• STEVE MCQUEEN’S 1968 HUSQVARNA 360 VIKING GOES ON THE BLOCK IN MONTEREY ON AUG. 12-14

In the winter of 1969 Steve McQueen went the Inter-Am where he saw motocross rider Bengt Aberg compete on his new two-stroke Husqvarna Viking 360 at a series of four races in California. So impressed with what he saw, immediately after watching the third race in Santa Cruz, McQueen made an offer for the Swedish rider’s bike, and Aberg finished the rest of the season on another machine. Aberg went on to win the World Championship on a Husqvarna in 1969 and 1970. The California ownership transfer form, dated February 18, 1969, indicates it was purchased by McQueen’s production company, Solar Productions. McQueen collected over 200 motorcycles during his life. so it isn’t uncommon to see Steve McQueen bikes up for auction. In fact, the 400 Cross that he rode “On Any Sunday” crossed the block for a resounding $230,500 at Bonhams in 2018.

• ADAM CIANCIARULO OUT FOR 2021 WASHOUGAL NATIONAL & REST OF SEASON

Adam Cianciarulo will miss the remaining 450 Nationals and any chance of being selected for the Motocross des Nations team because of surgery to his hand.

Adam Cianciarulo has announced that he will miss the Washougal National and the rest of the 2021 season. Adam has been struggling with an arm issue at his ulna nerve, causing him to lose strength on the track. Adam has struggled with crashes and this past weekend’s wreck at Spring Creek ended his day of racing and helped his decision to undergo surgery sooner rather than later. Adam joins Zach Osborne, Jason Anderson and Phil Nicoletti on the 450 class injured list.

Adam Cianciarulo said: “I’ve been dealing with an ulnar nerve issue for the past couple of years. Randomly, I started having problems with it at the end of 2019. In 2020 it was mostly manageable and I really thought it was just arm pump. However, it continued to get worse this past off-season to the point where I couldn’t do more than a few laps at a time. After a lot of tests and scans, I had nerve decompression procedure right before SX ‘21. I’ve experienced minor relief from that, but not enough to be myself out there. I lose what feels like most of the strength in my right hand gradually as I’m riding. I’ve tried to be smart and do my best—but at this point the only logical decision is to get it fixed.”

• JEFFREY HERLINGS DROPS TO SIXTH IN 450 GRAND PRIX POINTS AFTER SITTING OUT THE LAST THREE MXGP MOTOS—AND HE MAY MISS MORE RACES

Jeffrey Herlings had hoped to close up the gap on points leader Tim Gajser, but in a recurring story he is now injured and has already dropped to sixth in 450 points.

KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings  was landed on over a jump by Ivo Monticelli at the Oss, Holland, round of the MXGP Championship. Monticello wasn’t to blame as Herlings holeshot device failed releasei. Monticelli’s front wheel hit Herlings on the top of his helmet and richocheted into his upper-left back. The result was a cracked shoulder blade for Jeffrey. To his credit, Herlings never fell and kept going,  running on adrenaline he went on to win the first moto in Oss—broken shoulder blade an all. But, once back in the pits he realized that he could not race the second moto and has now he missed this weekend’s Czech Republic Grand Prix at Loket

Herlings said, “I don’t have pain in my shoulder for day-to-day life, but sports and especially something like motocross is a different story. We’ll sit out Locket with the aim to come back 100%. It’s a shame and something that wasn’t my fault, but it is what it is. I’ve got no words for this. I played it so smart this year, I took zero risks and did everything according to plan this season. I was almost in the championship lead and then this.”

Current 250 World Champion Tom Vialle won the opening 250 World Championship round in Russia, but missed England, Italy and Holland. He came back for Loket and finish second in the first moto, but crashed several times in moto two and dropped out. Tom is current 13th in 250 GP points.

Kailub Russell.

Eight-time GNCC National Champion Kailub Russell called an end to his off-road GNCC career earlier, but wanted to fulfill a bucket list dream of racing the AMA National Motocross Championship for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team. Unfortunately, he suffered a broken jaw in a pre-season practice crash that delayed his 250 National debut until Round 3. His best overall finish after that was a 15th at the Mount Morris National and finally hisdream came to an end.

