Every year, one week before the World Vet Championship, Glen Helen would hold a World Vet Warm-up race. Started by REM’s Frank Thomason it was a chance for riders from other countries or other states to get a chance to ride the massive Glen Helen layout before the big race rolled around. Originally called the “Octobercross” for the obvious reason that it was held on the last Saturday before the World Vet (which has always been held on the first weekend in November). This year the World Vet Warm-up race will be held on October 26, 2024, in conjunction with the weekly “Saturday at the Glen” motocross.
This is the middle hill, up above it is the top of Mt. Saint Helen and to the right is the big downhill. At Glen Helen you are either going up, going down or thinking about going up and down.
The late Dan Villopoto (2) proves where son Ryan’s competitive streak came from. Dan went 2-3 for third in the Over-50 Intermediate class.
Chris Cole (45) amd Dave Eropkin (811).
The late Tom White won the the Over-40 World Vet Championship in 1990, but this is the Over-60 Expert class 24 years later. Tom White (80) had just inducted in the AMA Hall of Fame the weekend before this photo was shot. Tom founded the World Vet Championship back in 1985. Rich Stuelke (16) looks for some Hall of Fame tips.
Will Harper (7) and Rick Johnson (222).
Xavier Costa (45) flew in from Barcelona the day before the World Vet Warm-up race. Xavi went 5-7 in the Over-40 Intermediates for seventh overall — he stayed in the USA for the following weekend’s World Vet.
Clark Jones (41) holeshot the first Over-50 Expert/Elite moto, but crashed in turn two. Here, he tries to fight his way back to the front with Jeff Fahy (2) in tow. Clark’s 20-6 score didn’t even get him in the top ten.
Old rivals— Jody Weisel (22) and Lars Larsson (80).
Cole Zitterkopf (left), Dennis Stapleton (center) and Tanner Taylor (700) sweep through the palm tree turn.

Jimmy O’Neal (27) and Julien Cerny (69). Jim won the Over-70 World Championship in 2016.
Welcome to Glen Helen! Troy Lee Designs’ Sean Cantrell gets it all wrong.
Sean Cantrell recovered from this miscue in the 250 Intermediates to finish second overall.
Sean Cantrell just missed being hammered by his bike.
Sean takes the prone safety position, just in case his Troy Lee Lucas Oil KTM bounces back.
Jody Weisel (22) and Denmark’s Soren Schneider (279) drag race to the bottom of Mt. Saint Helen in the Over-60 Expert class. We don’t know how big the hills or bumps are at your track, but since Jody built the track he knews every inch of the 22-story Mt. Saint Helen downhill. This hump was left over from where a spectator tunnel used to go under the track. The smart line was to jump the hump. The hump removed for the 2015 World Vet Championship.
