ASK THE MXPERTS: WHAT IS THE REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TITANIUM AND STAINLESS STEEL HEAD PIPE?
Dear MXA,
Is there any technical advantage to a titanium head pipe over a stainless steel head pipe?other than weight?
No, just the opposite. A titanium head pipe is lighter, usually between one and two ounces lighter, but in our experience titanium head pipes are prone to more rock damage than stainless steel. Why? Most stainless head pipes have a 1.0mm wall thickness, while titanium head pipes use a thinner 0.8mm wall thickness. The thinner material dents easier (especially when heated to an almost annealed state).
