MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT

#WHIPITWEDNESDAY

Rider: Nick Wey

Nick Wey joined the professional circuit in 1997 and has enjoyed a long careers as a racer, marked by numerous achievements. Racing professionally until 2017, he only missed events due to injury or complications, but he managed to race in at least one event every single year for 20 consecutive years. His best overall finish came in 2003 when he secured a fourth-place finish in the 250 Class (modern-day 450) for the Supercross season, achieving multiple  top-five finishes. He was only surpassed by class legends Ricky Carmichael, Chad Reed, and Ernesto Fonseca. In 2006, he achieved multiple podium positions and finished fifth overall in the series. Following his lengthy career, Nick has shifted his focus to his son Vincent’s racing. Vincent Wey is rapidly emerging as one of the top amateur racers and has a promising career ahead of him.

JETT LAWRENCE BACK ON TOP IN DETROIT

After some controversy this season, many fans had changed their opinion of Jett Lawrence, thinking that the pressure from previous success was the reason he had been on the ground or not on the top step of the podium in the last few rounds. However, in Detroit, Jett Lawrence proved them all wrong. In true James Stewart fashion, after Jett holeshot the Detroit main event, there was no stopping him. He completely dominating the field with the riding ability and mental strength that had earned Jett the 2023 450 National Motocross Championship as well as the SMX championship. Jett’s riding had been exceptional all season long, but he is human, and in this sport, mistakes happen more often than not for everyone. Silencing the critics, Jett moves on to Glendale, Arizona, where he aims to continue the momentum from his Detroit win. He will be a very tough competitor to beat this season, as he sits just one point away from the championship lead.

AUSTIN FORKNER’S LONG DRY STREAK IS OVER

After his last win in 2019, it has been five years since Austin Forkner stood on the top step of the podium. Although he ranks third in all-time wins in the 250 class, injuries have plagued the Pro Circuit rider for the past few years. Last year, in his first race back, he crashed on the start straight, sustaining a knee injury that sidelined him for the season. When he returned to motocross, this unfortunate luck continued with multiple hard crashes that aggravated his knee injury. Now, after a healthy offseason, Austin has made a strong comeback and was able to lead the main event from start to finish. With Pro Circuit now in possession of the red plate in both the East and West coast, we hope to see this streak of good luck continue for the team after so many years.

DEEGAN POWERS THROUGH

Haiden Deegan was the 250 East Supercross Championship favorite coming into the 2024 season, but unfortunately, a crash at the start of the Detroit main event put him back in he pack. He got tangled up with Pro Circuit teammates Cameron McAdoo and Seth Hammaker and runover by Triumph rider Jalek Swoll, in the carnage Haiden’s handlebars were bent like those on an American Chopper. Displaying true grit and dedication to his season, Haiden raced the entirety of the main event with his bike in this condition, something that is rarely done. In the process, he salvaged some 250 East points, but it is now 16th in the 250 East point tally,  In Supercross, anything can happen, so don’t count him out of the championship yet.

KEN ROCZEN BOUNCES BACK IN DETROIT

Ken Roczen placed third at the Detroit Supercross.

The Detroit Supercross saw the 450 points tighten up with Chase Sexton getting the Red Plate back, Jett Lawrence getting the holeshot and runaway win and Ken Roczen finally back on the podium. By night’s end, which was actually still in the daytime, Sexton, Lawrence and Plessinger were at the top of the 450 leaderboard separated by only 3 points, while several riders had bad nights; (1) Eli Tomac ended the night in tenth place (16 points behind Sexton); (2) Malcolm Stewart got 11th and had time to throw  in a quick crash (and is not in the top ten in 450 points); (3) Justin Barcia was 12th in Detroit, a far cry from the 3rd he got in San Diego four weeks ago. BamBam is now 39 points out of first place. (4) Christian Craig has had a terrible start to the 2024 season. He is 17th in 450 points and finished 13th in Detroit—his best finish so far in the first five events. (5) Hunter Lawrence has been slowly recovering from the disaster at Anaheim 1, where he failed to qualify out of the 450 Last Chance. Since then he has finished 10th, 7th, 11th and 8th. He has finally made it into the top ten in points (7 points behind Justin Barcia in 9th).

As for the opening round of the 250 East, it’s hard to say what the results mean in the long run. It was obvious that Austin Forker and Max Anstie were on their A-Games, but a massive first turn pile-up left most of their highly touted East Coast competition on the ground, back in the Mechanic’s Area getting their mangled bikes straighten out or out of the race. For example,  Cameron McAdoo, who was the fastest qualifier was 15th, Haiden Deegan was 16th, Tom Vialle was 18th, Seth Hammaker was 21st and Evan Ferry brought his Triumph home 22nd. However, bad luck for some meant good luck for others. Daxton Bennick was 3rd, Coty Schok was 4th, Pierce Brown was 5th and Jalek Swoll put his Triumph across the finish line in 6th.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: HAIDEN DEEGAN DOESN’T GIVE UP

“With what I’ve dealt with these past few weeks, the day was actually pretty good. I was first in free practice, then the first qualifying was alright, and the second qualifying, I was on the board, so I was happy with that. In the heat race, we had plenty of speed. Cameron McAdoo and I were the fastest out of everyone, so I wasn’t worried about that. Then after the start of the main event, someone on the inside just sent it into everyone, and we all went cartwheeling. It happens. We got some points, and we didn’t quit. Now we’ve just got to go and tick off some wins and gain these points back.”