Kailub said on announcing his retirement from professional racing, “I’m not defeated, but I thought I could come back and be that same racer I was a few years ago, but I’m just riding timid and scared. I’m just struggling every weekend and that’s not what the fans deserve to see of me or what the team deserves to get out of me. It’s a tough go, but the professional career has come to a close.”

Back in 1972 Joel Robert’s 250 World Championship RH-71 had a guesstimated value of $15,000, but Suzuki would sell you the 1972 TM250, which “was designed after the RH-71: so you know the TM250 delivers.” Plus it only cost $899.

This is the 2021 Triumph Scrambler 1200 “Steve McQueen Edition” — can they go from this to an actual motocross bike?

Amid al the news of Ricky Carmichael joining iconic British marque Triumph to do R&D on a proposed Triumph motocross bike, we don’t expect many current riders to remember much about Triumph’s  previous dirt bikes. Triumph motorcycles will be 120 years old in 2022, but was only brought back from the dead 30 years ago . There have been no Triumph dirt bikes since the 1960s. Here are some classic Triumph machines.

The 1963 Triumph TS20 Tiger Cub Scrambler was one of the most successful off-road race bikes of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Tom White’s 1972 Redline 650 Triumph dirt tracker was Tom’s prized possession. It had a 650cc Triumph engine in a Redline dirt track frame and was used specifically for TT races.

This 1965 Triumph TT Bonneville Special was the production version of Triumph’s off-road, desert, dirt track and TT machinery.

• MXA TEAM TESTED: LUXON MX ANTI-TWIST KX250/450 BAR MOUNTS

WHAT IS IT? Most stock, rubber-mounted handlebars twist in a minor tip-over. To straighten them out, you have to unbolt everything, slap the bars back and forth until they align into the correct position, and re-tighten them. The Luxon MX Anti-Twist bar mounts for the KX250 and KX450 use the latest engineering technology to resist twisting. Kawasaki has the weakest  bar mounts.

There are two factors that contribute to them twisting so often: separate bar mounts and wimpy rubber cones. (1) Separate bar mounts. To strengthen the KX mounts and reduce handlebar-twisting, Luxon MX utilizes a solid, one-piece, lower bar mount; however, previous one-piece lower bar mounts have been known to not only twist but bend. Luxon’s solution was to increase strength in the one-piece lower bar mount. (2) Rubber cones. Kawasaki’s bar mounts are damped by marshmallow-like rubber OEM cones. When you crash, the mushy rubber cones deform and twist the bar mounts. It looks like you bent your bars, but in reality, you squashed the rubber cones. Some riders fix the twisting issue by swapping the stock KX rubber cones for solid aluminum ones. These reduce twisting greatly, but sacrifice the reduction in vibration that the rubber cones provide. Luxon MX originally created ultra-strong mounts that never failed, but they found that these only created more expensive problems for the consumer when other parts broke instead of the bar mounts twisting. In the end, Luxon MX decided to use the stock Kawasaki rubber cones in bar mounts that will bend in a foreseeable crash, but can take a much larger blow before they twist.

On Kawasaki motocross models, the bars can be moved forward or backward in the clamps. The Luxon mounts feature the same reversibility as the stock mounts to allow the two bar mount holes to become four handlebar positions by rotating the eccentric bar mounts fore or aft. Additionally, Luxon’s mounts come with drilled titanium spacers to give riders the option to raise their handlebars by 5mm or 10mm. If you like the stock handlebar height, place the Ti spacers under the top triple clamp to take up the extra space on the mounting posts.  Luxon MX offers a crash-replacement program that gives riders who have damaged their Luxon MX components a discount on their replacement parts. In return for the discount, Luxon requires a detailed description of the crash so the engineers can learn more about why and how the product failed. You can get an even bigger discount by providing video footage of the crash for their engineers to analyze.

The Luxon MX bar mounts are available for Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and Suzuki motorcycles, but we xpected the Luxon MX bar mounts to come with higher-durometer rubber cones instead of using the stock worn-out ones.

