THE FAMOUS CARLSBAD MOTOCROSS TRACK IS STILL OPEN
Carlsbad Raceway in Southern California has been on the chopping block so many times that most people have stopped counting. Rumored to be closing as long ago as the 1993, the track keeps coming back. One of the original tracks from the inaugural 1972 AMA National Motocross Championship, Carlsbad was also the host of the USGP for 19 years (from 1973 to 1992).
It was kept alive for many years by REM promoter Frank Thomason and when he moved his REM races to Glen Helen, ASV owner Bob Morales picked up the gauntlet of race promotion for a couple years before it was take over by Coast Racing. Unfortunately, Coast Racing has not be able to host very many races at the famous motocross track, but through sheer will they have managed to keep the track open for occasional practices.
IT WILL BE OPEN THIS MONTH
On January 7th Coast Racing announced that motocross practice will resume at Carlsbad Raceway on Saturday, January 10, on the lower USGP track. Gates open at 10 a.m., with riding from 11 a.m. to 4.p.m. No minors–18 and up only! Additional practices are scheduled for Wednesday, January 21 (on the upper track) and Saturday, January 31. Coast hopes to hold once a month wednesday practices–if enough riders show up. Coast Racing’s lease is lease is month to month, so enjoy it while it lasts.
The gate fee will be $15.00 and the Coast Racing track fee is $25.00. For last-minute weather updates before practice dates, call the morning of practice at (760) 722-6639.
