MXA TEAM TESTED: 2024 ALPINESTARS TECHSTAR GEAR

WHAT IS IT? Alpinestars’ Techstar gear is designed for racing, as well as comfort. Alpinestars has incorporated mesh materials for improved stretch and breathability, as well as a revised shape to improve mobility for 2024. It has an athletic fit, using multi-material construction with a poly-fabric-stretch main chassis that incorporates ergonomic stretch inserts for enhanced freedom of movement.

WHAT’S IT COST? $69.95 (jersey), $194.95 (pants).

WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the 2024 Alpinestars Techstar gear.

(1) Jersey. The jersey’s strategically positioned mesh inserts provide enhanced airflow and ventilation with no seams on the sides, under the arms or collar for optimized rider comfort. The jersey does come in a slim fit, but it’s not completely body conforming. There is a little bit of extra material for those with a bigger build, allowing a wider range of riders to enjoy this jersey.

(2) Pants. The Techstar pants offer a blend of performance and durability. The race-fit pants incorporate innovative features, such as an SX2 magnetic buckle closure with an updated Babel knee construction to improve airflow. The Techstar pants can be a bit tight in the waist, and the buckle strap is the only option for adjusting how tight the waist is. If you’re on the bigger side, we recommended getting one size larger and then tightening the strap to your tastes.

The material is lightweight and breathable, allowing full movement, and can accommodate knee braces or knee pads comfortably. The pants have a longer inseam, which helps them stay in your boots without riding up.

(3) Fit. Alpinestars is known for producing athletic-fit gear that can be too tight for many Vet riders. Techstar gear is their Vet-friendly line with some freedom in the jersey and pants. The single waist closure is the only drawback, so finding the correct size is more important on the Techstar pants than with the pants that come with a Velcro closure or sans-a-belt straps. We didn’t have any issues with durability in the knees; the leather has stood the test of time.

(4) Performance. The jersey’s vented areas offer a cooling effect on hotter days. The pants have vents, too, but they don’t generate the same ventilation as on Alpinestars’ Supertech gear. The non-slip material used for the rear of the pants allows you to feel more confident when riding.

(5) Options. Alpinestars offers a wide range of sizing for all of its gear sets. Techstar jerseys range from small to double extra-large. The pants run from size 28 up to size 40. Alpinestars also has a unique size guide on their website to help you fine-tune the best fit.

WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? Our one complaint is that the pants were tight in the waist without side cinches to offer extra wiggle room.

MXA RATING: Overall, the pants are durable. They fit well (when you have the correct size) and work with whatever knee protection you prefer. The jersey is lightweight and breathable with a comfortable fit.
