was only four years old! Mat lends his name to a new Swatch Special, a classic, robust Irony THE CHRONO that is everything you want in a rough and ready sports watch. The new Mat Rebeaud Swatch Special comes with its own Special Packaging, ?Ÿ’’?›ƒ?ª?Ÿƒ????a gold and black dirt-rider helmet with a black face mask and gold visor. This new Swatch Special is a tribute to superstar Mat and all the daredevil athletes on dirt bikes who make FMX so much fun for riders and motocross fans around the world.
??ÿ
The Mat Rebeaud Special from Swatch features a black alligator leather strap with a golden brushed stainless steel buckle and two black leather loops. Inserted in the broad base strap is a second black alligator-pattern strap holding the massive golden brushed stainless steel case of this distinctly impressive Irony THE Chrono. Circumscribing the black dial is a gently beveled, sunbrushed golden flange with a minute ring featuring finely embossed indices, black hour dots and black Arabic numerals (05, 10, 15 … 60). Ringed by the flange on the black dial are a gold-on-black tachymetre scale, golden Arabic numerals at hours 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 and polished golden deltas marking hours 4, 8 and 12. A window cut in the dial reveals a structured black central zone holding the two chrono totalizers and the continuous seconds counter. All three counters feature grooved golden dials, black Arabic numerals and both black and white indices. Glossy black hour and minute hands with white superlite highlights and a golden chrono seconds hand complete this extravagantly elegant and sporty design. For more info, Click Here.

MXA MINI-VIEW: Jeff Kent
If you happened to be watching the first moto of the 40 + Novice class at Glen Helen last week you might think the guy getting the holeshot on the KTM was just another old guy with nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon. In fact, Jeff Kent is not your ordinary weekend motocross racer. When he’s not walking around the pits in his No Fear MX gear he can be found wearing the uniform of the Los Angeles Dodgers at second base.

Among all of the slouchy baseball players out there, Kent is also a standout. As a major league player with 17 seasons to his credit, Kent was the 2000 National League Most Valuable Player and in 2002 he was member of the San Francisco Giant’s World Series team. The 40-year-old is also the all-time homerun leader for second basemen.

MXA: What is your history racing motocross?

Jeff: I grew up in Huntington Beach and went to all the local races with my dad. We raced at all the tracks in Southern California; Saddleback, Carlsbad and Indian Dunes. When I was a junior in high school I had to quit racing because I needed a baseball scholarship if I was going to get into college. A couple of years ago I raced in the Cross-Over Challenge on the Supercross track at Anaheim Stadium. Right now I just try to sneak a race in whenever I can. In fact, today I’ll only be racing the first moto here at Glen Helen because we have a night game against the Florida Marlins tonight!

MXA: What is it you like about racing so much?

Jeff: The funny thing about racing is that the Pro’s make it look so easy when we all know that it is really hard. For me, part of the attraction is just that – it is really hard. Racing isn’t a team sport so you can’t rely on anyone else. It sounds selfish, but I like the individual nature of racing.

MXA: So what is it like playing in the major leagues?

Jeff: My first game was unbelievable. The funny thing is that I don’t remember my first at bat because I was on cloud nine. The stadium is bigger than life and when you walk out onto the field for the first time your heart rate goes through the roof. Being surrounded by all the fans is completely overwhelming. I bet it is not much different from racing in your first Supercross.
MXA: How involved with the sport are you now?

Jeff: You know, I have made a lot of money playing baseball and since this will probably be last season playing I am starting to get ready for my second phase in life. Right now I just want to be involved in the motorcycle industry. I own a Honda and Yamaha shop in San Antonio and of course, I want to keep racing as much as possible. I may be a major league player, but I am really a motocross racer at heart. I have also got a ranch in Texas and I’ve built two tracks there so I can ride when I’m down there.

MXA Mini-View: Jake Weimer

MXA: We are just passed the halfway point in the outdoor series, how would you rate the season so far? Did that second place at Hi-Point surprise you???ÿ

Jake: Overall I’d say it has been pretty good. I have definitely had a few bad motos and races, but I have learned a lot; things like running up front and getting tired of finishing in fifth and sixth. I have actually gotten bored with finishing in those positions! If I could make my first three of four laps better that do a lot for me with the overall. Yeah, I rode good at Hi-Point. Even though both Dungey and Austin had problems in the first moto, I still rode good and I have to say that I was not surprised.
MXA: What are your plans for 2009?

Jake:
I can’t really talk about what team I will be on just yet, but I am looking forward to working with Randy Lawrence through the winter. I definitely feel like I can win the Supercross title and I have to say that it was enjoyable to have that feeling, the feeling that you can win.

MXA: What about the outdoor series?

Jake:
I enjoy racing outdoors, but Supercross racing just seems to come easier to me and I feel like it suits my style better. Racing indoors is smoother and you don’t have to hang it out so much to stay up front.

MXA: Now that you have been training with Villopoto, what have you learned about what separates him from everyone else?

Jake:??ÿRyan is just in his own world. The other world is filled with guys like me, Dungey, Stroupe and Canard. I have been friends with RV for years and I think it is good for both of us to train together. It is good to have someone to suffer with. RV is obviously on top of his game and I know I am really lucky to be able to train with him.
MXA: What about the impact that Randy Lawrence is having in your training. Did you have a trainer before?

Jake: I did have one before and he was good, but it was pretty much focused for everything off the track. Randy has taught me a lot about strategy on the track and to have more of a plan of what I need to do on & off the track.

The Latest On Grant

The word on the street is that 2007 450 National MX Champion Grant Langston is planing to undergo yet another treatment for his eye condition in hopes of gaining back the vision that’s left him unable to defend his crown. If this latest procedure doesn’t work, GL is seriously contemplating taking disability leave which would put Yamaha in the position of hiring a replacement rider.

A Letter From Jay

“Please stop with the reports on Bicycle junk in the MXA mid week report. I want to hear about Moto, not 10 speeds. You can argue that guys use them to train on, which is fine. But riders also use weight sets and I don’t see (nor want to see) the latest in free weights, treadmills or the latest whey shakes. Keep it real guys, and keep the cycling to other mags. The one thing I have always loved about MXA is it is PURE moto.”
Funny thing Jay, when I was out at Glen Helen last week Villopoto was all over the latest issue of Road Bike Action and Randy Lawrence made sure he had three back issues for the trip to Unadilla. Guys like DeCoster and Bailey can’t stop talking about bicycles. Perhaps instead of presuming what is and isn’t “real” or “pure” about the sport of motocross you could adapt a broader view of the sport that includes information about training & being physically fit which is the basis for the sport itself. MXA has been “pure” moto for over 30 years and is as “pure” moto ?Ÿ’’?›ƒ?ª?Ÿƒ????ÿas they come, but Jay really, comparing a carbon fiber road bike with electric shifting to some free weights is like comparing a loaf of bread to a CRF 450R.