MXA RATING: If you like straight handlebars and don’t want  to spend precious time working on your front  end in the pits, you’ll appreciate the Luxon MX bar mounts. They don’t eliminate handlebar  twist, but they increase the handlebars’ resistence to twisting.

Tony Craig had the benefit of racing Doune the week before the ScotMX Pro Nationals to make sure he was prepared for the 450 National class sponsored by Carnegie Fuels. He had to be, as the Doune field was packed with experienced veterans and fast young riders. Qualifying showed his efforts last week had paid dividends as Martin Barr, coming back from injury, would push him all the way. George Simmutch, who had also raced last week and even beat Craig in one moto, was third fastest, just under a second behind Barr. Four seconds would split the rest of the 450 top 10 as the 250 riders did their best to beat the bigger capacity bikes. Kyle McNicol had bragging rights over Ben Kennedy and Steven Craig in 250 timed qualifying.

MOTO 1: Ross Rutherford would push hard in moto one, but Tony Craig would lead the entire race and win by 3 seconds. Martin Barr gained two places to round out the top 3 in the 450 class. Kyle McNicol was too busy racing against the 450 riders to notice his fellow 250 peers. He finished 6th in the first combined 250/450 moto and was way ahead of Steven Craig, who got the second in the 250 moto. Logan Hendry bagged the final spot on the 250 podium in moto one.

Martin Barr made the podium in all three motos, but had to settle for second in the 450 class.

MOTO 2: It was business as usual for Tony Craig in moto 2 as he was beginning to make it look easy. Martin Barr improved on his third in moto 1 to finish second. It was George Simmutch, who would impress in the second moto, as he enjoyed some close racing with Ben Edwards and Gary Gibson on his way to third. Ross Rutherford and Ryan McLean were having a ding-dong battle on lap 1until Rutherford lost his front wheel in a corner clash with McLean. Rutherford dropped to 15th, but got back up to 7th. It was another hard fought race for Kyle McNicol in the 250 class as he mixed it up with the bigger bikes. Ben Kennedy got the better of Steven Craig as he made up for a 12th in the first moto.

MOTO 3: The final moto of the day saw another win for Tony Craig and a close second place for Martin Barr. Barr had to get by Rutherford and Gary Gibson, but did so mid-race and then tried hard to catch Craig, but was 6 seconds off at the flag. Gary Gibson had his best finish of the day with the final moto podium. Ben Edwards ran just behind the top three all day, but it was enough for an overall third place behind Craig and Barr. Edwards retained the overall red plate as the Scottish Championship leader.

In the 250 class it was a three-moto sweep for Kyle McNicol as the GRT Holeshot KTM rider showed he’s still the one to beat in the 250s. Steven Craig’s second place was well clear of Logan Hendry, but Logan managed to hold off Ben Kennedy for the final step on the podium. It was a bumper day for ScotMX which saw more than 300 entries for round 3. Round 4 of the ScotMX Scottish Championship, Powered by Milwaukee, will continue on August 15 at Rhynie MX Track, north of Aberdeen.

Ross Rutherford’s 2-7-6 was good enough for fifth overall.

In Episode 2, the film covers the uncertainty of the 2020 motorcycle season. For the racers, race team technicians and families at the highest level of professional Motocross and Supercross, a return to racing was not guaranteed in 2020, and it was treasured when it came. While a surge of new off-road motorcycle enthusiasts were born in the 2020 lockdown, some of the sport’s most faithful allies were laying the groundwork for the sport’s future. The film about American Motocross’ Year of Jubilee is a multi-part experience.

In the third and final episode, Much like the Hebrew custom “The Year of Jubilee,” 2020 was the 50th anniversary of the most influential motorcycle film of all time “On Any Sunday;” it witnessed families reunited around motorcycles; as well as miraculous overall industry growth. We find in 2021 that motorcycling gives us a way to understand our past, celebrate the present and look forward to the future. While individual successes are rewarding, it is a small gift in comparison to the freedom and joys of being a part of a united community.
