With the Dubya-sponsored World Vet Championships only a month away, the Over-50 Expert class at REM is heating up. Ian Fitz-Gibbon (21) leads Bryan Friday (43), Phil Dowell (23) and Luther French (2). French would win with a 3-1 over Friday’s 2-2 and Dowell’s 1-3. Number 501 is Over-40 Expert Billy Mercier. He would clear out in short order. Photo: Debbi Tamietti
This is what the Over-50 Experts look like from the back. 6D helmet designer Robert Reisinger (96) and Aussie Dan Alamangos (24) try to make up for bad starts on their 250s, while Jon Ortner (10), Joe Sutter (111) and Val Tamietti (white helmet) fan out in front of them. Photo: Mark Chilson
Will Harper (7) and Brit Tony Parsons (68) are a blur as they speed down one of the straights in the Over-60 Expert class. Four-time National Champion Gary Jones used a 1-2 to win the class. Harper went 12-1 after suffering a flat tire in moto one. Photo: Dan Alamangos
Kent Reed (491) had a 10-7 day in the Over-60 Experts. Photo: Dan Alamangos
Backlighting bleeds all of the color out of this photo of Jody Weisel (24), except for the orange MXA helmet. Look closely and you can see that the roost is still hanging in the air behind his KX250F rear wheel, but the tire is not touching the ground. Photo: Debbi Tamietti
Connor Mullenix (288) two-stroked his way to victory over a large 250 Novice class. His 2-1 took the day after first moto winner Gavin Leachman had issues in the second moto that left him with a 1-10 score. Photo: Debbi Tamietti

Pete Vetrano (37) was 8th in the Over-50 Intermediates and 3rd in the Over-40 Novices. Here, he is chased by Jim Hanson (83) in the Over-50 class. Hanson went 6-7 for 7th. Photo: Debbi Tamietti
Ken Maddux (418) swept both motos of the Over-40 Novices in front of a top five of Robbie Carpenter (2-2), Pete Vetrano (3-3), Jason Goss (6-4) and Gary Taylor (5-6). Photo: Debbi Tamietti
Australian Elisha Conlon (927) won the Womens class and the 250 Beginners. Photo: Dan Alamangos
Gary Jones (61) navigates REM’s unique double-camber finish line turn. Jones raced a CRF250. The breakdown by brand for this Saturday was 35% Yamaha, 24% KTM, 17% Honda, 11% Kawasaki, 10% Suzuki and 3% TM/Husky. Photo: Dan Alamangos
REM does not race next Saturday, October 10, because of the “24 Hours of Glen Helen.” REM will return on October 17, October 24 and October 31. The October 31 race will be the Octobercross race—which is held on the World Vet track one week before the big international race. For more info go to www.remsatmx.com
